I have an update notice which won't go away.

A notice came for an update. I couldn't find any way to signify that I wanted the update (which i do). Neither can I remove the notice, which I have now had on my screen for about a month. I can move it, but it is still a bother--and i can't get the update. Can you help me?

Hello,
Knowing what printer model you are using may help us provide steps that are directly for the model printer you are using.
The other solution (without knowing your exact printer) would be to uninstall all the software ensuring that the notice has gone away and then reinstalling the latest version of the software which should include the latest update as well.

  • Adobe automatic sends update notices which cause system crashes.

Adobe occasionally sends out updates for its reader and/or flash player. These updates disrupt various systems on my computer, including Firefox.
Various systems freeze before the Adobe update notice appears. When they freeze (for example: I use a laptop with a plug-in keyboard and mouse; they keyboard and mouse stop working) I now know that I will soon see an Adobe update notice.
I would like to set up Firefox so that I can block these automatic update notices from Adobe.
I have tried to solve these problem through the various help options on the Adobe site without success.

What you are experiencing is called a Kernel Panic and is NOT caused by the OS, they can be difficult to troubleshoot as they can be software or hardware relate. The X Labs writes and excellent article about them, in Kernel Panics. Please read it carefully. In order to troubleshoot your KP you need to post your last KP log, Apple provides instructions for doing so in How to log a kernel panic. Please follow the instructions in that article and post your complete KP report.
As mentioned previously it is NOT caused by OS X! There are common causes, including RAM issues, outdated applications, hard disks failing etc. By posting your KP log we can look at it and determine if it's software and if it is then point  you to what is causing the issue.

How much HD space do you have left?
Not sure if this matters but, make sure your HD is Journaled.
Repair permissions & then restart your computer.

  • App updates that fail & won't go away

Does anyone else have this problem?
I have four app updates on iTunes (for Billy Frontier, da Blob, Jules Verne's Return to Mysterious Island, and Space Monkey) that fail each time they try to download, with an error message. But they stay in my download queue, and every time I launch iTunes they try again, and fail again.
The thing is, these apps are already updated just fine directly on my iPhone! So these are useless updates, but they constantly fail and won't go away.
Before you suggest any combination of deleting/reinstalling from iTunes or the iPhone, I have done every combination you can think of.
This is not the first time this has happened. The last time it happened (also with Billy Frontier and da Blob), I had to call AppleCare, and they had to get a specialist to go into my online account and delete the items from my queue. So it's not a simple delete/reinstall fix. But it took a good hour and a half on the phone to explain it, walk through all the possible delete/reinstall combinations, and finally get the support person to get an iTunes person to fix the issue.
Does anybody have this problem besides me? And if so, have you found a fix?
    Thanks.

Can I bump this? Has anybody else ever seen anything like this?

  • After IOS 8 update, bookmark bar won't go away

After upgrading to IOS 8 on my iPad 2, in landscape mode in Safari, the bookmarks bar, now combined with links and "Reading List", won't go away. I believe it is supposed to go away when you select one of the functions, such as bookmark, so that the tab turns blue, then hit it again. It doesn't. I can turn it to portrait mode to make it go away, but I'd like to use landscape mode without losing a third of the screen to bookmarks.

Apple knows what's good for you - how dare you criticizing their benevolent parental guidance?
Jokes aside, I'm also a little bit puzzled that there's no option to choose between the "toggle on-off" setting in landscape mode and the fade out one as in portrait In Safari's settings. But there's actually some kind of workaround I'm now using most of the time in landscape mode:
When tapping the URL address bar your bookmarks will also show above the virtual keyboard as they do when Safari doesn't have any websites opened. As soon as one taps into that bookmark window to scroll or directly click a bookmark the keyboard disappears again. It may not be a perfect method, especially when bookmarks aren't organized in folders, because the top level bookmarks are displayed as rather largish icons. But those contained in a folder will actually display as a drop-down list (can be scrolled when having a large number of entries) similar to the normal bookmarks list. Once a bookmark has been clicked everything fades out and you're taken to the selected site. As my bookmarks are almost exclusively in folders such as "News", "Sports", "Tech" etc. I've come to appreciate this kind of bookmark navigation much more than through the standard bookmarks menu with its annoying behavior in landscape mode.

  • How do I get rid of the blue "downloading the latest applications" bar which won't go away even after uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox?

Can't get rid of the blue "downloading the latest applications" bar that seems to be just hanging and won't go away. I uninstalled and reinstalled Firefox, but the bar is still there after 2 days. I updated something (can't remember what!) on I.E., and it had the same blue bar, but it had a box I could x out of so it went away on I.E. I don't know why the blue bar is there on Firefox, as I did the update while on I.E.
    == This happened ==
    Every time Firefox opened
== I updated an application while on Internet Explorer.

    Annette,
#In the menu bar, at the top of the Firefox window, Go to Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions.
    # Locate ''each ''of the following extensions by name and click the disable button
#Restart Firefox as prompted and see if the undesired toolbar has been removed.
#The extensions to disable are: '''Crawler Toolbar''', '''MP3 Rocket Toolbar''', '''MSN Toolbar''', '''Search Helper Extension'''
If you don't need some / all of those toolbars, consider leaving them disabled.
You can probably remove these toolbars permanently from Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.

  • I have an error message that won't go away.

