Hi All,
I have .app after all my applications, is this normal? e.g safari.app, stickies.app .
Thanks

Yes, it's normal - you should have a .docx extension on Word files, etc., as well.
If you don't want to see the extensions, you can always turn them off in the Finder's Preferences.

  • How big of an external disk do I have to use to back up my mac mini using the time machine app?

I have a new Mac Mini, and I wanted to begin using time machine to back up my files.  I tried to use an external hard drive that is used for our other machines (PCs) and it would not allow that hard drive to be used b/c it did not have a valid file structure.  I did not know how to fix that, so I was going to buy another external hard drive to support backing up the Mac Mini with OSX10.8.1 and a 500GB hard drive.  I saw somewhere that as lonmg as I had twice the RAM (4GB) it should be ok, but that seemed to be too small.  I was considering buying a 500GB if necessary.
Does anyone know if I can use a small 8GB flash drive to support the backups or do I need a 500GB or similar external hard drive to backup the Mac Mini with time machine?
    Thanks.

It is recommended that Time Machine has its Own Dedicated Hard Drive that is at least Twice the size of the Drive(s) you intend to Backup.

  • After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?

After a clean install, how can I continue using Time Machine?
I booted from my recovery partition, erased my HD, installed the same OS, (Lion, 10.7.5) then restored from my TM.
If it asks if i want to use TM, I say yes. When I chose the drive, it seems to want to start all over, instead of just picking up where I left off.
Is there any way of picking up where I left off?

    Hi Frank,
You are sure you looking in your Library in /Users/YOUR_USERNAME/Library and not /Library at the top level of your harddrive?
When you open iCal what do you see?  Are the calendars the two default Home and Work ones?
I really appreciate the responses -- especially if you are in the UK as opposed to Ontario.
Why, do you have something against London Ontario?

  • When I share a link (URL) only Apple computers receive the link. Others such as PCs and Blackberries get the message, but the field which should have the link is blank. Is this normal?  Why can I only send to Apple machines?

when I "share a link" (URL) using the pulldown menu in Safari, the email goes to all addresses I indicate, but only Apple computers receive the link. Others such as PCs and Blackberries get the message, but the field which should have the link is blank. Is this normal?  Why can I only send to Apple machines?

I have had a similar problem with my system. I just recently (within a week of this post) built a brand new desktop. I installed Windows 7 64-bit Home and had a clean install, no problems. Using IE downloaded an anti-virus program, and then, because it was the latest version, downloaded and installed Firefox 4.0. As I began to search the internet for other programs to install after about maybe 10-15 minutes my computer crashes. Blank screen (yet monitor was still receiving a signal from computer) and completely frozen (couldn't even change the caps and num lock on keyboard). I thought I perhaps forgot to reboot after an update so I did a manual reboot and it started up fine.
When ever I got on the internet (still using firefox) it would crash after anywhere between 5-15 minutes. Since I've had good experience with FF in the past I thought it must be either the drivers or a hardware problem. So in-between crashes I updated all the drivers. Still had the same problem. Took the computer to a friend who knows more about computers than I do, made sure all the drivers were updated, same problem. We thought that it might be a hardware problem (bad video card, chipset, overheating issues, etc.), but after my friend played around with my computer for a day he found that when he didn't start FF at all it worked fine, even after watching a movie, or going through a playlist on Youtube.
At the time of this posting I'm going to try to uninstall FF 4.0 and download and install FF 3.6.16 which is currently on my laptop and works like a dream. Hopefully that will do the trick, because I love using FF and would hate to have to switch to another browser. Hopefully Mozilla will work out the kinks with FF 4 so I can continue to use it.
I apologize for the lengthy post. Any feedback would be appreciated, but is not necessary. I will try and post back after I try FF 3.16.6.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
    - What version of iPhoto.
    - What version of the Operating System.
    - Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
    - History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
    - What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
    - Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

  • System Preferences stuck after Yosemite upgrade- advice on reverting to Maverick from Time Machine backup?

I just upgraded to Yosemite from Maverick overnight on my mid 2012 MacBook air via app store.  On first boot up this morning, I did NOT choose to encrypt my hard drive or use iCloud during set-up. I was proceeding thru the set-up steps, then got an unresponsive iCloud system preferences window, with a small drop down window to set up an apple id, asking for birthday, security questions, etc.  I have an apple id, and drop down is too small to reveal security questions or allow me to respond.  Quit didn't work, and I started trolling this support site to find out what to do.  I finally managed to force quit it just now. I am NOT a power user, I use my computer for email, photo organization, internet surfing, and some docs and spreadsheets. (I retired and switched to MAC to avoid all the microsoft BS, and haven't looked back. :-)
After reading all the posts here of people having trouble with yosemite on my critical uses, (email, etc) and the complicated answers to fix things, I am really out of my league. My goal now is to get to where I was last night before the upgrade, and wait until Apple fixes the many issues people are discovering before trying Yosemite again.  I did do a complete Time Machine backup prior to the upgrade.  My questions:
    1.  What issues, if any, are people having after reverting back to Mavericks after a Time Machine recovery?
    2.  Are there any special instructions to do this restore that are not in the standard restore instructions? Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support
I am a bit concerned to move forward, so any advice or re-assurance will enable me to take the next step.  I am gonna hang out and see what I hear before I take the plunge to time machine restore!

Yes, Mavericks has smashed people's old backups.. start a new backup in a different location.. or archive off the old backup from the TC onto a USB drive.. wipe the drive and start again. You can then access the backups on the USB any time you want.. plug it into the computer and use TM to look at the files.
Spend a bit of time reading how TM works.
And what you can do with it.
    http://pondini.org/TM/Home.html
Even if you just skim through FAQ.. check out how to mount TM backups from another mac..(effectively your old Mountain Lion install is another mac).

