I have just purchased and installed a new Airport extreme base station but now the Airport Utility cannot see my old Airport Express. Are their compatibility issues and do I need to purchase a new Express?

When you can, take a look at the old AirPort Express and locate the model number in the faint print on the side of the device.
If you see A1084 or A1088, this is an older Express version that is no longer supported by the current version of AirPort Utility that you are using with the new AirPort Extreme.
If that is the case, your Express is at least 6 years old...probably older...so it is about time to treat yourself to a new version with much faster speeds and more features.

I tried registering my new Airport Extreme Base Station, but the following statement keeps coming up:

I'm sorry, but I don't believe Apple provides support via email, only call-in or directly by visiting the Apple Stores or Apple-Authorized Dealers.

Yes, you can extend the older 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with the newer 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn). To do so, they would both need to be reconfigured for a Wireless Distribution System (WDS).

You would need either an AirPort Extreme or an AirPort Express connected to the Cisco router, with a permanent Ethernet cable connection.
Configure the Extreme or Express that is connected to the Cisco router to "create a wireless network".
Then, you could add an AirPort Express to "extend a wireless network" to provide more wireless coverage for the network that the Extreme or Express would be creating.
Remember that the Express can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives, so it must be located where it can receive a strong signal from the "main" AirPort.
If you don't need the Cisco wireless signal, you could turn it off.....or use that network for guests or something similar.
The bottom line here......you always need two Apple routers if you want to extend the network wirelessly.

Why does the new Dual-Band AirPort Extreme Base Station act as a proxy?

has been archived and nothing came of it, but after testing, I'm certain that their findings are true.
The Dual-Band AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) with firmware 7.4.1 acts as a proxy for TCP ports 21, 554, and 7070 when NAT is turned on. This can be verified by using Nmap on any external server known to NOT have the ports open and having Nmap return that the ports are open. You can telnet to these ports to verify that they're "open," even though they are not on the server.
This functionality appears to be undocumented and as far as I can tell, the only way to turn it off is to put the AEBS into bridge mode and having some other device do NAT further upstream.
As a computer professional, this functionality extremely undesirable, particularly since it is not documented and doesn't have an "off switch." I wasted a bunch of time with one of my network engineers because of this, thinking that some network router was spoofing our server. I also wasted a bunch of my time trying to detect whatever "stealthy rootkit" had opened a FTP server and some other botnet related ports on our server, when in reality, it was simply my AEBS tricking me.
Disabling NAT-PMP ("Enable NAT port mapping protocol") does not affect this.
Is it too much to ask to have a checkbox in the "Advanced" section of the AirPort Utility to turn this feature off?

Please help me connect eMac, cable modem, and Airport Extreme Base Station

I connected Ethernet cord from cable modem to Airport Extreme Base Station and then another Ethernet cord from Airport Extreme Base Station to eMac, but I could not get internet access on my eMac that way. I'm only getting internet access by directly connecting eMac to cable modem. Can someone please help me with a step by step explanation of how to set these 3 machines up so that I can have internet access on both my eMac and, wirelessly, on my new MacBook. Ensure that you power off the cable modem for a minute or so when you switch it to another Ethernet device.
Ensure that you are connecting the WAN port of the AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to the cable modem. The eMac should connect to the LAN port.
The steps for setting this up can be found in the "Designing AirPort Networks" (direct PDF link) document. Look through that document and try to get it setup. Then return here if you have more questions. Don't forget to post what you tried and the issues you encountered.

Airport Extreme Base Station and Playstation 3 with MediaHome

I have tried setting up Nero 8 MediaHome with my ps3 and my dell with apple airport extreme. The playstation sees the media server but the files are empty. I think it has something to do with the airport not being able to so uPnP. Has anyone got this to work?
All the support I have found is for mac os x or for a diff router. I have been trying to get this to work forever and it always shows blank folders. I have also tried TVersity Media Server and the same thing happens. Please Help!

