I have an old Airport Express that won't connect/set up with Yosemite. Any help appreciated

Hi, as the title suggests I have an old Airport Express that I have always used wirelessly to connect to my hifi but now that I have upgraded to Yosemite it won't connect via Airport Utility  6.3.4 and Yosemite won't let me use Airport Utility 5.6  Seems I'm stuck between a rock and hard place! Ethernet is no use as the hifi is in another room. Yosemite is running on an iMac and is connected wirelessly to Virgin Broadband. Thanks, Alex.

If the AirPort Express is very old, such as the original 802.11b/g - only models A1084 or A1088 you will need a commensurately older version of both AirPort Utility and OS X to configure it. Those models were discontinued about seven years ago and support for them is gone. Ethernet won't make a difference anyway.
You may find instructions or links to web sites with instructions to modify OS X in an effort to circumvent that restriction. I cannot emphasize enough just how bad an idea that would be.

Use a windows computer.. or ask a friend to bring a windows laptop and use the 5.6 version windows utility.

The odds are that you downloaded AirPort Utility 5.6.1.....which will only work with Leopard and Snow Leopard Macs.
Since your post indicates that you are using Lion 10.7.4, you need the correct utility for Lion. The link is below:

  • We have an old titanium PowerBook that will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.

We have an old titanium PowerBook that will easily connect to any WiFi cafe or hotel network, but will not connect to our AirPort Extreme network. What gives.
When the Apple Tec. installed our network for our 3 iMAXs, he couldn't it to connect either. Of course our two iPads have no trouble connecting.
We are also having trouble getting it to upgrade from OS 10.5.8 to 10.6, even though I have a Snow Leopard up date family pack.

What is your Wireless Security setting on the network?  Since you are running Leopard, I may not have the desired answer, but some of the Airport-equipped laptops, like the TiBooks, are said not to support all of the settings.  I have an AE network which supports b and g, with "WPA2 Personal" settings and the TiBooks connect with that one OK with 811.b Airport.
Oh, and no way to upgrade beyond 10.5.8 Leopard for PPC machines like the Titanium G4 Powerbooks, as 10.6 and above require Intel processors.
EDIT: I didn't notice this, but the TiBooks may be connecting with WPA encryption on my network, as I have the following display on my settings:

    a brody,
After further scrutiny your solution solved the mouse problem of going left to right.  But now the home screen problem.  Display two on the right still has the dock below and the menu bars.  Any ideas how to fix this?

  • Have an old AirPort Express

i have an old AirPoet Express model A1264. never used. want to use it now but software not supported w/10.7.5. can i get updated install software on line?

Assuming that it is functioning correctly,  A1264 model of the AirPort Express will definitely work with 10.7.5, 10.8.5 and 10.9.x.
I'm using my son's 10.7.5 Mac at this time, and it works perfectly with an A1264 Express that I have here.
IF....you have an A1084 or A1088 version of the Express, then 10.7.5, 10.8.5 or 10.9 will not work with that device.
Power up the A1264 Expess for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the device for 10 seconds and release.
Then, click the AirPort icon at the top of the screen and wait a few seconds for New AirPort Base Station to appear. Just below that, click on AirPort Express to set up the device.
    Report on your results.

  • I have an old Airport Express. How do I get Airport Utility to recognise it?

I have an OLd style Airport Express that I was using with my 2007 iMac and Tiger. Recent upgrade to Mountain Lion.
How do I get the Airport Utility to recognise it so I can set extra stuff?

Here are the AirPort Utility downloads:
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#airport
Bottom line: I don't believe it's possible to use your old AirPort Express with Mountain Lion.  The current AirPort Utility is 6.3.1.
I'm assuming you have this one (from around 2004):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP76
If instead you have this one (from arount 2008):
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP1
... then AirPort Utility may well support your device.

  • I have an old airport express, but the software on my computer does not accept it. I need to downgrade the software, but the older software will not install.

