I have an old Black MacBook (2008)...does anyone know what kind of FireWire it has?  Is it a 4-pin or 6-pin?

And there is cable from 6-pin to 9-pin (FW400 to FW800) available from
the apple store or anywhere quality computer products are sold...
saw a belkin brand on 2M cable. Also adapters appear, in a search.
And Thunderbolt to FireWire, for those instances where a newer Mac may not
have FireWire or need to use a peripheral via that port.
What are you connecting?
