I have iTunes on an external HD. Can I access it through my Time Capsule via USB connection?

To save space on my MacBook Pro, I've transferred iTunes to an external HD. Can I plug the external HD into the USB connection on my Time Capsule and thereby access my music, etc?

Is it possible to connect an external drive to the time capsule that I could use to store and access my primary iTunes files?

  • Can't access iPhone 4 under My Computer via usb connection outside of iTunes

I have an 8 GB iPhone 4, which replaced a 16GB one that fell from the docking station last Christmas and won't come back on. I have avoided syncing the new one with iTunes since getting it because I don't want to lose all of the pictures I had on the old one, but now I can no longer access my pictures through "My Computer" when I hook my phone up via USB. When I turned on iTunes (for the first time since August of last year apparently), it says "Would you like to set up this iPhone as a new phone or restore all of your information from a previous backup?" I don't want to do EITHER. I want to access my pictures WITHOUT using an extremely time consuming third party app or getting rid of any of the previous or new existing pictures and other media. I have over 1,500 pictures on my 8GB phone and it isn't functioning very well. I need to get these off and onto my computer, and I'm quickly losing my patience. Please help.

Log your iPhone and your computer into the iCloud.
All your pictures will be sent automaticly into your photo stream.
Then you can just pluck them out on your computer.

  • External HD connected to Time Capsule via USB, how can I back up this drive to Time Capsule?

I have my itunes media all on an external drive connected directly to Time Capsule via USB.
I plan to share this external drive over the network to share my media, but how can I back up this drive to the Time Capsule?

how can I back up this drive to the Time Capsule?
You will have to do this manually using the Finder, or try a commercial application like Chronosync or Carbon Copy Cloner which might be able to backup a network drive to another network drive. Check with their support folks first before you buy.
If you could connect the external drive directly to a Mac, Time Machine would backup both the Mac and the external hard drive (assuming that the external is formatted correcly to work with Time Machine).

  • Can i access my data on time capsule from some other network

can i access my data on time capsule from some other network that is my data at home from office over internet

There is plenty of info out there if you google..
Here is a summary I just put into another thread.
Remote access has been added back into iCloud that was in MobileMe..
Read the info on setting it up from cloud service.. BTMM.
    http://www.apple.com/support/icloud/back-to-my-mac/
If you want to do it without the cloud service, you have one major issue.. the public IP for WAN..
The internal IP of the TC.. which will default to 10.0.1.1 btw.. is irrelevant. It is the IP of the WAN which you use to access the TC over the internet. And here you have a problem.. the TC does not include dyndns service. So unless you have a static IP address from your ISP, this will cause you grief.
(If it is offered by your ISP.. get a static IP.. that eliminates all the issues.. and is far superior. Even dyndns service has issues if your public IP rotates too often. It is generally an extra cost item and requires a business account but some ISP offer it cheap or even free.. I joined an ISP that offered static ip for free because it gives me the ability to remote access my network without all the hassles you will see below.)
There are ways around it.. setting up your own domain for instance.
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
But it is easier to simply use a different router.. almost all of them have dyndns service available.. place the TC behind the router in bridge and forward port 548 TCP to it.
This is a bit old but still relevant.
    http://gigaom.com/apple/access-your-time-capsule-over-the-internet/
Note .. there is no ftp, http, ssh (there is actually but it isn't accessible), or any other service to allow connection other than AFP.. so you must use a Mac in remote location to access the TC.
The setup for the two methods is slightly different in the TC.. in the first instance, you need to turn on WAN access via disk sharing page in the manual setup.
In the second case you do not need this.
Remember security and put strong passwords on the disk. There are still security questions about this.
If security is important.. there is a third and better (IMO) method and that is vpn.. you will need to buy a vpn router as TC also missed out on that.. establish a vpn with the main router and that will allow you access to your network.. you will also then be able to use SMB remotely not just AFP.
Also if this office is a large company they should be running a firewall, which would block your access to home. You should check your IT admin people for what is allowed.. generally the only acceptable method is vpn otherwise you can drag viruses and trojans right into the network without the firewall catching them.

