I have installed Lightroom 5.5 on my HP workstation

I have installed the latest update Lightroom 5.5 on my HP workstation but it will not open even though it looks to have installed OK. I have tried uninstalling it and downloading it again, but it still doesn't work. Any ideas what is wrong or what I am doing wrong? Previously Lightroom has worked fine.

You would need the catalog and the images from the old computer if you want your work that you have done previously. You will have to copy the images and the catalog from your old computer to the new one. Don't you know where you imported images to?

No, I did not have to purchase the upgrade. But here is what I believe my
error was: earlier today, I upgraded to LR 5.6 on my laptop. Then I
upgraded to the same on my desktop, but became confused and installed it
TWICE.
Is this the reason that Adobe is asking me to license Lightroom and to come
up with a serial number? (I have my serial # from LR4, but it does not do.)
Should I try to deactivate LR 5 and then try again to upgrade to it?
Or am I still confused and need to purchase the LR 5.6 upgrade? Thanks for

What you describe seems to be related to the cached licensing information not being accessible or it being corrupted. Adobe has a help page about what to do to fix it:

I have installed Lightroom 5, but only have a licence number. Where do I put this number in order to register my softward.

The Lightroom was purchased through an organisation that is why I have a licence number. I have e-mailed the organisation, but of course they haven't got back to me yet.
I can open my software as it is asking me for a serial number which I don't seem to have as it wouldn't accept the codes on the box.

The license key or the serial number is one and the same thing. It is a 24 digit number which is required to activate your software.

Erasing your Mac shouldn't harm your internal hard drive but erasing does clear Yosemite and everything else off of it. Are you not able to restore it with your Time Machine backup?

If they are the same nef files that you were importing into your PC, see if the reason is an error message like the thread above this one. Permissions issue.

Calmc what error message do you receive when you try to open Photoshop Lightroom? Also which operating system are you using?
Also if you wish to download a copy of Lightroom 5 you can download the installation files from http://www.adobe.com/cfusion/tdrc/index.cfm?product=photoshop_lightroom&promoid&promoid=DT EML. You will be prompted to enter your serial number when you open the software.

Yes, I consider this advisable, too - for the moment.
There may be still bugs in for which the ability to revert to LR3 can be very helpful. E.g. if tone curves are lost: the best intermediate solution could be to open LR3 and save the settings to xmp, then close LR3, open LR4 and read metadata from file.
I might uninstall LR3 probably when LR4.2 might be out...
