I have iPhoto '09, version 8.1.2  . Is there any way I can update to iPhoto '11 without having to pay for it? Or is it a completely seperate program, not just an update?

Welcome to Apple Support Communities
iLife upgrades like the upgrade to iLife '11 from iLife '09 is paid. However, when you have got iLife '11, all updates are free of charge.
In conclusion, you need to pay for iPhoto '11, but then you will not have to pay until Apple releases a major update. As you are running OS X Mavericks, you can purchase iPhoto in the Mac App Store

I have Iphoto '09, version 8.1.2 (424). I am having an identical problem.  All my pictures are imported into Iphoto when I downloaded them from my camera.  Until recently, I thought that the pictures were actually saved in the library.  Since I need to crop my pictures for the web, and Iphoto doesn't do that, I purchased Photoshop Elements to do that.  To my surprise, when I try to get a picture from Iphoto to Photoshop, it can't be done. That was when I realized, after wasting a lot of time, that the photos are not in the Iphoto library.
I started naming the pictures on Iphoto so I had a recognizable file name to open on Photoshop. Couldn't find it.  I looked in the Backup folder and the Transfer software folder (I have a Nikon camera), and the names I entered in the Iphoto display, could not be found.
When I am trying to upload a photo to the web, I get the Finder folder showing  with an active folder called "Photos" under "Media", which only displays Iphoto and PhotoBooth.  This is a folder name that I cannot find in my HD anywhere when I look for it.  If I edit a picture with Photoshop, I am not going to save it back to Iphoto (not sure whether it will work properly).  How do I get my folder of edited photos to show when I want to upload a picture to the web?
Where (the name of the folder) do I find the pictures I see displayed on the Iphoto library, including any name changes, keywords added, and so on?

See my response to your other post.

    Hello,
I have iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2, when I double click on some of the pictures I see exclamation mark instead of my pictures.
    Thank you

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

I currently have iPhoto '08 version 7.1.5 and need to update. However, will I loose any of my saved calendars or books?

In gereral no - iPhoto '09 and iPhoto '11 both have the same themes as iPhoto '08 - there may be some changes necessary depending on themses used, fonts user, etc
Before upgrading be sure you have a good backup in cae something goes wrong

OK, here are a set of screenshots with my step by step - maybe you will be able to spot where I've gone awry:
I find a photo in the Library that I will delete from an album:
I go down to my Albums and find the picture in one of them:
I hover over the pic so the little down arrow appears in the bottom right-hand corner. I click on it, then click on the Trash Can in the window that drops down:
    Gone from the Album:
    Gone from the Library:
    In the Trash:
    Whaddup with that?

  • Have iphoto '08, version 7.1.5 & can't buy photos or book.

Have iphoto '08, version 7.1.5.  Won't let me buy prints or books.  Says I need iphoto 7.  What's the website to get it, how much does it cost and will it delete my current photos if I download it.  Thank you.

You are correct - is OS X 10.3.9 correct for your OS as your profile states?
There are third parties that may be able to print the book from a PDF - Google will return some

You have to buy iPhoto from the Mac App Store.

  • Hi!  I just updated to Mountain Lion to make full use of iCloud, and I am attempting to turn on Photo Stream.  I currently have iPhoto '09, version 8.12, and think I need to update to iPhoto'11, but I'm reluctant to do this due to very bad reviews.

Obviously only you can decide what is "worth it".  Millions and millions and millions of people use and like iPhoto '11.  Some don't. If you want PhotoStream then you must upgrade to the minimum software levels

  • I have iphoto 9 (version 8.1.2).  When I opened up iphoto it said that I had 0 pictures (it had over a 1,000) prior.  My screen saver was and has been set to a foler in iphoto and still displays the photos.  How do I retrieve my pictures?

