I have iPhone 4 and am currently using ActiveSync; however the contacts aren't backing up in iTunes, only the ones that I entered directly on my phone?  What am I doing wrong?

I have iPhone 4 and am using ActiveSync for contacts/calendar.  Problem I'm having is that when I sync in iTunes, only the contacts that I manually enter are being backed up.  I'm concerned about losing my Outlook contacts as well.

If you're using ActiveSync, the contacts are not local to the phone. They are cached, on the phone, but they exist primarily on the Exchange Server that it's tied to. They do not back up like local contacts do. The same goes for the calendar.