  • How can i get an xbox 360 to connect to my time capsule via WIRED connection?

I have a Time Capsule and i need to connect my xbox 360 to it because my stepdad has the network in this house set up crazily. He gets mad if i ask him to change anything because it is how he wants it and it works with EVERYTHING ELSE. I do not have a wireless adapter so i need to connect the xbox to my time capsule via a wired connection
    Thanks =]

Here is what I would look into.
Use iCloud and photo stream to upload pictures taken with the iPad.
Find a remote log in utility, or web based app to then remote to your computer.
Download the files from photo stream to your time capsule.
As far as recommending a remote log in utility. I have not experience in that area and would need to do research my self.

  • My Mac can access internet through my time capsule but can't find TC so I can set up time machine

I have an iMac and a MacBook.
I can access the internet with both Macs using my time capsule.
I can access the Time Capsule with my iMac and use it with Time Machine for backups.
I can't use my Time Capsule for Time Machine backup since my MacBook can't identify Time Capsule as a drive for this purpose.
Any suggestions on what I should do to have my MacBook recognize my Time Capsule for Time Machine use?
    thanks

So the TC does not show up as an available drive at all in the MBP.. what weird things happen??
Use finder, go, go to server, and use AFP://ipoftimecapsule.  (that being the IP address of the Time Capsule)
In router mode and at default it is 10.0.1.1 but check.
If it doesn't work tell us the IP of the TC .. and how it is setup, router or bridge.
IP of the mac that works, and IP of the MBP that doesn't work.
I am assuming you have done the more basic stuff.
    Pondini might help you.

  • Can't access some websites using time capsule

Everything has been working just fine with my time capsule and my imac and just today I couldn't access some websites for some reason. I tried many other sites including this one and can get to them no problem. I have been through all of the airport settings and trouble shooting and can't find any problems, also the other 2 computers and my blackberry can't access some of the same sites either, I am stumped. Does anyone out there have any idea whats going on? Thanks for your help!

    Welcome to the discussions!
Suggest that you contact your ISP. It sounds like their DNS server is overloaded at the moment, but also unlikely that they will ever admit it.
It wouldn't hurt to power cycle your complete network as well. Just power everything down, order is not important.
Start the modem first and let it run a few minutes by itself.
Then start the next device connected to the modem, probably your Time Capsule, and let it run a few minutes.
Then start your computers and devices one by one the same way.

  • Can't Access iphoto Library on Time Capsule

I can’t access one of my iphoto’s library on time capsule. I tried the permission keys- alt+cmd- fix and the Caution warning still pops up. All my libraries are working fine, but this particular one hasn’t allow me to enter the permissions fix window despite is set up as a default library- Your help much appreciate it. Thanks!

Have you opened this one over a wireless connection in the past?
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.

  • Can ipad access the file on time capsule

Can the files such as movies stored on time capsule be accessed and displayed by ipad

Of course, you need an app like "FileBrowser" or any other app that does the same.
Your movies need to have the mp4 format, or any other format the iPad can read.
wmv, avi, mpg, etc won't be compatible.
Then you have to know the IP address of the Time Capsule on your network to access it.

  • Can't find European land in Time Capsule setting

I have purchased TM from USA and can't find European land in Time Capsule setting.

Apple sells products that have been "regionalized" for different parts of the world.  North America, South America, Europe, Southeast Asia, etc, for example.
It is not possible to change a Time Capsule from one region to another. The reason for this is that different regions have different wireless standards and regulations. See this link for all the details:
List of WLAN channels - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Time Capsule purchased in the USA will operate from 100-240 Volts and 50/60 Hz automatically, so power wise, it will work just about anywhere in the world if you have the right kind of AC wall socket adapter. (A power transformer or converter is not needed).
But, you will have to be careful about using higher 5 GHz wireless channels on the USA Time Capsule while in Europe, since the use of higher 5 GHz channels is not legal in most European countries at this time.  In other words, keep the 5 GHz channel on the USA Time Capsule at Channel 36, 40, 44 or 48.

