I have duplicate images on an external HD (Mac)

I wish to remove the duplicate images and re-import the non-duplicates into Lightroom 5 but still keep the present collections with the approporiate images.  How?

Yes, it is LR in English.  I know why emails have been confusing.  I have tried to simplify the problems below:
For example, a lot of my files are “missing” because I mistakenly formatted the HD that had them.
For example:
Previous location: /Volumes/Internal 2TB/Master Photos/PHOTO TO BACK UP/DIGITAL PHOTOS/Sterling 60th birthday/284_8414.jpg
Luckily, I have backed up these files to an external HD where I can locate them (which is time consuming).  Plus, there are duplicates of the same image files on this external HD.
For example:
The files on the HD that I mistakenly formatted can probably be mostly recovered using recovery software such as.  But again, this is time consuming and the recovered image files may not have the metadata used by the LR catalogue.
So, what to do? Should I first, cull out the duplicates (bmp above shows essentially six images of 284_8414.jpg) and then tell LR that the correct master folder is in Lacie instead of /Volumes/Internal 2TB/Master Photos/PHOTO TO BACK UP/DIGITAL PHOTOS/Sterling 60th birthday?

  • Why do I have duplicate images in my projects

    Hi,
Here is the issue. I have all my pictures or files in projects because is how I organized my pictures. But I created an album to share it in the cloud, and the images that were selected to be in the album are shown twice "duplicated" in the project. However, if I try to delete one of the duplicated versions that are inside the project it says "it will be deleted from albums, folders etc." Is that normal when I create albums with pictures that are alrady in a project or am I doing somehing wrong.
    Thanks.

Each image in your Aperture library will be in exactly one project, but can be used in as many albums and smart albums as you like, without creating duplicates. The albums just reference the images in the projects - they are just index cards grouping your images in different ways.  You are not seeing duplicate versions in the albums, the versions in the albums are linked to the projects. You will see that, when you ctrl-click an image in the album and use the command "Show in project".
If you delete an image from a project, it will automatically vanish from all albums.
The relation between albums and projects is explained in Kirby Krieger's user tip:

  • Eliminating duplicate images in my catalog

I have duplicate images in my Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0 catalog that I want to eliminate.  When I check properties the image is identical except for the text format describing the image e.g.  img 001.jpg, IMG_001.jpg  and IMG_001.JPG.  I am looking for a way to get rid of duplicates without clicking on them individually and deleteing them. Also I want to prevent this happening again.  Any suggestions?

I don't know of any way to automatically eliminate duplicates -- all programs require manually deciding which photo is the duplicate and which is the one to keep.
    Two programs I use are:
DupScout, which has a freeware version:

  • Will using an external hard drive cause me to have duplicate files on my itunes library?

I put all my ITUNES MEDIA folder on my external hard drive from my older computer.. I recently bought a new computer and installed Itunes. I synced some of my Itunes purchased songs back on by using my Ipod.. however the songs I ripped from my cds are still not reinstalled in my library.. I will have to use my external hard drive or re rip those.. and there are a lot of them.. since I have already replaced some of the ones I purchased back on using my Ipod will it duplicate them if I use the prefrences method and return them all from my external hard drive? If i delete my files that I have already returned on my new computer before using my external will Itunes remember which are Itunes purchased music and which arent as well>??? also how exactly do you move music from an external? just plug it in and click the prefrences box about syncing files and keeping Itunes library organized?? any other thing to click?

An iTunes library consists of both the media and the database that knows which files are in the library and hold details of ratings, playcounts, playlist membership and other details not stored in each file's metadata.
Depending on how you have moved content to your external drive you may find you are only moved the media, but not the database. If you import this media into a new library it will work, but your library will be seen as "new" with respect to any devices that you have and iTunes will want to erase and reload them, losing you current selections, settings and data on the device.
These are two possible approaches that will normally work to move an existing library to a new computer.
    Method 1
Backup the library with this User Tip.
Deauthorize the old computer if you no longer want to access protected content on it.
Restore the backup to your new computer using the same tool used to back it up.
Keep your backup up-to-date in future.
    Method 2
Connect the two computers to the same network. Share your <User's Music> folder from the old computer and copy the entire iTunes library folder into the <User's Music> folder on the new one. Again, deauthorize the old computer if no longer required.
Both methods should give the new computer a working clone of the library that was on the old one. As far as iTunes is concerned this is still the "home" library for your devices so you shouldn't have any issues with iTunes wanting to erase and reload.
I'd recommend method 1 since it establishes an ongoing backup for your library.
If you have an iOS device that syncs with contact & calendar data on your computer you should migrate this information too. If that isn't possible create a dummy entry of each type in your new profile and iTunes should offer to merge the existing data from the device into the computer, otherwise the danger is that it will wipe the information from the device.
If your media folder has been split out from the main iTunes folder you may need to do some preparatory work to make it easier to move. See make a split library portable. Alternatively you could copy over the iTunes folder and make sure your external drive has the same drive letter on the new system as the old, however moving the library into a portable form will make every subsequent move that much easier.
Should you be in the unfortunate position where you are no longer able to access your original library, or a backup of it, then see Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device for advice on how to set up your devices with a new library with the maximum preservation of data.

