I have inherited 2 Power Macs sans Airport- what do I need please?

Hi everyone, I'm a first time poster, long time reader. Thanks for all the help everyone has given me through other's threads!
Problem: I have inherited 2 Power Macs and one Mac Pro, none of which have wifi capability.
In order to rectify this, can someone please tell me which Airport (Expresses?) I need to purchase for each one? Feel free to be specific- I can use G or N but prefer N. I plan to buy on a popular bidding site or equivalent.
All are different, here are the specs:
1: MacPro 1,1 (G5 2.66GHz, Quad Core Intel...) (No OS yet, would Lion be pushing it?)
2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
3: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.0GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
Please don't ask what I will do with them, I do not intend to share my plans for world domination on an open forum.

OK, thanks for that, but I should have been clearer:
I would rather have the internal apple solution- many are available on auction sites (£5-£10), I just need to know which one is appropriate for my use. Can anyone supply me with a model / part number for the original Airports used in a PowerMac G5? Specs follow:
2: PowerMac 7,3 (G5 2.3GHz, Dual Core PPC...) (10.5.8)
(The Intel G5 airport search is over. I have found an airport extreme card on an auction site and bought it for £5.)

Hi Mary, the other so called "Features" of iClound will not work for like Syncing, but eMail will.
MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.
iCloud Mail setup, even in 10.4/10.5…
Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

The Disk Utility, Carbon Copy Cloner, SuperDuper, or similar software. For best results, place the second drive inside the computer or in a FireWire enclosure and boot the computer from it before removing the internal drive.

    Hello USME,
'Tis a common problem on old Macs.
Do as Allan says: open the door and blow out all the dust bunnies. Canned air from Wal-Mart or Radio Shack can be handy (though sort of expensive) especially for blowing through the back of the power supply. A cool Mac is a happy Mac.
Be sure your Mac can breathe. The air intake is on the bottom of the case, so be sure a deep pile rug or too many papers on your desk are not blocking the air supply.
Feel the power supply and the processor with your hand. They should be warm but not hot; if you have to move your hand away, that's too hot!
Check the fan on the power supply, and on the processor if it has one. Take a flashlight and peer in the back of the (Mac) case through  the grille; make sure the fan is turning. If it's not, the power supply won't work for long.
Fans are not considered serviceable, though they will succumb to mechanics of determination. A CPU fan is easy and straightforward.
A fan replacement will not cure an already damaged power supply; the PS may already be done for. Used power supplies for a DA are hard to come by, and not especially cheap when found (c.$50). An entire  working DA or Quicksilver may often be found for under $100 on eBay, and swapping in your HD is easy and simple... this might be cheaper and more expeditious than repairing an expired DA. Replacing a power supply is fairly easy, but it's a nuisance and requires a 2mm Allen head wrench in addition to the usual #2 Phillips head screwdriver.
In my experience, power supplies and CPUs are about equally likely to fail. There are a few other possibilities, but they are not nearly so common.
    Good luck!... Jon

I have an i Mac with airport wireless. What steps do I need to take to change name of wireless(airport)???

You should use Airport Utility, in your Utilities folder (or you can search for it in Spotlight, the magnifying glass in the top right of your screen) to administer the Airport. There, you can change the wireless network settings, including the network name.

  • I have a Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz 1 GIG Ram, what is the latest OS X I can run?

I have a Power Mac G4 1.25 Ghz 1 GIG Ram, what is the latest OS X I can run?  I am currently running Jaquar.  Where can you obtain older versions of OS X?

