I have an old imac ruby..What can I do with it?

I have an old imac ruby.. it's been sitting in my attic for years.. Would I be able to bust that out and get it working for my son? He's 5 and would mostly be using it for internet, and learning games, even videos if possible.. Or is that totally impossible? Is it possible to get it set up to work with fios internet?  I'm thinking a resounding no, but not sure what to do with such a pretty retro piece of technology.. Any suggestions?  If there is no use for it, are there any good ways to get rid of it?
The following are the specs written on the outside of the computer:
Model #- M 5521 DHHS Code: SA ruby 450MHZ 20GB HD/DVD/192 MB SDRAM MDM US EN KYBD/MAC OS
It also has an "ethernet" ID...

I think you are a little pessemistic about this machine.
The best approach would be playing lots of games and running educational software.
With more workd and dollars...
You can get on the Internet with this machine will be slow with modern site, but will work find.  Will not do video on the web.
You could max out the memory to 1gig. Could install 10.4 and use TenFourFox as your web browser.
Be sure to update the firmware before installing Mac OS X.
You could buy an external DVD drive. It needs to be firewire and bootable by Mac OS. If you have another PPC with firewire, you could try target Disk mode and installed tiger that way.
You need to figure out the level of your  firmware before installing 10.2 or greater. ( The PC name for firmware is BIOS. ) Installing 10.2 with a down level firmware will most likely make your iMac unusable and difficult to fix.
What is Open Firmware?
The firmware on a PPC is called Open Firmware. Open Firmware software receives control when you poweron your machine.  It does some hardware testing and some hardware configuration then passes control to your version of Mac OS.   It reside on a PROM ( program read only memory ) chip on the logic board.
Figuring out what level of Open Firmware you have?
1) Mac OS 9.x or 8.x, you need to use the Apple System Profiler.

If the phone is Activation Locked the phone is useless to you. There is no way around Apple's antitheft feature. To check this go to Settings/iCloud and turn off Find my iPhone. If it asks for a passcode for an Apple ID that is not yours it is still Activation Locked, and there is a high probability it is stolen.

  • After having to reset FF I have a old FF folder what do I do with it?

My FF icon started showing a blank page when I clicked on it. I could of course click my homepage after the fact but not what I want. So I re-set FF afterwords there was a "old FF data" folder on my desktop. What is this for? what do I do with it? can I use it to set my homepage exactly as it was before the re-set? how?
    Thank You,
    Ron

Recovering data from the Old Firefox Data folder is a little tricky because often the file and folder names are obscure.
Regarding your home page, were you using a custom page online (like the old iGoogle) that you can easily reconnect to, or were you using an add-on that stored the page setup locally? If it was only stored locally, there are a couple different scenarios for recovering your data, but the details depend on which add-on it was.

  • I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I haven't used it in years, but I would like to start. What are my options for getting it up to date? Is it even worth the trouble/cost? I was hoping to at least get it running Snow leopard, if not Lion. Options?

I have an old Imac G4 from 2003. I would like to start using it again, however it is so out of date and runs too slowly. What are my options to update it? I really don't want to invest a ton of money - I might as well get a new one, so if there are any reasonable ways to get it to run Snow Leopard or even Lion, please help. I've also considered using a mac mini? Is that worth it either? I'm not sure which way to go here. I don't want to trash it, I feel like it can be a great computer if updated.

Presumably it is running tiger 10.4.11?
It may be able to run Leopard 10.5:
    Leopard system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP517
But that is as far as the old PPC Macs can go, and Leopard can cost up to $200 on Amazon.

  • I have an old iMac that won't boot up anymore.  I have the OS X install disks but I can't get it to boot from these disks.  No need to save anything.  Any suggestions?

