I strongly recommend you use compressor to do the conversion (if it will open the files - since quicktime will open them, it will more than likely do it.
Compressor allows you to customize presets and save them and apply them to multiple files. Although the interface may seem daunting, it's actually pretty simple.
Even if you can edit the avi in fcp, it's not a good idea. Liable to cause problems down the road.

I made a house walkthru in autodesk REVIT, and the only export option was uncompressed AVI. I cannot play that format on my mac, nor can I edit that footage in final cut pro. Is there a way to convert the AVI movie to quicktime or another format that can be easily edited in Final Cut Pro?Open the clip/s with QT and hit command+I. QT Inspector window will tell you what format your footage is (QT and AVI are not codecs but wrappers, containers of a given format).
Create/Export a QT movie version of that format using for example [MPEGstreamclip|http://www.squared5.com>. (MpegStrewamclip main menu>file>export to QT. There choose the same format)

Ooops! you mentioned autodesk anim...still convert the file into QT ProRes.

how can i view and apply new custom patterns without going to preset manager? i had this facility but have now lost it. i design patterns but am fairly new to photoshop. i used to be able to click on the drop down menu in patterns in the 'fill' box but cannot now do this. have i inadvertently clicked on something to turn this facility off? i now have to go to 'preset manager' and manually move my new design to the first box and click 'done' so that i can use it.
Which version of photoshop are you using?
After you define a custom pattern it should be added to the bottom of whatever patterns are already loaded.
For example, if you define a custom pattern and then go to Edit>Fill>Pattern, the newly defined pattern should have been added to the existing loaded patterns. -
Converting *.mpg files to mpeg4 using Quick Time Pro 7.
Recently I have tried to convert *.mpg files to mpeg4 using Quick Time Pro 7, I managed to convert the file to mpeg4 but there is no audio in the output file.
Is there a way to overcome this problem

Exporting a 75 minute film from Final Cut Express (FCE) HD(3.5) through Quick Time Movie is now taking over an hour instead of the 2minutes it used to take. The FCEMovie file is now 14 GB instead of the 1 GB it used to be. In both cases Self Contained was notchecked when exporting. I havetried trashing the Preference file to no avail. There was a message when opening the FCE project that 140render files were offline. Ichecked the box to forget them and also did a Render All Both and Render Only Mixdownbefore exporting. I had thisproblem a few days ago and solved it by reinstalling FCE. However after two days the problem hascome back. As far as I know I didnot change anything in FCE or the system when the export times and file sizeincreased.
I think you are correct about the longer version being a self-contained movie except that I did not check that option when exporting. However, I have opened another project of the same size and that one can be exported in the usual time, the problem must reside with the particular project. A clue is that to regain some disk space I deleted the render folder for several projects including the one I am having trouble with. Also when iI opened that project I got a message that files were disconnected and I think they were render files. I did re-render before exporting and that is when the file length increased by a factor of 13, even though it was not supposed to be self-contained. FCE is working OK with other projects when I export them. I am still puzzled.

I'm new Mac user and I'm trying to compress a movie from Final Cut Express HD when exporting using Quick Time conversion to MPEG2 format when I do that Final Cut application quits.

I'm not sure how you can get to that point: I cannot even find MPEG2 in my list of compression types while exporting with QuickTime Conversion... (I have 31 of them, and QT 7 Pro installed).
In any case, if you want to make a DVD and have iDVD installed, you have simply to Export/QuickTime Movie (without conversion): iDVD will take care of compressing your movie for you before burning the DVD.

Do I have to buy Quick Time Pro every time I upgrade?
I don't use Quick Time Pro much, about once every three or four months. Seems every time I want to use it, I've inadvertantly upgraded my system and have to purchase QuickTime Pro all over again.
Is there any way to avoid this regular price-gouging? Are there other non-Mac programs that don't do this?Are there other non-Mac programs that don't do this?
There are a number of free converter applications available that handle both QT compatible compression formats, as well as, other formats (e.g., MPEG, AVI, DivX, 3ivX, WMV, etc.) assuming you have appropriate QT components installed. I personally like MPEG Streamclip and/or ffmpegX. Both complement QT Pro and each other when it comes to various strengths and weaknesses. -
Need advise, I have purchased compressor 4.1 to compress my movie file, particularly MKV files. Problem is, that the software freezes when trying to import the 10GB MKV. Any one that can help?
Afraid Compressor won't work with MKV. If you have access to a system running an earlier version than Mavericks, and with Perian installed you can use MPEG Streamclip or Quick Time Pro to convert to a mov.

I have a .mov file that is 59 gigs. Is there a converter that can reduce the file size with minor resolution loss so I can import it into final cut express?
Open the file in QuickTime Player. Then do Tools > Show Movie Inspector. What does it say for Format and FPS?
At 59GB, I suspect you have either a 4 hour DV video or a 1+ hour video that was converted to Apple Intermediate Codec. If it's either of those, you can import it directly into FCE provided you select the appropriate Easy Setup first. Your clips have to match the properties of the Easy Setup you are using.
If it's neither DV or AIC then you need to convert it to one of those codecs. (QuickTime/DV or QuickTime/AIC) Many people in this forum rely on MPEG Streamclip (it's free and works great). -

A complication that I need to resolve is the fact that I am using Vmware
Fusion to be able to use Windows on my Mac. Now it seems that Time
Machine is not backing up my files
on that virtual Windows without additional configuration and my question
is whether you can advise me here or whether this is only a matter for
the Fusion virtual machine.If you want to use Time Capsule you can.. you simply bridge it and plug it into the existing router.. wireless can be either turned off or used to reinforce the existing wireless.. eg use 5ghz in the TC which is much faster than your 2.4ghz.
You can also use a NAS.. many brands available but the top brands are synology, qnap and netgear readynas series. These will all do Time Machine backups although how well always depends on Apple sticking to a standard. There are cheaper ones.. I bought a single disk zyxel which was rebadged and sold through my local supermarket. It actually works very well for TM at least on Snow Leopard. Major changes were made in Lion and again ML so do not instantly think it will work on later versions. I haven't tried it yet with those versions.
Any external drive can be plugged into the mac. Use the one with the fastest connection or cheapest price according to your budget. USB2 drives are cheap and plentiful. But no where near as fast as USB3 or FW800. So just pick whichever suits the ports on your Mac. Interesting Apple finally moved to USB3 on their latest computers.
TM should exclude the VM partition file.. it is useless backing it up from Mac OS side.. and will slow TM as it needs to backup that partition everyday for no purpose.. TM cannot see the files inside it to backup just the changes.
You need to backup windows from windows. Use MSbackup to external drive.. if you have pro or ultimate versions you can backup to network drive. But MSbackup is a dog.. at least until the latest version it cannot restore the partition without first loading windows. There are about a zillion backup software versions for windows.. look up reviews and buy one which works for you. I use a free one Macrium Reflect which does full disk backups and is easy to restore.. to do incremental backups though you have to pay for it. -

i have a ipod touch 2g and after a restore none of my apps will restore because it says that i need a newer version of the ipod software to run them they all work fine till i did the restore . is there any way to get them back ?
Your only way is if you have the version that was compatible on your computer such as in the recycle bin/trash or in a computer file backup. In that case delete the current version that is in your iTunes App library and replace it with the older version. Then sync.

The GPU in a iMac is NOT upgradeable.
You should check to see if your model of iMac meets the minimum specs to run FCPX.
I believe that your GPU is NOT OpenCL capable, and hence not supported.
Even if it works, you would probably get marginal performance.
What you can do is download the trial version and see how (and if) it works.
