Those buttons are used to scroll through the tabs if you have too many to display. If all of the tabs that you have open are visible, the buttons should not be displayed. If they are displayed all of the time there may be a problem with the theme that you are using.

Also, some basic isolation needs to be done. Does it show up in itunes on any other computers? do you have other cords you can test with to see if it might be the cord? if the phone doesn't show up on any computers, it's likely your phone has a hardware issue

Everything I have ever done on my iPhone 4 was downloaded and copied. EVERYTHING! ALL deleted Pictures, texts and emails that had ever gone through my phone were retrieved. My phone was hacked and everything taken. I was told there is a SIM card reader that can do this. I don't even know how I could retirenve this imformation when I don't even have a back-up. There have been many stories of people getting free replacements, a close friend has received four replacement iPhones after the screen cracked from dropping it.
Screens crack due to a variant of reasons, humidity/climate change. If someone punched it and broke it deliberately then of course it shouldn't be replaced but it should be able to withstand some drops/pressure on top.
It may not be under warranty but you will find people who got a nice genius to replace it anyway.

Boot the MBP with the OPTION+COMMAND+R keys down. The result should be a display showing a revolving globe. By following the instructions, you will be able to reinstall the original OSX. Then you may reinstall Yosemite.
A solid Internet connection will be required.

I left my iPhone attached to my computer to do an update and now I can't use the phone at all. It was taking so long I left it, when I came back there was an erroe message saying that I need to do a factory restore on the phone. It wasn functioning perfectly before I attached it to iTunes to do the update and now since I can't even be sure that the back up completed, I'm faced with losing a lot of stuff recently added to my phone.
I don't want to do a restore, I just want my phone back to how it was this afternoon before I connected it to iTunes.

If the screen shows a plug going to itunes, then you have no choice, It's in recovery mode. You'll be given the chance to restore from a backup either from itunes or icloud.
I assume when you got the message to update (was this for the ios or update some apps?), that was before the device when dead. At any rate, doing a restore does not change the ios.
