I have an old macbook pro running 10.6.8. I would like to get it up to 10.8 to match my office computer
I want to upgrade macbook from 10.6.8 to 10.8. How do I do that?
Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and download Mavericks from the Mac App Store. If it's incompatible with Mavericks, it's also incompatible with 10.8.

I have a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.7.5. I would like to sync my contacts from my iPad with my MAC. I've checked all the appropriate boxes in iCloud on both devices. What am I not doing or doing wrong?
Bobby D,
Thanks for the help. I learned quite a bit from your answer. Turns out I was looking in Outlook for the MAC instead of Address Book on my MAC which already had all my contacts. Once I imported them to Outlook, problem solved. It will be interesting to see if when I add a new contact it updates Outlook.
Thanks again,

I got my phone last may and then i had another upgrade this past december. I completely broke the old iphone 4, but it has more space on it for movies and such so i would like to get it replaced. would i still be able to get it replaced even though it is broken and all the pieces were taken out of it?
No. Once you or any other unauthorized person opens/disassembles the iPhone, Apple will no longer touch it.

How do I transfer my latest updated contacts from my MacBook Pro Retina running 10.9.1 which uses the cloud to my old Macbook Pro running 10.5.8 which is not in the cloud?
Thank you very much, Linc, for your suggestion. I should have mentioned one other thing. The reason I want to do this is that I use an old phone and, after I upgraded to Mavericks, Missing Sync no longer worked with my MacBook Pro Retina - so my address book in my phone is getting out of date. Because my phone is old (it's a Palm Centro), they apparently will not likely update their software for this phone. So I was thinking I could sync my phone with my old MacBook Pro running 10.5.8 if I could regularly get that old address book to mirror contacts in my new MacBook Pro. You said I could open the contacts in the old MacBook by double-clicking the vCard file. But will that action put them into the old address book on the old Mac so that I could then sync the phone to it? I really need to overwrite the address book in the old Mac with the info that I am bringing over from the new MacBook.
I'd be grateful if you could tell me whether what I want to do is doable. This old phone works perfectly well and I don't need a new phone with a data plan that I would pay for but never use.
Thanks!
Note - I accidentally indicated that my response solved my question. I clicked the wrong box. Linc is the one who solved the problem. -
since upgrading phone to iOS 5. I have an old macbook pro and it is running snow leopard OS 10.6.8. I have a minimum of 40 recurring events per week, several of which change. I use the information to schedule future appointments based on those changes and it's causeing a major problem to not have the changes sync. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Did you try to replace the calendar info on the phone with the one on your Mac? You can find this option in iTunes/Info pane, Advanced section.

I have a new macbook pro running lion and want to update to ios 5 on my ipod touch. My old macbook only has 10.4.11 and can't be updated to lion - and won't update my ipod touch to ios 5. But the message on my new macbook pro says I have to update on the computer I normally use for syncing or my music will be lost. Is there any solution for this?
try exporting your iTunes libary from the old computer to the new one
take a look at this from apple
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4527
I am not sure you have home shareing with 10.4.11 but if you do it works very nicely

Have old MacBook Pro running tiger 10.4 want to save date to external hard drive and buy newer MacBook and still use same drive. Any suggestions, most WD drives say nothing about os tiger 10.4. The OS compatibility is much newer on the data. Totally confused. Not a computer person.
I haven't checked reviews recently but there's a difference between bare drives and drives with enclosures. Western Digital made some of the most reliable drives last time I checked, though the enclosures weren't all that great. It is convenient to get both in one package but I usually buy a highly rated enclosure and then put a highly rated drive in it myself. OWC sells some good enclosures but if they put a so-so drive inside of it then the package is only as good as its weakest component. If you get a package from them, ask them what drive is inside (some vendors have no idea what's inside - went to an Apple Store recently and they couldn't tell me what was inside some of their Apple brand enclosures). My first thought if buying a new drive would be to buy a OWC enclosure with a WD drive, but chek around because I may be out of date.
10 years ago Seagate was one of the best drives. Now they rate poorly in reviews. -

My hard drive has 70.93 GB available, yet when i have more than one internet tab open, i have to force quit google chrome because 'there is no more available application memory'. How can I solve this? I have a 2009 macbook pro running on 10.6.8. I have tried updating to mavericks through the mac app store but after it downloading for a day i got an error message saying there was a problem with the download. The same thing happens if i try to update itunes or the mac app store. After research, i have also tried repairing disk permissions, but every time they do get repaired the 'repair' button still appears, i'm not sure if it's because it was unable to repair the initial problems or if it just keeps detecting new ones.
2 GBs is a minimum in which you can do many things, but not concurrently. Be very careful to not install third-party add-ons, limit the number of applications you choose to enter in Login Items, run as few applications concurrently as you demand.
I would consider adding more RAM to your computer. Your model supports 8 GBs, so I would install that. -
I have a 2010 macbook pro running osx 10.6.8 and would like to interface my mac to my HD tv. Are any instructions available to reliably make this connection and if so what is needed on my part. Is the software compatible or do I have to upgrade to a later version OS. Thank You,
GeneI purchased a mini to HDMI cable and tried to connect to the TV but the TV is not recognizing the computer. I attempted to set sound and display settings under the "my Preferences" utility with no success. Again, I'm not sure if I need to upgrade my OS software Any Suggestions?

I have an old MacBook Pro, which just upgraded to OS X 10.10.3...in the process iPhoto disappeared, along with all my photos! I'm shocked, and have no idea what to do (I'm the furthest thing from tech). Did the photos go into iCloud? I have a photos icon now in the place of iPhoto, but no photos! Any suggestions or help?
Niel, thank you! Can't get iPhotos, but found my photos after clicking "photos" in the new app, after your suggestion. (option, click). Whew! I panicked, and appreciate your help. I'm going to miss my old iPhoto!

I have a new macbook pro running mavericks and only using Safari as my browser. 75% of my url requests are 'hung up' and freeze. I have seen other posts and have tried to clear cache, reset safari, remove extensions, but to no avail.
Any recommendations? If it works in a new user account, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Hi,
I have the old MacBook Pro. Upgraded to Mountain Lion which completely wrecked the system. So downgraded to Snow Leopard.
Then updated the combo update. Now stuck on blue screen at start-up.
Need help. Greatly appreciated. Thank you.Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
Utilities menu.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART
info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions. If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.
