I have found a IPAD, searched everywhere to find the owner, facebook, Apple etc. I have now erased all data but when I turn it on it says the IPAD is currently linked to an apple ID. Can I override or delete this?

I have bought a new car and found an IPAD in the back seat. The dealer cannot tell me who drove the car. I serached everywhere to find the owner, Facebook, etc
I decided to erase all the data from the IPAD, everything went OK BUT when I tried to set it up, it asked me for the owners apple ID.
The message is "this IPAD is currenly linked to an Apple ID"
Is there a way to delete this account thus allowing me to use it.
If not, I guess I'll throw it away

Activation Lock is doing exactly what it was designed to do - preventing a non-owner from using the device as their own.
But why just "throw it away"? The dealership should be willing to tuck it away in their lost and found, as the owner may well show up looking for it?

Thank you very much for your answer! I have 2 Apple ID, and I have tried both of them and the problem continues. I founf several peolpe with the same problem in apple communities foruns and that really seems that there is some problem. I addded the links for 2 of those discussions.

I did find another point worth mentioning.
I use my iPhone 4 with a corporate Exchange email account. I had deleted the account from my phone just before I did this backup/restore process...and I thought my battery drain was much, much better (if not outright fixed).
Later in the day, after seeing my battery life improve to near-new behavior, I re-added my Exchange mail account. Considering I have 1 yahoo account and 3 gmail accounts, the Exchange account adds a 5th email account.
What happened? Battery drain back to "worst case". Removing or re-adding the Exchange account is like toggling between decent and terrible drain conditions.
Bottom line is that I re-added a couple dozen applications and battery life didn't change. By far, the Exchange account drains the battery worse than any other app and setting. This account must be polling very frequently and since people tend to send very large file attachments to that account, perhaps those effect the battery drain even though I have the account set to not download attachments.
Anyone running Microsoft Exchange might be able to confirm what I see? If so I can open an enterprise ticket with Microsoft and bug them on this issue.

There was a glitch obviously. I recommend a restart. While the phone is powered on, hold the power and home button. Keep them held down while the phone powers down and starts back up don't release till you see the apple logo.

My Apple ID is disabled. Earlier this month fraudulent charges were made, and have now been resolved. But when I tried to buy something in the app store, it says my Apple ID is disabled.

I kind of agree with Philly on this one. If you get a new email address, there is no need to establish an entirely new account to use that address. You just need to modify your account to show the new email address. This way all your purchase history and rights to purchased apps stays in place. Creating a new iTunes/Apple account each time your email address changes really doesn't make sense in my opinion. I only point this out for future searchers who end up on this thread.

You cannot merge Apple ID accounts, that has never been supported.
You can contact the Apple ID Security folks per the listing in http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699 and they can help reset security questions and get the account working.

Hello there, can someone help me please. I erased all data and settings last night and now my IPAD just shows a line across it with the apple logo. It is not responding to the on / off switch. I have connected the IPAD to my laptop so i can reinitilise it but nothing is happening - it doesn't appear as a device on my laptop (the USB port is working OK) Has anyone else experienced this and how did you overcome it? We are fellow users here on these forums. If you bought the iPad from another person and you are being asked for their id and password to activate it then you will need to contact that previous owner and ask them to remove it from their account : http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4515