I would suggest you visit an Apple dealer, preferably an Apple Store if there's one in your city, and ask for assistance in determining what you need. The questions and issues you bring up are rather complex to address in a technical support forum and would be better addressed in person where you and the salesperson can ask questions back and forth to arrive at the optimal setup.

You used the data.  Verizon can not see what it was sued for.  However your phone can see whats apps used the data.  go to settings-data usage- there will be a place that says data usage cycle.  line the dates up with your cycle.  then there will be a bar graph below that   extend bother white bars one all the way to the left and one all the way to the right.  after those are extended below that will be a list of apps,  there should be one that used over 2 gb and that will show you what app used that data in her purse

  • Unable to see .zmg image on USB external drive

While attempting to image a Tecra S2, I used a bootdisk to image the laptop via the USB external hard drive. The image file was not viewable but all other images on the external drive were. Tried renaming, relocating image, recopying the file to the drive but same in all instances. The file could not be seen from Linux. The image size is 3.2 GB and the likely original source of the image to the server was from a burned CD. Any thoughts on why this file was not viewable but all others were.

I have just installed Photoshop Elements for a MAC. MY photos were in iPhoto, I have 47,000 pictures and my drive on my Mac laptop is not large enough. I store my photos in iPhoto on an external drive. Can I store all my photos on an external drive when using Photoshop Elements? If so, in what format should they be stored in? I do I move them from iPhoto to the new storage location? How do I call them up in organizer? And how do I call them up to Edit? I do not want to store any pictures on my Apple Mac laptop. I want to store pictures on several external devices.

Yes you can store images on an external hard dive and have them referenced in Organizer. It’s best to export copies to separate folders/subfolders and that will ensure iPhoto does not get corrupted.
Alternatively you could continue to use iPhoto with the Elements Editor set up in the iPhoto prefs as your external editing app. Then there is no need to use Organizer and no need to duplicate your images.
You can then call up photos directly from iPhoto as normal with the additional option e.g.
Double-click on a thumbnail to edit in iPhoto editor.
Control (right) - click on a thumbnail to edit in the elements app.

  • Simple way to select and remove duplicate images.

As I work diligently to have Aperture manage all of my image files I have come top the realization that I have a number of duplicate image files scattered over a number of resources.
Is there a simple way to have Aperture identify the duplicates and more importantly to keep from importing duplicate images into the management library?
    Thanks!

I have not heard of an automated way to accomplish this. I beleive G has given you the standard method above. Aperture does not have a programed way to do this, and there is no way to prevent importing duplicates except by being careful not to do it in the first place.
However, if you know you imported some duplicates and know approximately when you did it, you could use a Smart Album to show you the images. Click on the blue Library icon and choose menu option File>New Smart>Album. In the Smart Album Smart Settings HUD, click on the checkbox that says, "Import Session is one or more of the following," then check on one or more of the import sessions listed. Be sure to also check the checkbox "Ignore stack groupings." Once you find the duplicate import, you can delete the images from your Aperture Library.
BTW, I use a referenced file system, so if I want to place images into an external folder that has already been imported into Aperture, I use Finder to apply a color label. The color label shows up in Aperture's import dialog and I can then select only the images with the color label applied. I then have to remember to remove the color label in Finder.

  • R&R Backup (Image) on two external USB drives

    Hi Forum,
in the early BIOS state of my T500 and working with Vista I had to rebuild my system several times due to OS failures. For that reason I periodically run R&R and make images on an external USB drive.
Since I'm traveling very much I always have the USB drive with the image with me. The drive contains one basic backup and some incremental backups up to level 25 (at the time being).
Now my goal: in case of a theft or a failure of that USB drive, I want to keep a second image on another USB drive at home.
    Now my questions:
1: Is it possible to make backups with R&R (basic and incremental) of one computer on several USB drives?
In that case R&R must detect which incremental level is present on the USB drive and create the appropriate backup (management of the levels on the USB drive, not on the computer).
Example: USB drive A contains one basic backup and some incremental backups to level 12 (consistent) - USB drive B contains one basic backup and some incremental backups to level 17 (consistent as well).
2: If the answer to question 1 is "yes" - does R&R manage this automatically in the windows interface or is it necessary to use the DOS level (rrcmd.exe). Which switches are to be set?
    Many thanks for help
    Axel

