The phone is legal but I cant trace the original date of purchase.

The website you mentioned is closed, that part is correct. However, registering your products with Apple is still possible.
The other method is to call Apple Support, and they can manually register your product.

That is because the phone is locked to the Orange network and an o2 sim card is not going to work with a phone that is locked to Orange.
You either need to purchase an Orange sim card and use that in the phone, or you need to get your friend to contract Orange and get the phone unlocked so that you can use an 02 sim card.
At the moment you will never be able to use the 02 sim card if the phone is locked to Orange. Either use Orange or get the phone unlocked. It is as simple as that.

If you are trying to activate an iPad or iPhone and it is asking for the original owners Apple ID and password, you have encountered the Activation Lock. No must contact the original owner to get permission to use the device. Are you sure the "friend" who sold you this iPad was the primal owner? By all means get iLife but just for the record you don't HAVE to use Apple's photo application;
there are many more around, quite a lot of them free.

Only Vodaphone can authorize the unlocking of this phone. Apple can't/won't help you.
However, Vodaphone, like most carriers, will only authorize unlocking for customers, obviously not you. You need to get your friend to request that Vodaphone authorize the unlocking of this phone.

You'll need to sell it to someone in the US, as it can only be used in the US on the AT&T network and is useless to anyone else.
How you go about selling it is up to you. Unless you have friends or colleagues in the US who want an AT&T iPhone your only real option is selling it on some online marketplace such as eBay.

Well, a portion of it will appear in the activation screen. It could be enough to jog her memory. She is going to have to reset the password so she can remove the device. If she cannot remove the device from her account, the device is useless to you. If she does not want to try and remove it, then demand your money back. Apple cannot assist you. If however, she purchased the device new, she can take the device and the original sales slip to an actual Apple Store and they may be able to help.
