I have just fixed my screen flicker (Software only)

First of all, please note the below procedure is to be tried at your own risk.
The basic idea is to add a custom refresh rate to the system (70Hz Vertical) and use it instead of the default one (60Hz).
What was my flicker like:
Continuous, felt like watching and old TV (European, 60Hz) and feeling the ripples. I had no sudden changes of backlight intensity, and the flicker became obvious when using a matte background image, usually grey or blue.
What I had done:
While searching for any clues on how to check/modify the display refresh rates, I found a thread (really sorry for not putting the link ... forgot it) where the poster recommended a small program (SwitchResX Control) to create a poll of faulty LCD manufacturers. I have downloaded the software and finally I managed to fix my flicker
Step 1:
Get the program at http://www.madrau.com/switchres/SwitchResXControl.zip. You should use the native resolution for the MacBook (1280x800).
Step 2:
In the program, go to the Custom tab. Press the + sign to create a custom setting. In the 'Timing Parameters' window, after making sure all the parameters are the same as the normal 1280x800 setting, set the vertical scan rate at 70. Also, check the 'Positive synch' check-box. Save everything and reboot.
Step 3:
Open System Preferences, then Displays. Now you should have the Refresh Rate drop-down option enabled (should be 60). Select the 70 setting. Save and reboot.
Step 4:
You should have a flicker-free display now.
Feel free to check http://www.iedutu.net/macbook for pics taken during setup and settings from my machine.
Please remember:
0. If anything goes wrong, select Factory Settings, save and reboot.
1. This thing worked fine for me. It might not work for you. If you have done all steps and still have a flicker, you might have a genuine hardware problem. Like I mentioned before, I did not have an extreme type of flicker, nor a random one.
2. This should be tried at your own risk. I think setting a different refresh rate cannot damage your hardware, but I'm not a hardware guy, therefore I hope nothing will go wrong with my MacBook too .
Have fun!
Cristian

I looked over a number of mac forums and I can say that there are two separate flicker problems:
1. Continuous flicker, obvious on a blue/gray wallpaper when dimming the brightness. Flicker not visible on full brightness, growing while dimming the display. At 50% brightness the display is very usable, flicker visible only if you are actually looking for it. My take this is a software problem (found few people saying the flicker is gone in Windows XP in bootcamp, but present in OSX).
2. Random flicker, ranging from almost visible to flashing screen. Comes at random times, with or without the power adapter plugged in. Can appear in all sorts of combinations/situations. I do not want to assume anything here, but I feel this is a hardware problem based on the YouTube clips I saw.
My case was the first one, thank God and hopefully it will stay like this, although I saw MacBooks on display with no flicker whatsoever.
On the second case, I think a trip to an Apple Service Center would fix it. Unfortunately there is no known faulty module that changed is fixing the problem for everyone with the random/continuous flicker. Everything from logic boards to invertors to displays were changed with mixed results. But it seems the invertor is being changed in most cases and most people are happy with the result.
My 2c.
Have a nice day!
Cristian.

IF RESET DOESN'T WORK, FORCE IPAD INTO RECOVERY MODE
    1. Turn off iPad
    2. Turn on computer and launch iTunes (make sure you have the latest version of iTune)
    3. Plug USB cable into computer's USB port
    4. Hold Home button down and plug the other end of cable into docking port. Do not release button until you see picture of iTunes and plug (very important)
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note: Data will be lost

I hope that you can see this response. The forum software is acting quite bizarre today.
You really do want to restore with your own computer. There is an off chance that you might be able to backup first, but I really think it is a very slight chance now since you got the connect to iTunes screen. But on the chance that when you connect, it sees the iPad and allows a backup, I would to not have you wait to use your own Mac.
If you cannot create a backup, you will lose everything that you have put on since the date to the last backup. So of your last backup was three weeks ago, you will restore the iPad to the condition that it was in three weeks ago.
If you do a lot of traveling, using iCloud for backups might be a very good idea. I use iTunes primarily and I backup my MacBook Pro with Time Capsule, but I still use iCloud as a secondary backup. I don't have enough data that I have exceeded the free 5 GB that you get with iCloud, so I do use it just in case.
I can't explain what happened with the update, I can only tell you that it does happen to other users. I have never had a problem when I updated and I having been updating over WiFi since iOS 5 came out. Taking a guess, maybe an interruption in the connection - especially of you tried updating using a hotel's WiFi network, or a power surge maybe. Whatever the cause, it is most likely a one time thing. That doesn't help your situation I know, but hopefully it won't happen again.

  • I have just put a screen protector on my iphone 4 and where there was something on the film it seems to have eaten into the screen. is there a way to clean these marks off

    Help,
i have just put a screen protector on my iphone 4 and where there was something on the film it seems to have eaten into the screen. is there a way to clean these marks off?

I wouldn't worry.  Assuming you haven't hacked the phone you cannot have installed any viruses or spyware just by clicking a link in an email.  Sounds like the page you accessed could not be read on the phone anyway, or it was just a dead link.

  • Will Apple replace my Iphone 5 with a cracked screen under applecare , or just fix the screen.

Hi, I cracked my iphone 5 and I am planning on taking it to the genius bar. I have heard apple is now fixing the screen instead of just giving you a knew phone. I am also wondering how much I would be charged. Will I have to restore my phone or anything or do they not even turn on my phone. Thank You!