I have an old iMac.  Not sure of the operating system but the install disks say OS X.  The computer will not boot anymore and all I keep getting is to restart and when I do I keep getting the same message.  I do have the install disks but I can't get the computer to install, or for that matter, read the disks.  I would like to rebuild the computer from these disks so that I can continue to use this computer.  There is no need to save anything on the computer as I backed it up months ago.  Any suggestions as to how I can save this computer and not have to recycle it?

Really need to know what version of OS X it is currently running, and what version you are trying to install.

Install more RAM in the computer; the Mac needs to have at least 2GB of RAM and should have 4GB or more first.

By default iWeb keeps its data in (user)/Library/Application Support/iWeb in a file named Domain. Without this file you cannot proceed (other than by recreating the site from scratch using the published version as a reference) so you need to locate it on the original disk.
To confuse matters, Apple have hidden the user’s Library folder in Lion and Mountain Lion to casual viewers, in an attempt to stop new Mac users messing their machines up. To access it, in the Finder go to the ‘Go’ menu and hold down the Option (Alt) key; the Library folder will appear as a choice.

I have my iMac G3 set up with three partitions like you are proposing.
I'd recommend getting virtual box on your new Mac.  You can install the latest Linux version easier this way.
The problem is finding a PPC distro you like.  I forget how I configured the Linux boot manager, yaboot.  I may have skipped it or had it installed in the linux partition.
    Ubuntu
The Ubuntu folks stopped supporting the power PC a while back.  You will have to install an older version of Ubuntu.
You may to modify xorg.conf. See:

I was able to get the last official versions of Ubuntu working on my G3 600.
    6.10 Edgy Eft,
    6.06 Dapper Drake
I used the alternate install and did the alterations noted above.
These versions are listed at the very bottom of the page.

  • I have an old imac 27' with OS 10.7. What will happen with lightroom 6 ?

I have an old imac 27 ' with mac os 10.7.
I try creative cloud and lightroom 5. It works perfectly... But what will happen with lightroom 6 ?

It's pretty simple. Lightroom 6 will not run on OS 10.7. See http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/2015/01/update-on-os-support-for-next-version-of-l ightroom.html
You will need to either stay with Lightroom 5, or upgrade your operating system.

  • I have changed my main computer and now i have no masters for many of my photo's, i still have the old machine. How can i move the masters over?

I recently upgrade my old G5 to a new iMac. I bought this as a refurb however so it came half set up. I did the usual swap of data files, but now many photo's say they do not have the original master so i can do nothing with them. How can i transfer the old Masters from my old machine to the new one?
I must admit i find the whole aperture filing system very difficult to get my head around.
I simply want to make files and store photo's in them! Any help on the masters would be appreciated

    Hallo,
what is your current MacOS on your new machine? MacOS 10.7.3? And your Apeture version 3.2.3?
How did you import your images into Aperture on your G5? Did you store them in the Aperture Library as managed masters or as referenced masters outside the Aperture Library?
If they are referenced, then you need to locate the folder with the master image files on your old mac and to tranfer them to your new mac, and then to reconnect masters and versions.
If they are managed, then probably some permissions got corrupted, when you transfererd the library and you should use the Aperture Library First Aid Tools to repair the permissions and to repair the library. See this on how to repair permissions and library:
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805
If you do not remember, if your library is referenced or managed, open Aperture on your old Mac and select one of the images in the browser.  If the Badge-Overlays show arrows in the lower right corner, then the imaster image files are referenced, also if on Ctrl-clicking the image you see the option "SHow in Finder" in the pop-up menu. Select this option, and it will open a Finder window with the folder containing your master images. Transfer these images to your new mac.
To reconnect the version to the masters on your new mac:
open Aperture, then select the images that need reconnecting in the browser,
then select "File -> Locate referenced files" from the Aperture menu.
In the window that pops up select an image to reconnect in the upper part of the window and select the corresponding master image file in the lower part of the window. If both images do match, the reconenct button will become available. Click "reconnect all".
    Good Luck
Post back if you have more questions.
    Regards
    Léonie
