I have left Windows for good! Hello beautiful MacBook Pro
Hello everyone. Well after selling my Apple G4 "chees grater" tower and moving back to Windows a little more than a year ago I am now back with Apple and STAYING with Apple. I got so sick of taking every single precaution to prevent spyware, malware, etc from slowing down and infecting my computer. It got to the point where I was running like 3-4 programs to get all the junk off my computer. And even then it would completely rid my system. Especially this **** Web-Nexus thing! Anyway...
I just placed my order for my new MacBook Pro which I am very excited to recieve. Anyway I had a few questions and I was not sure where else to post this so I figured I would do so here.
I have a lot of music on my computer. That is really what I am most concerened about. I have burned all my word docs, files, etc onto CD's but as for my music (since there is so much) I dont know what to do. I dont have an external HD so that is out. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!
Do you have an iPod (especially a 30 or 60G)? If you do you can use it to transfer your music. You can either use it as an external drive or you can get a program that allows you to transfer the tunes. The iPod is set up to only download tunes, so you need the other program to upload from the iPod. I have seen more than one that will do it.
Also, with an ethernet cable you can connect the computers together. You put the PC in network mode and access it through the MacBook. I think you can also do this with a Firwire cable.
Don't despair. You can get the music moved over.

I am running OSX 10.8.3,when i try to open iDVD i get the initial screen but when i try to choose an option all i get is 'Downloading Themes' which just continues. I have left it for over an hour?
Where did you get iDVD to put on your Mac? The downloading themes are no longer available from Apple. If you copied it from a Mac that had all the themes look for the iDVD folder on that Mac which should be in the HD/Library/Applications Support folder or the Users/Home/Library/Applications Support folder. Copy it to the HD/Library/Applications Support folder for Mt Lion.
If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides themes from iDVD 5-7. The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.
Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 to iDVD 7.1.2 via the updaters at the Apple Downloads webpage.

I left my headphones into my new macbook pro and now there is no volume through headphones or without. I have tried to reset the audio port and it is not on mute. Any ideas?
Go step by step and test.
1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
Highlight Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure that Mute is not enabled.
2.Plug in and remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
3. Reset PRAM. http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
4. Reset SMC. http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
5. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup

Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it. -

You could just try changing your Input Sources under System Preferences>Language & Text:
But I kind of doubt that's going to work. It may be a hardware problem or a system problem. If you take it into Apple they might be able to determine which and might advise a reinstallation of System software. I would take it to an Apple Store or an AASP but, first, make sure that you have a backup just in case they suggest a clean install of the system.

That is determined by what type of disk that it is. It may be a disk that only allows you to install Windows on your Dell computer and would not allow Windows to be installed on a Boot Camp partitition or as a virtual machine in an app such as VirtualBox on your Mac. If that is the case, you would need to purchase a retail Windows install disk. -

I have a very old (by computer standards) MacBook Pro, and a newer one. I've been using the old one mostly for iTunes, into which I have only CD entries. For a long time, years, the old MacBook pro ceased entering the song titles. This is very time consuming for me, so I finally investigated a bit further.
I discovered how to enter the track titles onto my newer MacBook Pro, and was so pleased! But when I tried to do the same with the other laptop, it failed.
What I did, basically, was what the Apple Help suggested--choose iTunes General Preferences, etc.etc. And yes, I did upgrade the old laptop to the newest iTunes version.
Am I just wasting my time here? Is there some reason why an older Mac Pro will not do what the newer one will, with regard to iTunes?
My older laptop is a 2.6 GHz Core Duo; it has 36 GB of "memory available." The newer one a 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7. It has 284 GB of memory available.

Is it possible for itunes on my MacBook Pro to play songs off my networked Western Drive external hard drive so I can sync to my Mac to my iPhone? I do not want to keep any music on my laptop and I don't want to pay $25 to itunes match a year to access my songs if I don't have to.

Thank you for replying. I've been looking at your posts about setting up iTunes using an external drive. A bit of background info. My old computer broke down, so I got a new one from work. I've always kept my music files on my external drive (I have around 170GB of music). I didn't follow the suggestions in the "migrate iTunes library" post because my old computer died on me. However, I've looked at your posts about lay out of the iTunes folders. Before connecting to iTunes on the new computer, I had reorganized my iTunes folder on my E: external drive, and created an iTunes folder which contains an iTunes Media subfolder. The music files are in a Music folder, which is in the iTunes Media folder. I've also put the following files in my iTunes folder: iTunes Library.itl, iTunes Library Extras.itdb, iTunes Library Genius.itdb, iTunes Music Library.xml, as well as sentinel. I then followed the advice you gave bmw99 on 2 Nov 2013 at 9.58 (sorry, can't copy the exact answer).
Just to clarify: I'd like to keep all my music media on the E: external hard drive (the computer hard drive is too small), and I'm aware i might never have my playlists back, and that all the songs in my library might be ticked. However, I don't want my library to be duplicated.
I'm at work at the moment, but will be back home in about 10 hours, so I can be more specific about folders / files names.

Have just installed Mavericks and restarted the MacBook Pro. That was 3 hours ago and after logging in, I got my wallpaper and dock, but none of my desktop icons, just the spinning coloured wheel. It's been like that for 2 hours. Is this normal? What should I do, please?
I tried holding the on/off switch down to make it shut down, but when I turned it back on again, the same thing happened and none of the keys etc makes any difference.
HELP!!!! Please.No, what you're experiencing is not normal.
Try booting whilst holding down the Shift key - this will allow you to boot into Safe Mode, disabling third-party kernel extensions, etc. Your Mac will be slow to boot and will operate sluggishly. That's normal. If you can get in using Safe Mode then you have some start-up item that doesn't play well with Mavericks.

THANKS FOR YOUR REPLY, I DOWNLOADED HANDBRAKE BUT WOULDN'T LET ME USE IT BECAUSE I DIDN'T HAVE VLC WHICH I DID. WHEN I FINALLY GOT HANDBRAKE TO WORK I SELECTED THE DVD FOR SOURCE AND IT STARTED SCANNING. A HALF HOUR LATER IT SAID NOT RECOGNISE SOURCE. TAKE IT IS ENCRYPTED.

1) Copy all music files to a thumb drive / external hard drive.
2) Open iTunes on your MacBook Pro (congrats!)
3) Under the File Menu, select "Add to Library." Navigate to the folder with your music in it and click "Open." Bam! Music.