Keeping your old backup intact makes good sense.. !!

  • Safari fails to open after recent hard drive replacement and data transfer from time machine

The hard drive was replaced by apple under replacement scheme due to seagate failures. It was reloaded with latest ios, but safari would not open, reported failure.
I had re -installed my backed up info from time machine. i did go into back ups and copied previous safari app, and dropped it on my desk top. It opened ok. Is there an easy way to get this app onto the system and delete the faulty safari file.
    Hope this makes sense.

guess what, all fixed, the safari app installed by apple on new hard drive was 5 something, but 6.02 was needed, i installed 6.02 but it told me i needed OSX10.8.2 which cost me £13.99 but it now works.
    happy days

  • I'm losing all my recent work and back-ups in Time Machine as well!?

    Hi,
I've only recently started having this problem with my G5 Dual 2 GHZ PowerPC. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.8.
It has only recently started to freeze - sometimes when I open up applications for the first time of the day.
I'm a cartoonist and working mainly in Photoshop CS2. After the crash I reboot and all the files I've worked
on won't open up - I'm getting this messages: 'There was a problem reading the layer data. Read the composite instead?'
Then  'Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered!'
So I've lost all the work for the day when this happens. And to make matters worse all backups in Time Machine had
disappeared! So there is no backup.
Any help appreciated. Thank you very much in advance.
    Richard

For starters my hard drive is nearly full - I did delete quite a lot of stuff the other day but probably need to do more.
Your startup drive should be no more than 50% of formatted capacity and, if a small drive, have at least 40 GB of free space for proper performance of OS X and applications.
For a large drive as a boot volume, use the 50% rule of thumb.....
I don't know what a dedicated scratch drive is - but I'll find out.
Without a dedicated scratch drive, your system fills the startup drive with temporary files needed for the graphics software, eventually filling and leaving nothing for OS X to run on.
    Scratch Disks
OS X will easily use 10-15 GB of "virtual memory" (this is written to the startup hard drive} and CS applications will need another 10-15 GB.
Start manipulating files and adding effects, and a 100 MB file can easily have 10-20 GB of scratch files created in a prolonged session.
Get a new, internal 1 TB drive 7200 RPM drive for scratch.
External drives can be used, but internal is faster; better performance.
If your startup drive is the original drive, get 2 new drives........ replace the startup drive and add the scratch drive.
Western Digital Black drives are most highly recommended.
    Hitachi drives are also excellent.
Do not buy any type of "Green" drive.
I have a Iomega 500 gb external drive - that only has 9.3 gb available. This is set to hourly backups.
The loss of backups is likely due to the lack of free space on the startup drive.
This overly full condition disallows the systems ability to read, compare, compile and write the files to disk.
Filling a non-boot volume to greater than 90% of formatted capacity greatly hampers performance and increases the potential for data corruption and loss.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'How is it interfaced?' (Forgive me please!)
    No worries.
My question is how is the drive connected; USB, Firewire, other?
USB is the least reliable due to bus demands of the system and data transfer interrupts that occur during normal operation.
    Firewire is much more robust.
I did purchase a 1 TB capacity My Passport Essential SE portable drive the other day. Would it be better to use Time Machine on that?
As much as I like the internal drives of Western Digital, I dislike the ready made external drives from them, Seagate and Hitachi.
BUT, anything is better than nothing, though, for Time Machine, a 1TB drive is good enough for up to a 640 GB drive backup.
Plan on 1.5x capacity of a TM drive compared to the source drive.
I haven't repaired my hard drives lately - so will do this.
Good, but free up some space on the boot volume.

  • I lost all my pictures in Aperture and I used Time Machine to restore the lost pictures.

After losing all my pictures on Aperture and not being able to restore the the pictures using Time Machine as instructed by Apple Care.  I searched the web on how to restore the pictures using Time Machine and did not find a good solution.  So with trial and error this is the solution that worked and it is easy. Using Time Machine restore the entire Pictures directory. Then restore the Aperture in Application. Then go to the Pictures directory and click on the White Box label Aperture.  Do not open the Aperture Application it self Clicking on the White Box label Aperture will do the trick.  It worked for me and I hope it works for you.  Initially I lost 9500 pictures and I was sick till it was fixed.  Everything went back to exactly the way is was before, including thumnails.

Thanks for posting.  I have my library on an external drive and it spins processing before it crashes.  I have tried everything.  I think it believes some images are corrupted but who knows.
Do you keep your photos on your internal or external hard drive?  Did you just open aperture and choose new library or did you delete your old one?  I am not sure what to do, I have a big aperture library on a hard drive and time machine back up somewhere.  I have a mirrored hard drive so I may only have 2 copies of the same screwed up library, don't know if they back up on time machine also?
Time machine has always confused me to be honest and fortunately I have never had to use it.  So you can just replace your pictures?  I think I have a bunch of photos in iphoto library on my internal hard drive, I hope I don't end up with duplicates and triplicates.  Although I would settle for just about anything right now.  I have 15k pictures that I see briefly before it crashes.

  • My History became cleared after a power-cut - can I find it in Time Machine ?

Normally, after a forced quit, Firefox restores all open websites. After a power-cut, this did NOT happen ... when I looked in History I found it completely empty (although I did not clear it).
I have Time Machine on my Mac ... but where do I look to restore the History ?

How have you searched in Time Machine?
If you can't recover them from there, the you'll need a file recovery application like File Salvage
Note that you won't be able to recover the Library the best you can hope is to recover the photos. The can by the file recovery software may find many files with the same name. In all cases choose to recover the largest file.