My experience with TalkTalk -
My original TalkTalk set-up was using a Netgear DG834G (in modem/router mode), this provided a very stable direct broadband connection but the wireless distribution around my house was weak.
Initially I tried to extend the wireless distribution by adding a Netgear RangeMax WPN824, and although I got a much better wireless signal I started to observe frequent dropping of the broadband connection. In the end I gave up and decided to go the Apple way and use the Extreme Base Station.
Now the Extreme Base Station is connected via the DG834G (operating in modem only mode).
The Extreme Base Station works well and is a joy to set up (of course) and is being used as WDS together with an Airport Express that I also have.
This works well, most of the time, but I still get frequent dropping of the broadband connection.
I think that this is more likely to be the Netgear modem and/or phone line than the Apple Base Station - but frustratingly I still haven't got to the bottom of the problem yet.

have i wasted money on purchase of NEW Airport Extreme base station? i have fios with actiontec router and tv service. the Guest network does not work nor does Actiontec have ability to provide guest network. I am about to return the AEBS as I dont see any reason to keep it other than the 2.4 and 5GHZ network ability. Oh yeah, the 802.11 ac too.

Find a way to disable DHCP on your Actiontec router, making it a modem. Call Verizon and ask them for instructions: "I have my own router, and want to disable the Actiontec's router. How do I do that?"

The AirPort Extreme can be configured as a bridge, i.e. not performing any router function, but you will be losing most of its advantages by doing so.

Just spoke with Cisco about the router. They said the router is compatible with the E1500. They suggested that I contact Apple to see if their default IP address was that same as the router (192.168.1.1). They told me I would have to change it if that was the case. How would I do that?

Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
My theories:
- true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
- The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
QUESTIONS:
- Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
- I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
Rule out:
- wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)

If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
versa.

Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?

Recovering Old Datas on New Drive + Setting Airport Extreme Base Station old and new ones

Situation:
-iMac 24" Alu/2008/2.8 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo/ 2Go DDR2 SDRAM
-2 Airport Extreme Base Stations mushroom type,
-1 Airport Extreme Capsule Model: A1143
The original 320 Go Hard Drive of my iMac crashed few months ago. A "technician" installed a new Hard Drive 235 Go while trying to recover all datas from old one. Failed.
No back up. The old disc needs to be unlocked in a dustless atmosphere. Quite expensive at the moment.
I decided to install OS X from sratch with the original Install Disc delivered with my iMac.
OS X is 10.5
Once on line I updated all pre-installed softwares. Among which Aiport Utility 5.6.1 today.
Problem:
I would like to get bigger hard drive disc, 1To for example. Does this still exist for this iMac 2008 Alu ?
How can I do to get my iMac again to OS X 10.9 ?. Does this mean I need to buy all intermediate levels again ?
How do I get my softwares (the ones on the original Disc: Pack office, Pages, Numbers, etc ...) back on track again, since my iMac is now more like down to factory level ?
Extending my internet provider from the WiFi router via my 3 Airport Extreme Base Stations: 2 mushroom type that need OS X + Airport Utility softwares at a certain level, while the Capsule might need another level. Right now I tried to set up the 3 of them with this Aiport Utility and though they all recognize the provider network, I can never conclude to extend it with the Base Stations: it drops the case. (WDS trouble which I don't even know what it is, or the Base Station simply desapears from Airport Utility scan, ...)

AirPort, older AirPort Extreme Base Station, AirPort Express, Newer AirPort Extreme Base Station

This may sound like a fairly dumb question, but here goes anyway:
I have a 27" iMac with the following AirPort Extreme card:
Card Type: AirPort Extreme (0x168C, 0x8F)
Firmware Version: Atheros 9280: 2.1.14.6
For a Base Station, I'm currently using a pretty long-in-the-tooth M8799LL/A AirPort Extreme Base Station (with modem and antenna port)
I recently bought an Airport Express:
AirPort Express MB321LL/A (A1264) to
A. Use AirTunes to send iTunes from my Man Cave on the first floor at one end of the house to the family room on the first floor at the other, where it will connect to an A/V setup, and, probably, one of my USB printers
B. Act as a repeater for the AirPort Extreme Base Station, which is physically closer to the Man Cave than to the family room. My wife and I use our ancient-but-hangin'-in-there iBook G4s in the family room (and upstairs) to check email, eBay, etc. Both in the family room and especially upstairs, we sometimes get only 2-3 bars on the AirPort signal strength indicator in the menu bar.
I see that I can get, from a well-known third-party retailer, an AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 (1st Generation), for an exceptionally reasonable price.
My question is, what would getting the AirPort Extreme 802.11n A1143 do for me, if anything? I know it would give me one more signal source in the repeater chain, and I could probably put the Auld Nyle M8799LL/A in the stairway or upstairs to boost the signal upstairs, and I could use the USB port in the AirPort Extreme A1143 for connecting another USB printer or USB external hard drive (would this drive be available to any Mac on the AirPort network?)
Any other configuration possibilities and suggestions greatly appreciated!

