I have installed Yosemite, lost all battery power.

I have installed Yosemite, it works fine on power supply, but shuts down as soon as I unplug as if there is no battery installed at all, can I switch back to Mavericks, that worked fine?

Hi paulgrant777,
It is possible to revert to Mac OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) from Mac OS X 10.10 (Yosemite) if you have a Time Machine backup of your system made before installing Yosemite. See this article -
OS X Yosemite: Revert to a previous OS X version
As your issue is power related, resetting your MacBook Pro's System Management Controller may resolve it -

The answer usually is No. You'll have to start from scratch. Unless you have a backup.

    No.

  • I have installed Yosemite and now I cannot open Pages

I have installed Yosemite and much to my dismay I cannot open Pages

You need to update Pages v5.2.2 to v5.5 via the OS X App Store. Yosemite requires Pages v5.5(.1).

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
To restart an unresponsive computer, press and hold the power button for a few seconds until the power shuts off, then release, wait a few more seconds, and press it again briefly.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
    a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If a desktop Mac hangs at a plain gray screen with a movable cursor, the keyboard may not be recognized. Press and hold the button on the side of an Apple wireless keyboard to make it discoverable. If need be, replace or recharge the batteries. If you're using a USB keyboard connected to a hub, connect it to a built-in port.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • Installed Yosemite, lost admin privileges

Purchased a "new" (new) Macbook Pro c. 2012 from Best Buy a few days ago (insurance claim, I've been using Macbooks since 2003), default OS X Mavericks, downloaded and installed OS X Yosemite. Download/installation seemed to take a relatively short amount of time, but I soon realized this was with the "may have to restart multiple times" and "install further updates/restart" caveats. Well, I didn't immediately install/restart updates after initially installing Yosemite. Then, spinning wheel of death, manual push-button shut down, and subsequent attempts to restart result in progress bar loading for a few seconds and then entire computer shutting down. Restarted in recover mode, "re-installed" OS X, now computer will boot, but have lost administrator privileges, despite the fact that the few programs I had originally installed still remain and remain functional. It seems that when I "re-installed" from recovery mode, it didn't reinstall at all, but rather, finished the update. Well, now system modifications require a password AND a username, as opposed to only asking for a password. Only, there's not an administrator any longer, the account used to set up the computer in the first place has now been rendered a "standard account." It really would be nice to at least edit the time settings without "reformatting" the entire hard drive. Any advice? TEEYA!

    Hey there Ketan,
In order to help you troubleshoot the cause of this Kernel Panic, I would recommend you use the troubleshooting in the following article:
OS X Yosemite: If your Mac restarts and a message appears
If your Mac restarts unexpectedly, an error known as a kernel panic occurred. After the restart, you’ll see a message that your computer restarted because of a problem.
The most likely cause is faulty software. A kernel panic can also be caused by damaged or incompatible hardware, including external devices attached to your Mac.
Important:    To print these instructions, click the Share button  in the Help window, then choose Print.
If the kernel panic is caused by a known problem, the faulty software is identified. To make sure that this software doesn’t continue to cause kernel panics, move it to the Trash.
If the faulty software is not identified and your Mac continues to experience kernel panics, try the following:
Restart your Mac in safe mode. If it successfully starts up in safe mode, choose Apple menu > App Store, click Updates, then install any available updates.
Uninstall any plug-ins or other enhancement software from manufacturers other than Apple. If you recently updated OS X or an app, plug-ins and other software that worked in the past may no longer be compatible. Read the manufacturer’s documentation (including Read Me notes) to be sure the software is compatible with your version of OS X.
Disconnect all USB and FireWire devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. Remove hardware upgrades from other manufacturers, such as random–access memory (RAM) and Peripheral Component Interconnect cards. Then try restarting your Mac.
If this resolves the issue, reconnect one device at a time, restarting your Mac after reconnecting each one, until you determine which device is causing the problem.
    Reset parameter random-access memory (PRAM).
Use Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test. These apps can tell you if hardware you installed, such as additional memory, is incompatible, improperly installed, or defective.
If the steps above don’t help, try reinstalling OS X.
Note:    If you moved or renamed an OS X system file or folder, you must reinstall OS X. It won’t work to just replace or rename the specific item.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • My iPhone 4s is suddenly red hot and lost all its power.

I charged my iPhone 4s overnight and it was fine this morning.  But I have just gone to use it and it was red hot and all the power has gone.  I'm obviously trying to recharge it now, but has anyone had a similar experience.  I bought it 18 months ago....

Did you transfer the backup for your 3GS to your iPhone 4S?
Try a reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release.
If no change after a reset and you transferred the backup for your 3GS to your 4S, try restoring your 4S with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from a backup to see if this makes any difference.

  • I have installed Yosemite and now my Photoshop 5 fails to start up because of a fatal problem. Please help me out!

