Did you purchase your iPhone used from another person? The iPhone is then Activation Locked as described here:

The former owner will have to unlock the iPhone or you will never be able to use it.

Well, at least it's good that there are no hardware issues - that's a relief and one problem area that you can check off.
OK, so let's summarize so I can get a clear picture of what's going on. If you try to download something from your web browser, what happens? What if you try to download a small utility such as "EasyFind" from the App Store? Or is the problem specifically linked to downloading updates?
I'm just trying to get a feel for if anything really means anything?
Usually what you download from, say, a website, goes into your Downloads folder. It's the default folder for things like that. Apps from the App Store are downloaded to your Applications folder. And software updates are generally, I believe, held in a temporary folder so that they can be installed (in many cases) when you're asked to restart.
It could be something as simple as repairing permissions on your start-up disk. You're running Snow Leopard, right? (That's what your profile says.) Try opening Disk Utility from your Utilities folder, selecting your boot disk and try verifying permissions. If you come up with some errors, try repairing permissions. After that, go ahead and verify your boot disk - you won't be able to repair it at this point, but at least you can see if you have any errors.
Let me know about the anything and get back to me after you've verified and repaired permissions and verified your boot drive.

I did read that maybe as the sim card is quite old that once you update you can have problems even though it was working just fine before i updated the software. Thanks

I have an issue with my iPad and iPhone. They apps keep on crashing, even the standard apps like mail and safari, notes etc. I have reset the divices and have the latest software, what am I doing wrong? Why would this happen? It is annoying and I want to fix it as I am in the middle of stuff and apps just close! Help.
I'm guessing it's an app that is on both devices. Delete all common apps, reset and see how they run.
Also try clearing your recently used list...
- From any Home Screen, double tap the home button to bring up the Recents List
- Tap and hold any icon until they wiggle
- Continually press the red to delete the apps from this list.
- Press the home button twice when done
With a quick finger, you can clear this list very quickly. -
I have tried everything I know, but can't locate the catalog- I do not know where it is or what it would be named or what carbonite would call it. Also, the photos are not at the "same" location. I have over 22,000 photos and can't imagine trying to re-catalog. It is my life and of course, I need something immediately for a family funeral. Not to be too dramatic.... Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Did you ever restore your last iCloud backup? That contains you camera roll photos & videos, text messages, app data, settings, etc. It will also redownload your apps and other purchased media.

A computer illiterate friend created 3 accounts on his iPhone 5 but forgot the passwords. He can't reset the password as his yahoo address is no longer valid. Erasing the phone doesn't solve the issue as the Apple server identifies the hardware as registered. How to register the phone with Apple?
I helped him create a new email address and new iCloud account on my Mac but when we try to register the phone with Apple it says: Maximim accounts limit reached for this device. How can he register the phone? I read different threads and found out that only Apple care can do that. We're in Romania and don't know where to call. I tried to Purchase on the i Tunes store, but forgot security questions. Not even Customer Service is able to help me. How can I spend the 20 bucks I have on my account now if even the phone assistants can't help me? I can't rememeber any answer to any of mu questions and I can't even register my product (iPod Classic) even though I purchased it 6 months ago. Customer Service held me on the line for 30+ minutes asking me all the time if I rememeber one anwer to my questions (to which I repeatedly said no) and there seems to be no way to circumvent that security system, not even with my second email, also registered on My Itunes. Isn't there any way for me to get those 20 dollars back I already have in your store or at least reset my security questions if I don't rememeber?