When opening Iphoto (Iphoto 9 version 8.1.2) I went from hundreds of photos to 0.  I looked in my harddrive and could not locate the pictures under library or photos.  I tried rebuilding the system (ctl. alt. and opeing the program).  I would assume all my pictures are lost except for when my screen saver runs, I still see all of my old photos.  How can I retrieve my photos?

go in to finder than photos they should be somwhere in there. after you find them select add to iphoto

  • Hello All, I have an older MAC and currently have iPhoto 09, version 8.1.2. Every time iPhoto is opened I get a message about a upgrade to a newer version of iPhoto, but when I select the link, it takes me to the Apple website and says the page I'm look

    Hello All,
I'm Gene. I have an older MAC desktop and am running iPhoto 09, version8.1.2 (424). Each time I connect my iphone to my MAC I get a message that there is a newer version of iPhoto, but when I select the link, I am taken to the Apple webpage and get a message that the page I'm looking for is not available. All I would like to do is upgrade my iPhoto. Do I need to upgrade to the latest version of iWork, and if so, what version and how would I do that? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks

The iPhoto version that is currently available at the App Store os 9.5.1 and requires the Mavericks OS X.  The early 2008 24" iMac can run Mavericks.  Once you have Mavericks installed (it's free)  you can purchase iPhoto 9.5.1 from the App Store.
If you don't want to upgrade to Mavericks you can purchase a copy of the iLife 11 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com and install iPhoto 9.  Then up trade it to 9.4.3 via the updaters at the  Apple Downloads website: Apple - Support - Search

  • I have iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5)transfered to EHD - lost pics

My IMac was too full with all my pics on my hard drive so I moved pics to an external hard drive.  Um....  Did not have the good directions I have found since then before I moved the  iPhoto Library.  I now have all photos and the Library on my EHD.  Can open I Photo and all pics are displayed.  The problem now is when I click on the pics in IPhoto I do not get the pic but get the black-white circle with the ! inside.  If I search for that jpg by the # or name I can locate it on the EHD and open.  How can I get back to how it worked before I transfered all to the  EHD?  Help appreciated.

It sounds like you managed to corrupt the Library. The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents. If you can return those images to exactly the same location they were prior to moving the Library you may be able to fix it.
    Otherwise:
Try these in order - from best option on down...
    1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
    3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

  • I have iPhoto '08 (version 7.1.5). After copying my photos to an EHD my photos disappeared from iPhoto. Now when I open that library in iPhoto I can't access it. HELP!!

Following directions I found on the discussion groups, I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups which appeared after I connected my EHD. Went back to iPhoto to then trash the photos I didn't want on my IHD to free up space. There were no pictures. I have followed additional directions for accessing my library by opening iPhoto while holding down the option key. It then prompts me to choose a folder, I chose iPhoto Library 2 (as I named it) but my  iPhoto was still empty.
My intention was to keep one calendar year of photos on iPhoto while archiving the rest on my EHD. Can I do that? And, more importantly, how do I get my photos back!!
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you!

I moved (thought I was copying) my iPhoto library to an icon on my desktop Time Machine Backups
Do you mean that you moved your iPhoto Library package to the drive that housed your Time Machine backups? That is is the EHD you're referring to the one used for your Time Machine?
Are you running a "managed" or "referenced" library?
How many EHDs do you have? What are they used for?  You should not use the EHD that houses your Time Machine backups for any other purposes.

  • I have iphoto '08 version with an imac osx 10.5.8. It will not read my RAW files  from my Nikon D800 - a very new model. How can I get it to read my RAW files?

my somewhat old imac osx 10.5.8 with iphoto '08 will not read my RAW files from my new Nikon D800 camera - a new model on the market( 5 months or so). How can I get iphoto to read my RAW  files?

iPhoto 08 would not read RAW files from that new a camera. You need to upgrade so you can get more up-to-date version of OS X and iPhoto. Another possiblity is see if iPhoto 11 will run on 10.5.8, if so you should update. You can also attempt to run Software Update and see if it finds a newer release of iPhoto 08 that supports newer RAW formats.

  • I am trying to upgrade my iPhoto 09 version 8.1.2 to iPhoto 11 on my mac but i am confused

I currently have iPhoto '09 version 8.1.2 which was installed on my Macbook when I bought it. I have recently upgraded to OX Lion & want to upgrade to iPhoto '11 so I can use iCloud between my mac & iPhone but every time I click on the App in the App Store it keeps giving me a warning message: "iPhoto 8.1.2 is already installed and was not purchased from the Mac App Store - Do you want to buy iPhoto 9.2.3?"
I am worried that if I select BUY it will delete my current iPhoto programme & I will lose everything?
can anybody tell me what to do?

Back up your library and install it.