I have a old G4, I want to give to my son. It does not have a wireless card and because his room is on the second floor it is impossible to connect with a wire.
I wish to add an airport express to my airport extreme network and connect the computer and the airport express together with a cable. Is this possible?
    second question:
    software does not install.
I do have a network with a airport extreme and want to add the old airport express to it. I want to do this with airport software, however the software tells me the airport express is to old and i need to reinstall older software 5.6 to be precise. However installing fails, so I thought i just remove the airport software, but osx does not allow me to do that.

i managed to install the older airport utility and am trying to set up a connection with an existing network, but airport utility cannot find the airport extreme AFTER it starts up again. I then went and again restored it to its factory settings and did the whole procedure again with airport utility, but again after utility tells the airport express to restart it does not come back.

  • Airport Express that will not connect to broadband

We recently moved to China. I have tried everything I know and received some help from Apple telephone service and a local source but the Express will not work correctly with the incoming signal. I can hook my Powerbook G4 up to the incoming signal via ppoe with a password and I got the Express to work through a PC in the room acting as a server and using a hub, sort of. With the server I could get on Yahoo but nothing else will/would load. I tried the DNS server number but this did not help with the Express loading pages while using the PC server and hub. I had tried hard reset onthe Express a few times to no avail, though this was needed for it to work at all. I get a good signal from the Express and I get the green lock light but I do not get a true connection to the web.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as we have two macs and really need the wireless feed for the work we are doing at Jishou University.

I'll answer your question here - but if you want to continue this discussion please start a brand new discussion topic of your own. Your problem has very little in common with that of John Amato - just because the symptoms are "it doesn't work!" doesn't mean the problem is the same.
Yes, a Linksys wireless router will work perfectly with Macs equipped with an Airport card.
Since you installed an Airport card into your eMac - does your eMac now have an Airport menu item (the fan shaped icon near the right side of the MacOS menu bar)? If so, click on the Airport menu - and a list of in-range wireless networks will appear. Click on the name of your Linksys router's wireless network to connect to it. If your Linksys router is protected with a wireless security protocol and password, your Mac will now prompt you to enter the password - and to help you any further beyond this point I will need to have you tell us what protocol (WEP or WPA) you are using.
    If your eMac:
    - doesn't have an Airport card menu, then tell us exactly what model of eMac you are using
    - doesn't show your Linksys router's name when you click on the Airport menu, recheck the Airport card installation inside your eMac and make sure you plugged the antenna cable connector into its socket on the Airport card AND you fully inserted that connector (which takes a fair bit of force).

You won't be able to restore a device running iOS 4.2 from a backup of a device running iOS 5 (as you found out).  And the Iphone 3G can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1 so there is no way to migrate from his iPhone 4 back to his iPhone 3G.  He would have to at least have an iPhone 3GS, which will update to iOS 5.1 and would be able to restore from the iPhone 4 backup.  Unfortunately, there isn't any way around it.

  • I have Elements 9 and cannot download NEF files from my new Nikon1 v1, any help appreciated

I have Elements 0 and cannot download NEF files from my new Nikon1 V1, any help is appreciated.

PSE 9 is too old for any of the versions of ACR that support the 1 V1. You have three options:
    1. Upgrade to PSE 10 or 11.
    2. Use the Nikon software to convert the raw files and send the resulting tiffs to PSE for further editing.
    3. Try the free Adobe DNG converter, and you should be able to open the resulting DNGs in your version of ACR.

  • I have an old Airport Express I want to use to extend WiFI (which is best Airport Express or Extreme) and to have a HD for storing Itunes connected to the old Airport as well.         I would also like to have the new Airport hardwired to my Mac (desktop)

I am willing to buy a new Airport Express or Extreme so I can get at least one LAN port - but only if I can use that LAN port to connect to my MAC (desktop) so it doenst have to get internet via the WiFi- AND so I can set it up as its own hot spot.  I think I saw that was possible??  That way my guest network would be separate from my home Network.  Just trying to get the best layout. I have cable modem to old Airport now and USB from it to printer.
Maybe a new Airport - again USB to printer and LAN to MAC(?) then old Airport elsewhere in the house to extend the signal and use USB off it to hard drive to store Itunes?  Would LOVE to have it there to use for Airplay etc- Is that possible- I have read many comments and still not sure if it is possible or not.
Baxically I need a simple solution to storing all my photos- music and movies (MAC only has 500GB) AND have a great back up; Currently have a 1TB drive as Time Machine - so could use that for back up- but running out of space on MAC for all the media I am saving.  THANKS!!