Thank you for the prompt reply and the very helpful links. I'm going through all the support docs right now, but from your explanation and what I've seen in the support docs so far, it would appear that the maximum bandwidth is achieved by a physically-connected "Roaming Network."
I'm so out of it, I'm afraid I'd never heard of "Powerline adapters," but I looked them up, and I guess this is the system that uses "Romex" - style standard house wiring to carry signal, which cuts down on each individual Base Station's power overhead (does it also affect bandwidth?).
I see a lot of names selling these adapters -- Western, D-Link, NETGEAR, ZyXEL, Monster, Sling Media, PowerNet, Cisco-Linksys, Actiontec, Medialink, Rosewill, TRENDnet -- and a lot of different configurations: 1 port, 2 ports, 4 ports. Basically I have one 27" iMac that doesn't go anywhere (it's not too portable!), a couple iBook G4s, and a point where I want to run 1/8" mini-jack-to-RCA L/R audio cable from the AirPort Express to an A/V receiver. I doubt this configuration is going to change, as I'm 63, and too lazy to lug stuff around if I don't have to. What do you think would be the best solution for me, considering I just ordered the AEBSn and I already have a brand-new AXn. Should the 27" iMac, since it ain't movin', be connected by ethernet/"Powerline adapter", rather than relying on the internal Airport Extreme card? I guess what I'm asking is, given what I want to do, how many of these Powerline adapters, what kind (do you recommend), with how many ethernet ports do I need?

New Mac and Airport Extreme Base Station User - Setup question

I just received my new MacBook Pro yesterday along with the Airport Extreme Base Station. I was tying to setup the airport extreme but have had no luck. I want to make sure I'm connecting things correctly - make sure I'm not doing something stupid.
I have a cable modem and I previously had a Netgear router. The connection from the cable modem that had previously been connected to my Netgear router - I disconnected it and connected it to the Airport extreme base station instead. And then I plugged it in. Is that all the connecting that I need to do? I get the flashing amber light.
Now I did read a few other threads and it sounds like I may need to install the Airport Utility that came with the base station. So I'll try that when I get home tonight. But I would appreciate any other suggestions - especially whether or not I've connected the airport extreme correctly to my cable modem.

I want to make sure I'm connecting things correctly
The network configuration should look something like the following:
Cable modem > (Ethernet cable) > [WAN port] AEBSn > (wireless) > MacBook Pro

Since you changed your network configuration, you should perform a complete power recycle of your network components to allow enough time for them to "synchronize."
Modem/Router Power ReCycling
- Power-off the Cable modem, AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), & computer(s). (Wait at least 30 minutes. If possible, leave the modem off overnight.)
- Power-on the Cable modem; Wait at least 30 minutes.
- Power-on the AEBSn; Wait at least 5 minutes.
- Power-on the computer(s)
Now I did read a few other threads and it sounds like I may need to install the Airport Utility that came with the base station.
Yes, you will need this utility to perform the setup and follow-on administration of the AEBSn.

Apple does not specify a model number in their product information, but it is A1392 in the U.S. I do not know if Apple uses different model numbers in other countries.

New 10.3.9 install on Pismo G3, Airport Extreme Base Station Error Network

My 10.3.9 Pismo laptop G3 with built in firewire ports worked perfect on my Airport Extreme Base Station — I just Erased and reinstalled 10.3.9 (it was working before I Erased this morning) and now my Original Airport card can't join my wireless network:

I zapped Pram, reset power manager successfully (date reverted).
I accessed the AEBS by a 10.6.3 Mac Pro and checked the Equivalent Password "WPA Password: ####PW###"
Radio Mode selected: 80211n (80211b/g compatible).
APBS version current: 7.4.2
G3 sees my network as expected.
The APEBS hasn't changed (except for the recent update).
I restarted the AEBS.
Still get the error...HELP!
I saw the exact problem on several archived threads, but no one gave a solution or explained the problem (and I'm going blind here).
Again, for the past two years it was working fine with 10.3.9, it broke this morning after I erased and reinstalled 10.3.9.
10.3.9 is the only software loaded on this laptop.

If you just bought it I would recommend calling Apple, they can help you set it up.
Also you should consider getting a high speed Internet connection. They are very inexpensive these days and would make your Internet experience much more enjoyable. Where you live I would think you have a choice of DSL (available from most telephone companies) or Cable, which would be the quickest but also more money too.