  • ITunes 10 how can I have iTunes recognise an external harddrive

iTunes 10 how can I have iTunes recognise an external harddrive, where all my music is already. I did the option, selecting extenal HD but some reason the iTunes does not alow me to select the .xml file (grayed out)

Use Migration Assistant in the Utitiies folder to return the deleted user account back to the machine, I don't know exactly how to go about this as I don't  use TimeMachine as it's so limiting, but Pondini can help
    http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
You might have to create the account with the same name, but I don't know if it will access the user files on the TM drive or not.
Once the account is back onto the machine you can log into it and transfer files between accounts on the same machine using the Finder > Go to Computer > Macintosh HD > Users > other account > Public > DropBox and drop files/folders in there, the permissions will change to the other user and the files/folders will be there when you log into the other user account.
Next time consider bootable clones, you can access them directly and even boot directly from them, update them when your ready and make as many as you need, create clones from clones even.

  • Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partition?

Using an external drive with shared files (iPhoto, iTunes), attached to a Time Capsule, can the contents of the external drive be backed-up to the internal Time Capsule drive? Perhaps a RAID1 mirror to a partitioned Time Capsule? I understand that the Time Machine (software) cannot backup a networked drive (the external) and that Time Capsule (the router/wireless hard drive) does not have its own backup software... so it won't backup the connected drive. What I would like is an alternate solution for having an automated backup of a networked drive. A 2TB Time Capsule has more than enough space for Time Machine backups of my family of Macbooks, so I had hoped to mirror a 500GB external drive (with shared media files) to a portion of the Time Capsule internal hard drive. I assume this would require a partition of the Time Capsule drive. If not, would the sparse file from the various computers being backed up need to be copied to the external drive as part of the RAID1 setup? This seems like overkill for the Time Machine backup, but it would cover the media files.

The complexity with this idea is the software has to run from a Mac computer on your network.. so you need a Mac turned on, probably most of the day.
It isn't possible to partition the TC although you can create a image area.
The software would have to copy the material, that means all files to be copied, go from USB drive, back to the Mac, then back to the TC, and written to the drive. In other words you have just added Network congestion, although a proper incremental backup type software will not actually use a lot of capacity.
Finally it will be slow.. network drives are slower than internal drives. Well USB connected drive is much slower than the same drive connected directly to the computer.. and if the drive is connected directly to a computer it can be shared with the network.
    http://www.anandtech.com/show/4577/airport-extreme-5th-gen-and-time-capsule-4th- gen-review-faster-wifi-/4
Read carefully the speed of the USB drive plugged into the TC.

  • When I plug in my ipad it automatically tries to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

When I plug in my ipad it automatically tires to back up and download all the contents to the C drive - the PC is too full and I have iTunes on an external hard drive, how do I tell the system to do the backup to the hard drive please?

You can open a command prompt by hitting the start button and typing CMD<Enter> in the search box that opens up.
To move the current backup folder from C: to D: type in this command and press <Enter>
    Move "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
Where <User> is your Windows user name.
To make iTunes look for the data in the new location type in this command and press <Enter>
    MkLink /J "C:\Users\<User>\AppData\Local\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup" "D:\Backup"
If your external drive has a different letter or you already have a folder called "Backup" then edit "D:\Backup" accordingly in both commands.

  • I have a new computer and I can't access my Itunes account.  The message says that I am allowed to have only 5 authorized computers on this account.  I do not have 5 authorized computers on my account.  What can I do?

I have a new computer and I can't access my Itunes account.  The message says I can't have more than 5 computers on this account and I don't.  What can I do?

First of all you should really post this in Itunes forums cause you might get more hits on it.. Anyway.. You can only authorize up to 5 comps on one itunes account.. This does not include iOS devices. Those you can have 10.
So to fix this issue, open itunes, hit store on the left side, click log in (or your e-mail address if you are already logged in) in the top right hard corner of the page. One you log into your account you will see a a little area where it says you authorized 5 out of 5 comps. Below it should be a button to clear all those out.  Itunes will de-authorize all computers on the account then you need to go back Store tab in the menu bar and select authorize this computer.
Remember it will deauthorize all your computers, so you need to re-authorize any other computers you have.