As with any warranty on any product, damage is not covered.
It has nothing at all to do with the fact that they no longer sell iphone 5.  They will have planty of service units for quite some time. The warranty simply does not cover damage.

  • I have just synced my iphone4 it has only synced part of my music not all of it saying they can't be found although they are in my library

i have just synced my iphone4 but it has only synced part vof my library saying it cant find songs.

You can turn off in-app purchases on the iPad via Settings > General > Restrictions > In-App Purchases 'off' - depending upon the iOS version on the iPad you might also have a Require Password setting on the Restrictions screen which you can set to 'Immediately'
There is a copy of the iPad manual here, which you can download : http://support.apple.com/manuals/ipad/
And more info about restrictions : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4213

  • I have just downloaded Elements 11 & there is only one frame (basic) in collage, how do I get more?

I have just upgraded from Elements 7 to Elements 11 but find in the photo Collage there is only one frame, how do I get more, my old 7 had a good variety???

    Hi Wobygong5,
I am afraid PSE11 has just one theme, ie. Basic.
However you can go to Expert mode, and then create a new image of the size you want, and then insert frames from the Graphics panel. You can insert as many frames as you want.
But Photo Collage will offer you just one theme.

  • I just upgraded my mac desk top as i was asked i have just a blank  screen now

i upgraded my desktop Mac and it just stopped working now it has a blank screen with a file flashing

"iOS" as shown in your profile cannot run on Mac computers, just Apple mobile devices. What OS level were you at before the update and what update did yo utry to apply?

  • I have just updated to iOs 5 software and have lost all my contacts! apps etc have restored but no numbers! please help!

i updated my phone and have lost all my contacts i have restored and all my apps are back but no contacts! help!

What application were you syncing your contact to before you updated? Check the settings on the info tab and sync them back.
If you were NOT syncing them to an application (Outlook or Windows Address Book on a PC, Address Book on a Mac), you can try forcing a restore from your backup again. If they don't come back, they are most likely gone.

  • I have just updated my IPhone 3Gs software to newest one, but on the set-up it is saying there isn't a sim in the phone??

It keeps saying my iphone cannot be activated because there is no sim, which there is??

I followed the thread and used the link provided to download iTunes version 10.6.3 (again). The same error message keeps coming up, telling me that I do not have it installed. I tried restarting the computer following the install, but it still won´t acknowledge that 10.6.3 is installed. Any other solutions?

  • HT4623 Hi I have just updated ipad to latest software and since then I can't get any sound from speakers only ear socket or FaceTime works fine any ideas thanks Mark

NO sound from speakers after update only headphone jack works, speakers work on FaceTime
    many thanks Mark

Reboot the iPad and see if that helps.
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • I have a 5C, the screen broken it only shows the backlight. Problem is its locked in airplane mode any ideas on how to get it out?

Phone is locked in Airplane mode, Is there a way to get it out without having to use the touch screen because it is broken.

No. That is a software switch, and could only be activated/deactivated from the screen. I suggest you make an appointment at the Genius Bar of the nearest Apple store to see about getting the device repaired. Many of the Apple Stores are now equipped to repair/replace screens in house. I had one replaced today for my daughter's iPhone 5c in the US and the cost was $129.00 plus tax.

  • All of a sudden, when syncing with iTunes 12, almost all my capacity in my phone is taken by "Other". Used to have just over 10GB of music, now only room for 3.

16 GB iPhone 5. Used to hold about 20 apps and I could load 10GB of music. Today, I was syncing and only had space for 3GB of music. Over 8GB is being used by "Other". Anybody know what "Other" is and how to get rid of it?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Seraphiel07.
I have a very similar issue. Hardware involved:
Apple MacMini (Mid 2011) - OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple TV (3rd Generation). Home Sharing (access) enabled.
Apple MacBook Pro (15" Mid-2009). OSX 10.8.2. iTunes 10.7. Home Sharing enabled.
Apple iPad 2 (Wifi only). iOS 6
    Apple iPhone 4S. iOS 6
    All connected through:
Apple Time Capsule 8.0211n (4th Gen)
I have an iTunes library on the MacBook Pro, shared over "Home Sharing" and another (duplicate content, different library name) iTunes library on my MacMini, which is also accessed through the Apple TV.
All software is current (as of Sep 26th).
All movies are iTunes purchases. 80 in total.
All files are purchased (and home shared) under one account.
My last two iTunes purchases both HD movies on 09/17/2012 and 09/05/2012 refuse to appear on any device accessing either of the two Libraries over Home Sharing. It should be noted that every other movie (the other 78) all show up and play correctly. I therefore know it is not an issue with connectivity, otherwise I would see zero movies available.
    I have:
    1. Removed all content from each Library and re-added
    2. Upgraded the OS on the MacMini 10.8.2
    3. Tested viewing the two missing movies on other Apple devices and no luck.
    4. Turn home sharing on and off within iTunes and also on each device.
It would appear to me that the issue is with the files themselves, rather than the devices as different devices and different versions have been tested.
    All comments welcome.

  • Did the MBP software update 1.0 fix screen flicker?

    the title says it all.
I have been waiting to get my MBP until apple fixes the screen flicker. is now the time for me to buy!!!???!!!
    thanks,
    a

Yes. My flicker was most noticeable when i was using dashboard and had a white background for my desktop on any setting less than full brightness. After the update the problem is gone as I type this at a low brightness setting. I think the Nvidia card was not optimized for LED back lighting.
