For non-iTunes purchases you need a third-party program like one of those discussed here:

iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - just media purchased from iTunes Store
i-devices are intended to by synced with iTunes (iTunes --> device), not transfer things to iTunes.  For transferring songs from i-device to computer see commercial software utilities (with the exception of iTunes purchases). Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing):

This is one of the most basic of functions of the iPhone.  This is a good time for you to read the User Guide.  All the instructions on how to operate yor phone are included.  I suggest you read through it.

    1) authorize iTunes on the new machine for your iTunes store account(s)
    2) connect your device and right-click or control-click it in the iTunes Source list, then choose transfer purchases from the shortcut menu that appears.
    3) sync the device
iTunes will wipe the iPhone but, since you transferred your purchases in the previous step, your content will be in your library and you can re-populate the iPhone with it.
for everything else, check out this post by Zevoneer.
also, there are PhoneView and iRip.

If there was no backup, where would you recover the photos from.  Sorry but those pictures are gone.

My home computer which has my iTunes library on it how can I transfer all of my music from my iPhone to my new computer

The sync is one way - computer to iphone.  The exception is itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases.
It has always been very basic to always maintan a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  Use your backup copy of your computer to put everything back.

  • I plan to upgrade from an iPad 2 - 16gh to an iPad2 - 64gh.  How can I transfer all my data to the new iPad?

How can I transfer all my apps & data from an iPad 2 - 16g to an iPad 2 - 64g?

Transfer your purchases of the iPad to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases, then backup up the iPad by right-clicking it under 'Devices' on the left-hand side of iTunes, and you can then restore that backup onto the new iPad (a list of what is included in a backup is in this article - it excludes music, videos, synced photos).
The restore won't copy passwords onto a different device, so you will need to re-enter your email, router, and any website passwords on the new iPad.

  • Since I downloaded the most recent version of iOS, my iPad and iPhone do not have all the music (from CD's) anymore that I have on our home computer iTunes Library.  How can I get all our music onto the music libraries on the iPhone and iPad? Thanks!

    Hi
Since we downloaded the latest version of iOS on our iPad and iPhone, and synchronized our music collection in the Cloud, we can no longer see on our iPad and iPhone the music from our CD's that we have on our home computer's iTunes library.  We can only see music in the iPhone and iPad library that have been purchased on iTunes.  How can we get all our music from our computer's iTunes librbary visible on the iPhone and iPad?  Thanks, Nick

  • New laptop, how can i transfer my ipad music to the new itunes without deleting anything??

I got a new laptop and want to tranfer my music. I have an ipad 3 registered to the old one and want to register to the new laptop without having to delete my music and playlists. Is this possible?

" so it should be a way to just transer a whole library without loosing all of this when i get a new laptop..."
This is why it is basic to maintain a backup copy of your comptuer.
The ipad simply mirrors the selected content of your computer.
You can transfer itunes purchases:  File>Transfer Purchases

I had my ipod synced to an old computer that I no longer have how can i get all my stuff on the new itunes without erasing it

    Most Windows users don't.
Purchase an external hard drive and use the backup software that comes with it to backup files from your computer.
Buy TouchCopy and install it on your new computer, connect your old iPod and transfer your songs to your computer.

  • Computer Crashed, Can I transfer my iPod music to the new iTunes?

My computer suddenly crashed before I could back up my iTunes library. Can I transfer my iPod music to the iTunes on my new computer?

There is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
    YamiPod Mac and Windows Versions
    iGadget Windows Only
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
iPod Access Mac and Windows Versions
    PodUtil Mac and Windows Versions
    iPodCopy Mac and Windows Versions
    PodPlayer Windows Only
If your iPod is set to update automatically take care when connecting back to your computer and an empty iTunes. If it is set to automatically update you will get a message that your iPod is linked to a different library and asking if you want to link to this one and replace all your songs etc, press *No*. Pressing "Yes" will irretrievably remove all songs from your iPod. Your iPod should appear in the iTunes source list from where you can change the update setting to manual and use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it: Managing Your Songs Manually
You can also use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on Windows hold down the Shift + Ctrl keys (on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘) keys). This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and the iPod will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Then go to Edit>Preferences>iPod and check the "Manually manage songs and playlists" box.
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc then it will be safe to return it auto-sync again. I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up in case you have problems again. External drives are comparatively inexpensive these days and you can get loads of storage for quite a small outlay.
