‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • I have forgotten my password on my iPad

I have forgotten my password on my iPad and have not synced it to my new Macbook Pro before. How should I go about unlocking it if it is not backed up anywhere?

Sadly, you're going to have to restore your iPad as a new device.  If you create a password again, make sure you write it down somewhere, as you're going to be starting all over with your device since you never backed it up.
You'll need to connect your iPad to your computer and restore it in iTunes.  Below is a link which will walk you through the steps.

I have forgotten my password to my ipad. I have it plugged up to itunes now. how can i restore the password?

well that and if your last backup was before you put the passkey on

  • Hi i have forgoten my password for my ipad and cant acces it

hi i have reseted my password for my ipad and i have turned it of and when i tried to get back on it, it wouldnt let it me on so i tried to restore from back up it wouldnt let me so i have wondered how to get back on?

If you cannot remember the passcode, you will need to restore your device using the computer with which you last synced it. This allows you to reset your passcode and resync the data from the device (or restore from a backup).
If you restore on a different computer that was never synced with the device, you will be able to unlock the device for use and remove the passcode, but your data will not be present.

I have forgotten my password, and i have never synced it to a computerr before... what do i do?

Unfortunately, you'll have no choice but to reset it to factory condition, using iTunes on a computer.  Any data you had on it is gone, unless you can remember the password.  Your apps will still be available to re-download, without having to re-purchase them.

  • I just recently purcased my new ipod touch 5 but, have forgotten my password. It has not yet been connected to a computer but has been conected to icloud. How can I reset my password?

Hi, I just recently purchased an ipod touch 5 and have already forgotten my password. I have not yet connected it to my computer so when I tried today it didn't show up as a device. When I tried to go into icloud on my other device, thinking that may help, it would not let me change the email because it was my school ipad. What should I do?

Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.

  • I changed my passwords on the sites I frequent on my macbook pro but was told I would have to change passwords on my iPad and iPhone as well. Is this true.

I changed my passwords on the sites I frequent  on my macbook pro. Since doing that I have been informed that I would have to do the same thing with my ipad and iphone too. Is this true? Not sure I understand why. Do I just change it to the same password on each?

Any password for an internet site is managed by this site's system. Your device only provides an access to this site.
So if you change password from any device, you'll have to provide your new password for this site, whatever device you use for connection.

  • My iPad and iPhone wont connect to my iTunes Library.

My iPad Air and iPhone 5s wont connect to my iTunes Library on my Macbook Pro.
Both will see the library and try to connect but as it reaches 1/4 of the way it stops.
If I turn off my iTunes Match on both devices, the full library loads on the iPhone only. I can go into the library and it will play. Does iTunes Match have to be turned off?
On the iPad, it shows the that shared library is connected to but it wont allow me to move off that screen. It freezes. I push the home button and it closes. I can reopen but it is no longer connected to the library. I cannot get further than this.
My Apple TV works perfectly connected to the same library.
I dont have more than 5000 songs in my library or more than 10 movies and 300 + episodes  of TV series.
Any ideas to what could be causing the issue with the iPad?

  • IPad and iPhone wont connect to iTunes

Can anyone explain why my iPhone and iPad suddenly won't sync to my MacPro. They have both been syncing no problem until today. Using iTunes 10.6.1 and neither device appears in iTunes. However if you go into devices in preferences both products are listed. Tried to sync via WiFi and that failed also. However they do appear on the other Macs but I need them to sync to the MacPro. Went through the troubleshooting list on the Apple Support page, have tried different USB slots, cables etc but still can't connect. Hope someone can help. Thanks