You are asking several different questions. If you need to store your photos, music, and movies on an external volume, you certainly can. Any externally connected hard disk drive will work, connected either directly to your Mac or to your Time Capsule as a shared volume.
You should not rely upon using that as a backup device though. Although you certainly may use it for both purposes, it is a better idea to have dedicated backup devices for a variety of reasons not limited to redundancy. You would not want to simultaneously lose all your pictures as well as your backup. If they are all on the same device, that could happen. Furthermore, a backup cannot back up the volume on which it is running.
As for adding an Extreme or Express, using its LAN port for your iMac, and then enable Internet sharing so you can effectively use the iMac as a "hotspot", you can do that too, but I am unclear on what benefit you believe this arrangement would convey for you.
An Extreme's Guest network is separate from its Main network; that is the reason for having it.

  • Does the airport express need to be connected to router with ethernet cable to work?

We are trying to set up 2 zones for streaming music. The guys at Apple sold me an airport express. However I cannot get it to connect to the internet unless it's wired directly to my wifi router. This does not work for me as the components I need to plug into it are located in another room of the house. Am I doing something wrong or am I trying to get the AX do something it can't?

The Express cannot wireless extend non apple router.. however it can join a wireless network that is non-apple and it can work as a wireless to ethernet bridge. It should be able to connect the audio output to amp or speakers. But you need to do the setup, choosing join a wireless network which is under the options and not displayed as a standard connection type in the utility.
Here is one example of doing it.

  • Another airport express that won't configure

Further to the other recent posts on this topic I seem to have a similar baffling problem. My set up is this:
I simply want my AE to stream music to a stereo. I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router which already gives me a fully functioning wireless home network.
The AE has been configured in the past and has worked absolutely fine. For some reason the configuration/connection was lost recently so I've had to go through the config process again. Lucky me, since I can't now get it to work!
Having followed Ewen's helpful guide entitled 'Express and D-Link routers' posted on Nov 14, 2004 and looked through various other recent posts on this subject I'm at a loss to know why.
The first config steps I take are to reset the AE and establish a hard-wire connection to the router. In attempting to 'configure' the base station using the Airport Admin Utility I've custom changed the single IP address to be distributed by the base station to 192.168.30.xxx under the 'Network' tab (since my router has an IP address of 192.168.30.1). Then under the Airport tab i have set 'use base station to' 'join an existing wireless network' under the Airport tab and added the SSID of my network. I think that should be enough to do the job but the problems come when hitting 'Update' ... at first it looks as though the AE/base station is being configured but before it completes the base station name and IP address simply disappear from view in the Admin Utility window and nothing more happens. While of course the AE itself carries on flashing yellow at me.
The only way to get anything back to attempt configuring again is to reset the AE and start all over. Am I missing something obvious? All thoughts, tips and suggestions gratefully received.

I suggest you follow the advice posted by David Lovell in this discussion:
David Lovell, "Airtunes for XP with a Wired/Wireless network" #1, 09:05pm Jan 8, 2005 CDT
The advice you have been following as part of the configuration - to custom change the single IP address to be distributed by the base station to 192.168.30.xxx under the 'Network' tab - doesn't accomplish anything useful so I suggest you not bother doing it.

  • I have a 2nd internet location that won't connect through my airport. help!

I live in one place in the week and another at the weekend. when i set up my airport i did so at the weekend address. now i want to connect to the internet through airport at my weekday address and i have no connection. What can i do to solve this problem?

Create a 'location' for home and a 'location' for home. Then switch to the appropriate one. See KB 106653, Using network locations in Mac OS X.