The message says "This iPad hasn't been backed up in 5 weeks.  Backups happen when this iPad is plugged in, locked and connected to Wi-Fi."  I have tried to do as instructed, but it doesn't seem to backup and the message won't go away.  I can't even shut the iPad down to try and reset it because I am unable to swipe to power down.  HELP!!

Found another discussion after I posted this.  Followed the instructions given there and it solved my problem!

  • Superdrive update error box won't go away

I installed the current updates and now every time I turn on my MBP I get this box telling me that
    "NO UPDATABLE DEVICES WERE FOUND"
"No devices were found that require this update"
It is annoying and I don't see where to uninstall the update to make the box go away.
But most important, Why did it not recognize my Superdrive to update it?

    Had the same trouble...
Try System Preferences > Login Items
You should see the updater in the list.
Highlight it, and then remove using the - button.
The same applies to any other user accounts on your system I assume...

  • I have a wired keyboard which won't work with my MacBook Air unless I use the extension cable supplied with the apple keyboard. Is this normal or have I got a connection problem?

I Have an apple wired keyboard which suddenly won't work unless I use the apple ext cable supplied with the keyboard...used with the wire fixed into the keyboard it just won't respond.  Do u think the keyboard is faulty. ? I want to use it with my MacBook Air and a big screen.

My best guess is that either there's a small deformation of the USB plug of your keyboard or some foreign matter (like lint) inside the keyboard plug. When I was setting up my new lab last year I had to use the extension cables and I found that the female end of the extension cable was considerably tighter than the computer's USB port. If an Apple store is nearby it would be worth taking the computer, keyboard, and extension just for piece of mind.

  • I have a pop up that won't go away!!!

Let me preface this by saying I reset permissions on my mac after it was giving me some trouble about being able to write files to a external drive as well as my own hard drive (the reset fixed this). I did this by booting into repair boot and reseting permissions and ACL's. The only problem is after booting up I get a pop up login box saying : "networksetup is trying to modify the system network configuration. Type your password to allow this." <<<< this window will not go away no matter how many times I enter my password or hit canel. It goes away for a few seconds and comes right back. I just discovered that my vpn won't turn on either.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, they may not work as described.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It won’t solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The following procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed. Don’t be alarmed by the complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out and won’t change anything on your Mac.
These steps are to be taken while booted in “normal” mode, not in safe mode. If you’re now running in safe mode, reboot as usual before continuing.
Below are instructions to enter some UNIX shell commands. The commands are harmless, but they must be entered exactly as given in order to work. If you have doubts about the safety of the procedure suggested here, search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects.
Some of the commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it. The headings “Step 1” and so on are not part of the commands.
Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. The other steps should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    kextstat -kl | awk '!/com\.apple/{printf "%s %s\n", $6, $7}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. If the command produced no output, the window will be empty. Post the contents of the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window), if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. You can then close the TextEdit window. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Repeat with this line:
    { sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|cups|isc|ntp|postf|x)/{print $3}'; echo; sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook; echo; sudo crontab -l; } 2> /dev/null | open -ef
This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
Note: If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before taking this step. If that’s not possible, skip to the next step.
    Step 3
    { launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)/{print $3}'; echo; crontab -l 2> /dev/null; } | open -ef
    Step 4
    ls -A /e*/{cr,la,mach}* {,/}Lib*/{Ad,Compon,Ex,Fram,In,Keyb,La,Mail/Bu,P*P,Priv,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo,Sta}* L*/Fonts .la* 2> /dev/null | open -ef
Important: If you formerly synchronized with a MobileMe account, your me.com email address may appear in the output of the above command. If so, anonymize it before posting.
    Step 5
osascript -e 'tell application "System Events" to get name of login items' | open -ef
Remember, steps 1-5 are all copy-and-paste — no typing, except your password. Also remember to post the output.
    You can then quit Terminal.

  • Downloaded update installed, but won't go away!

    Greetings.
I recently downloaded a batch of software updates, including the SuperDrive Firmware Update 2.1.
All updates installed perfectly, including the Superdrive update.
Now, each time I start the Mac, the update seems to be trying to install again. A disc icon appears in the doc, and a message box pops up saying something like 'update cannot be installed'.
How do I convince it to go away?
Thank you for any advice you may have.
    Best regards.

Open the Accounts pane of System Preferences and remove it from the list of login items for your account.

  • I have an error message that won't go away and stops me from using any other buttons in the screen.

I have an error message reading 'item over 1 byte. Connect to a wifi network or use iTunes on your computer to download 'tv show'.
When I connect it to iTunes or use a wifi network nothing changes.  The warning remains in place no matter how many times I push 'ok'.  iTunes actually says the show is already fully downloaded.
I can't use any other button or controls because the only thing responding is the 'ok' button on the error message.
I've now given up and am just trying to exhaust the battery.  What a joke.  This device is only a week old.
Anyone else with a suggestion on how to make the error message go away? I'm worried this will happen again.
    Thanks!

    Try this.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • ICal notice that won't go away!

I get a recurrent message alert, even when iCal is not "on". Showing a yellow ! triangle, it says The Anniversary calendar does not support events. You can't add events to the Anniversary calendar. Then you can click "OK" as usual. Only the alert box comes right back again, and again, etc. How to get rid of it. Even rebooting doesn't help.
