  • I have an old macbook that I'm trying to get photos off of.  When I save them on an external hard drive to move them over, my new macbook can't read the files.

I am thinking about buying iPhoto 9.5.1, but I'm wondering if that will replace my old photo library completely?  Will I lose my photos and will I be able to convert them to my newer macbook pro?  Thank you for your help!

It will not replace your Library. It will need to be updated to run with the newer version, which iPhoto will do automatically when you run it first time. Thereafter you continue to use iPhoto as always.
Of course, before updating anything on a computer back up first

I have an old macbook that i want to give away.  i want to delete my information such as contacts mail etc.  how can i do that without deleting it from my new macbook pro or my ipad?

Go to System Preferences > iCloud and turn iCloud off.
Restart holding the Command and R keys and then choose to reinstall Mac OS X.  If you have applicaitons on the machine that should not be transfered to another party, after the restart choose Disk Utility and erase the hard drive and then install Mac OS X...that will return the machine to factory condition.

since upgrading phone to iOS 5. I have an old macbook pro and it is running snow leopard OS 10.6.8. I have a minimum of 40 recurring events per week, several of which change. I use the information to schedule future appointments based on those changes and it's causeing a major problem to not have the changes sync. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Did you try to replace the calendar info on the phone with the one on your Mac? You can find this option in iTunes/Info pane, Advanced section.

Apple makes a Thunderbolt to Firewire adaptor if your new computer does not have a Firewire port.

Your options depend on which MacBook you have and the version of OS X installed.

Unfortunately there is little you can do, Lion will not run on your machine.
However it is possible to access some features of iClould while staying with SL. If you go to iCloud you will see the web interface for the cloud.
Some but not all functionality is here. Check it out and see if it meets your needs.

  • I bought a barely used MacBook Pro and I have an old MacBook...

I bought a barely used MacBook pro and I have an old MacBook. Is there a way to make the MacBook Pro as a new out of the box computer, so I can send all my data to the "new" computer?

The Migration Assistant doesn't erase anything - it migrates or transfers data from one Mac to another, but it is a good idea to update your Mac's backup you will be migrating or transferring the data to before doing so to be on the safe side.

    Upgrading to Snow Leopard
You can purchase Snow Leopard through the Apple Store: Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Apple Store (U.S.). The price is $19.99 plus tax. You will be sent physical media by mail after placing your order.
After you install Snow Leopard you will have to download and install the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1 to update Snow Leopard to 10.6.8 and give you access to the App Store. Access to the App Store enables you to download Mountain Lion if your computer meets the requirements.
         Snow Leopard General Requirements
           1. Mac computer with an Intel processor
           2. 1GB of memory
           3. 5GB of available disk space
           4. DVD drive for installation
           5. Some features require a compatible Internet service provider;
               fees may apply.
           6. Some features require Apple’s iCloud services; fees and
               terms apply.

  • I have an old MacBook.  It is currently running OS X 10.5.8.

I have an old MacBook.  It is currently running OS X 10.5.8.I really just use it to manage my photos, internet, etc. I need to upgrade software to get latest itunes to sync w iphone 5s. Do I 1st need to download snow leopard? I want to make sure I go in the correct order.  Will the upgrades affect my time machine?

Looks like your computer is a MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008)
lower build, according to the model number 5.1;  in Mactracker database.
    Introduced
    October 2008
    Discontinued
    June 2009
    Model Identifier
    MacBook5,1
    Model Number
    A1278
    EMC
    2254
    Order Number
    MB466LL/A (2.0 GHz), MB467LL/A (2.4 GHz)
If so, (without second verfication by serial number lookup) RAM info is:
    Built-in Memory
    None
    Maximum Memory
8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple)
    Memory Slots
    2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM
    Minimum Speed
    Interleaving Support
    Yes
That means the slots in the MacBook 5.1 should support up to 8GB between
the two locations, so that's two 4GB chips; best if matching, replaced together.
•MacBook - How to remove or install memory:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1651
The better spec RAM may be found for MacBook models at OWC online:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/memory/Apple_MacBook_MacBook_Pro/Upgrade/DDR3
Be sure to match the specs and if ordering by phone, have your MB serial
number handy so they can match the parts correctly with the build year.
Hopefully this helps. The info on upgrading shows that could go to Mavericks
but the practical reasoning is be careful if you have older applications due to
a non-support of older ones when you go above Snow Leopard w/ Rosetta.
Also, some users of older Macs have issues with Mavericks, though supported.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • I have an old MacBook (Mac OSX 10.5.8) with iPhoto '08.  Is there any way to back up not only the photos, but the way I have organized them into events and labeled them?

I have an old MacBook (Mac OSX 10.5.8) with iPhoto '08.  Is there any way to back up not only the photos, but the way I have organized them into events and labeled them?

    Yes. Back up the Library.
    Most Simple Back Up:
Drag the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to another Disk. This will make a copy on that disk.
Slightly more complex: Use an app that will do incremental back ups. This is a very good way to work. The first time you run the back up the app will make a complete copy of the Library. Thereafter it will update the back up with the changes you have made. That makes subsequent back ups much faster. Many of these apps also have scheduling capabilities: So set it up and it will do the back up automatically.
Example of such apps: Chronosync - but there are many others. Search on MacUpdate or the App Store

Hi helpers I have very old MacBook Mac OS X 10.5.8 please could you tell me what operating system I should get to be able fully use my laptop as i cant use it properly anymore and doesnt connect with my Iphones etc thanks

    Josejanko,
You don't supply much info other than your machine is old, so here is some info for you to check thru.
Before doing anything you should have a back up, preferably 2, in the event something goes wrong.
You would have to start by upgrading to Snow Leopard, you would need to buy the disk for about $20 here  http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
Check the the requirements to see if your machine meets them.
You would then need to run the 10.6.8 v1.1 combo update to get it to 10.6.8 Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
You can then access the APP STORE and possibly upgrade to to further OSX.
You may have applications that will not be compatible with any thing past Snow Leopard, you can check those here Upgrading to 10.7 and above, don't forget Rosetta!
    http://roaringapps.com/apps
Office 2008 will not work with anything newer than Snow Leopard for an wxample
You may be able to upgrade to Lion or MT Lion or Yosemite, depending on your machine, from the APP STORE.
OS X Lion - Technical Specifications Lion
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6377Z/A/os-x-mountain-lion Mountain Lion
    http://www.apple.com/osx/how-to-upgrade/ Yosemite
    Hope this helps you