I have been too enthusiastic installing Yosemite. My Photoshop 5 doesn't start up anymore because 'of a fatal problem'. What to do. Please help me out

Two points: Java or not, Mac should (and did for me) make(s) it easy to download the Java. After the above message appeared to me, I discovered that Mac, Adobe or someone made it easy for me to do so, and I did. If you don't get guided to the download, Google or Java will enable you to find it. Whatever happens, try doing what I did, which solved the problem for me as mentioned above: find the original DVD for Photoshop (or the Suite) and, without canceling the already-installed version, re-install. I have the whole CS 5.5 Suite, but the installation disk enabled me to "install" just the Photoshop portion and confirmed the serial number. The re-installation is actually, in this situation, just a repair. There is a workaround if you don't have the original disk (a workaround which you would have to pursue on the Adobe site) and, if you registered the program with Adobe, you will be able to find your serial number online if necessary.
The riddle remains as to why Java supposedly has nothing to do with Photoshop, as you were told, whereas the message to download SE 6 that you reproduce in your query does appear (as it did for me).
"Le vie del Signore sono misteriose".

  • Why can't I open up Illustrator CS6 after I have installed Yosemite?

I just installed Yosemite. Now when I try to open Illustrator I get the message to install Java SE6. When I am sent to the Java site it has me install Java 8. Once this is done, I still get the same message when I try to open Illustrator.

    Harry,
You should be able to get round the issue altogether without the legacy version (and its security implications), by following this:
    http://oliverdowling.com.au/2014/03/28/java-se-8-on-mac-os-x/
It is even more thoroughly described in this thread, see post #3 on by gator soup:

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the BOOT_TIME log message that corresponds to the last boot time when you had the problem. Now clear the search box to reveal all messages. Select the ones logged before the boot, during the time something abnormal was happening. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
For example, if the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down for three minutes before you forced a restart, post the messages timestamped within three minutes before the boot time, not after. Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract—not at the beginning.
If there are long runs of repeated messages, please post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ System Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A crash report has a name that begins with the name of the crashed process and ends in ".crash". A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". A shutdown stall report has a name that ends in ".shutdownstall". Select the most recent of each, if any. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot. It's possible that none of these reports exists.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash or panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Installed Mavericks, lost all iphoto files

I was late to the Mavericks party, and installed it last night.  The only reason I did this is because I wanted to download Numbers, and it wouldn't let me without the most updated OS.  So of course, being a good minion, I just said yes to everything Apple tells me, and all of a sudden, I no longer have iphoto.  Everything else is FINE.  I called customer service and she told me that my only option is to buy iphoto again.  Ok fine, Apple wants to bleed me for another $20?  I can't win, so I may as well comply.  However, when I go to the app store, it says "update" and when I try that the error message says it was purchased with a different account or has been "cancelled" whatever that means.  For the record, I tried both apple accounts I have, nothing works.  The problem is, my files are already lost!  I don't care about my whole photo library, it's all backed up, but there is one file on there, a video, that is(was) important and now lost forever?  Why?  I have updated this computer a hundred times, and nothing has ever been a problem.  First off...why is only iphoto not recognized?  Second, why the **** do I have to pay for this app again?  Third, can I get my files back?  Apple is supposed to be above this petty crap...very annoyed.

  • Adobe Suite will not run with most recent Java after I have installed Yosemite

I have updated to Yosemite for my Mac, when trying to open Adobe Photoshop it prompted me to install Java 6, which I installed, then Java said to update to 8, which I did. My photoshop and other adobe suite programs still will not open (except Bridge) and keeps coming up with the error message to open the webpage to download DL1572.

This is a strange error. I had the same problem but my CC is running.
Which is your version of Photoshop please?

  • Upgraded to Yosemite, lost all sound fonts

I recently upgraded my OS from Mavericks to Yosemite. Everything was going well-ish after the upgrade (generally slower than Mavericks, which is annoying) until I noticed that some instruments weren't making a sound in a Garageband composition. Turns out my sound banks (Library > Audio > Sounds > Banks), where my sound fonts are stored, are now empty. I've checked both Libraries, under Macintosh HD and "User", but no sign of them. I've searched using Spotlight and they're nowhere to be found.
This is pretty frustrating as I've spent a long time gathering sound fonts for use on various projects, but they've all been removed in one fell swoop. Thanks Yosemite.
Anybody else come across this? Am I just unlucky? I'm hoping this is the only chunk of files to go missing after the upgrade! I guess time will tell.
If you're thinking about updating, copy your sound banks folder to a safe location first!

You don't need to have your photos and music in the cloud. Mine aren't. I have my libraries on the computer.
If the iPhoto app came with the computer, then it is probably not in the App Store under your purchases unless you purchased a newer version. If you have it on your iMac and didn't upgrade to 10.10.3 yet, check the version on it. Version 9.6.1 is what you need. If it isn't, update it. Then copy it to your laptop.
If you don't have the new Photos application on the computer with 10.10.3 running, then something didn't update properly. Search the drive to be sure it isn't there. If you can't find it, then you might try running the combo updater here:
OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update