It is  a difficult question: the help file isn't entirely clear.
Here is my recent experience: using R&R 4.21 I had backed up my machine to the internal drive + 1 external USB drive several times, so that there was the base back-up and several incrementals on both drives. I also had copied the base backup + earlier incrementals to DVDs using the advanced menu entry for that task, just to be on the safe side. And, using another program (the free version of Syncback by 2BrightSparks), I regularly duplicate documents + pictures to the USB drive, so I'm covered in 3 different ways on 2 types of external hardware.
On one or two occasions I did an incremental backup on the internal drive only--but the next time I did an incremental with the external USB drive attached, the missed incrementals were synchronized onto the external drive.
Now, 2 weeeks ago I decided to zap the main disk and rebuilt the OS + programs to have a "clean slate" for 2010. When I had finished reinstalling everything minus personal files, I made a base backup (the only choice offered) on the internal drive with the external drive attached. This effectively erased the existing earlier backups on the external drive and copied over the new base backup.
So this synchronization only operates in one direction: the external USB drive's store of R&R backups is a replica of what is on the main internal drive.
I strongly suggest trying this all out (i.e. missing an incremental backup on the external drive, then making sure it has catched up after the next incremental backup) after making an external copy on DVD of the R&R backups. In fact, if you have the nerve, the patience and the time (and the DVD backups!), you should also try a bare metal restore of the DVD backup (I did last year when I bought this machine and hadn't too many personal files on it-- R&R 4.21 does actually work!)
sorry i can't be more specific, but my advice is to practice the "disaster recovery" at least once, early on, in order to be sure how it works if disaster does strike.

  • Editing with photoshop gives duplicate images

Prior to going to Lion and iLife 11, when I edited photos with Photoshop that were in iPhoto, the edited images was all that was visible in the iPhoto window, but could revert to the original image that was filed "invisibily" in background if necessary.
Now as soon as I begin to edit a photo (which is nearly all my digital photos) a duplicate image is created to the right of the original image in iPhoto and both remain in the iPhoto window. However, if I edit using iPhoto (which the tools I need for my editing), a second image is not created and the revert to original image option is now available. This behavior is what happened when using Photoshop to edit previously.
If my1000  or more photos each year are doubled on the Mac as well as what is synched to the iPad, this is going to really eat up space at 2-4 MB per high resolution picture. Importing images to iMovie or iDVD will be a nightmare having to chose what appears to be the corrected image since they both appear to have the same film ID when do a get info. If I so  grab of a group of pictures I will have to delete them in iMovie/iDVD or have to select one by one (which my be the most time consuming).
Am I doing something wrong? Was this a change in behavior with edits? If it is, I sure don't like it.
I don't want to try to delete an original image so there is only one image showing  if I can't revert to the orginal image from the edited version.
Is there anyway to just see the edited image in the iPhoto window?????

This is a change introduced with iPhoto 11. You can't change the behaviour.
IPhoto menu -> Provide iPhoto Feedback and let them know what you think.
If you're worried about space then you can run a Library from an External Disk very easily.

  • I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  When I connect my  external monitor it initially provides a nice display - very accurate and  no distortions.  But, within a few minutes the screen begins a incessant series

I have a one year old Macbook Air 13.  I have a brand new 22" external monitor.  In turning the Macbook and monitor on, the monitor displays very well, but within a few minutes it begins this incessant blinking (temporary black out of the screen that lasts anywhere from 1-5 seconds).  This has been going on for a long time (it also happended with my older monitor which apparantly I threw out when I should have kept it thinking it was the problem).  From reading various blogs in the Apple support community, this appears to be a widespread problem, but I don't find a solution, only a lot of speculation.  I'm very surprised the Apple folks haven't figured this out.   As a new Apple user, heretofor, I have been very impressed with the support and effort to get fixes out to users.  This, however, has me frustrated to the point of junking my Mac and going back to a PC.  I love the Macbook Air and most of the functionality, but I cannot function without an external monitor. Anybody have any ideas, please help.  Frustrated, Jim

Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,
Let me know if this worked for you.

  • I'd like to copy and paste a few Gigs worth of photos residing in iPhoto (ver. 5?) to a flash card - is there a simple way to do this w/o the issue of "duplicate" image numbers (when they are in fact unique images, but the translation is lost)... thx

Tried doing this a few yrs ago and it was maddening, the receiving flashcard (or desktop) kept flagging duplicate image numbers and my only choice to was to delete one or replace, when - because they are unique images - I wanted all of them to be saved on disk (is there a way to auto rename to prevent this)??? Thx.

Just tried to export photos and kept getting messages that a certain photo was corrupt or some such thing and then it stopped and did not continue with export. Frustrating as I spent hours moving ~1200 photos into 2 folders on desktop.  Tried doing a few at a time and one always stopped the entire export. Is there a way around this?  I.e., program so it exports photos that work, does not export those that are damaged?  Would be nice to know before the fact (in moving to folder) that photos have issues.  Thanks for any help - again!