Actually you can run up to Leopard 10.5. It requires a G4 867mHz processor so you are comforatbly over the minimum specs.
That said, I offer two caveats regarding Leopard that may make Tiger 10.4 more appealing:
    1) Leopard may want more than 1G RAM. With currently available modules, you can take your Max RAM to 2GB. You can install up to 2GB RAM.
    2) If you don't have a video card that supports Core Image, things can be choppy. My 1.25 G4 is a tad sluggish with Leo because I have the original ATI Radeon 9000 64MB VRAM vid card. If you have a Redeon 9600 or higher, you likely have Core Image Support. Use System Profiler to Identify your exact video card. SP is in Applications > Utilities. Select "Graphics/Displays" from SP's "Contents" pane on the left to view the specs of your card in the main pane. It wil tell you if Core Image is supported.
If you can get Leo running fine, it's better in that many programs no longer support 10.4.
Looks like yo uare in the Continental US. Call Apple at 800-MY-APPLE and ask for an operating system specialist. Tell them you need 10.5 to support new hardware. I bought that way in March, and it sounded like they wre going to keep Leo in stock for a whie because of the larger number of olders Macs that can;t run Snow Leopard or Lion.
Be very, very careful of Mac OS software on auction sites. I've seen too many that were improperly described and would not work. Likewise the gray Leopard install disk that came packed with another Mac model won't work.
I just checked--OWC does not list any Apple System software at this time.

  • I have a power mac and the hard drive is about to die, i have a new hard drive to install, i know how to remove and put the old in the second space and load the new one, then what...when do reinstall the OS and transfer data from old drive

I have a power mac, the hard drive is struggling, I have a new hard drive ready to install, after I pull the old one and put the new one it's place and place the old one in the next slot ready to transfer data....how do I start this next step.  Do I down load OS, and go to utililities...please just a step by step after hard drives in position.

Hi Susan, you must have a Mac Pro, Powermacs cannot run 10.6.x
Anyway, once you Install the new drive, you likely must Format it...
    How to format your disks...

(To Install OSX on an IntelMac the Drive it needs the GUID Partitioning scheme mentioned at the bottom.)

Then Install the OS & on first boot of the new install, after a step or two, avail yourself of Migration Assistant & Migrate everything.

I have a power mac G4 OS 10.4.11  I just purchased a new iphone G3S how can I get it to sync to itunes? When I try I get a message that I need OS 10.5  can I load 10.5 on it? can I still buy 10.5 ?
    CPU speed 800mhz
    memory 512

    Don't fret.
Find a copy of Leopard (call Apple Customer Support and tell them that you have a machine that can't run Snow Leopard).
You could also go to eBay.
    After that, install it:
    http://lowendmac.com/osx/leopard/unsupported.html
Leopard will run fine in a 800 MHz machine.

  • I have a Power Mac G4. I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I get an error message stating it doesn't recognize the disc and an error

I have a Power Mac G4 with OX 10.4.11.  I have previously burned DVDs with no problem.  Now I've gotten two different sets of messages.  One states that
the disc is not readable and an error code: 0x8002006D.  The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025.
What is going on?  I need to burn discs immediately for a conference next week.

"The more recent message states the disc is incompatible and an error code: 0x80020025."
The error (0x80020025) refers to an unsupported drive (not disk).  I've read about relaunching the Finder to correct the problem.  Choose "Force Quit" from the Apple Menu and then choose "Finder." Click "Relaunch" and see if the drive still produces the error.  If there's no change, I'd be tempted to replace the drive.

I have a power mac G3, B&W, 400 Ghz. 1gHz mem. I have installed OS 10, It says I may install OS 9.1 later. I have 9.1 installation and restore disk at my disposal. Which do I use and  how can I install updated firmware before installation? I have tried ti install OS 9.1 but I keep getting the error messege "my firmware is out of date". What am I doing wrong. Please help me!

Technically it can't without a special software known as LeopardAssist.
    The firmware required is here:
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) Firmware Update 1.1
Power Macintosh G3 (Blue and White) with SCSI (I could not find, remove any SCSI card before using Tiger or Leopard)
The installer disk must look like:
    http://www.thebookyard.com/images/OSX9DISK.jpg
And not say Upgrade, Dropin, a Mac model, or OEM.  Once you have 9, you can get 9.0.4, 9.1, and 9.2.2 updates through the iinet link mentioned earlier.
Firmware updates and other OS 9 updates are on the following links for reference, but the iinet is where the downloads are still available.

I have a Power Mac G5 with an OS 10.4; what upgraces are available?

Leopard 10.5.8 is the last operating system a PowerPC Mac can be upgraded to.
    Everything else newer requires Intel.
The DVD for Leopard are getting expensive since Aple has stopped producing them.
