I have lines going on my screen, when i went into the apple store the guy at the genius bar was clueless as to the problem. i havent dropped it. help?

hello, i have a line growing on my screen that is getting worse. it looks like a centipede. i have been to the apple store and the guy i spoke to had no idea what was causing it. the phone still works but i am concerned that it is getting bigger. any help?

OK. so it's not dead pixels.  How old is the phone? (some carriers will allow an upgrade more frequently than once a year... if it's less than a year old, the genius should have just replaced it for you, so I'm guessing it's not under warranty any more. I know the out of warranty price for an iPhone 4 is $199. Don't know if that applies to the 3Gs as well off hand.
A quick google search looks like you can get the parts and replace the display assembly or have it repaired for you (which I would think would be the smarter option) for between $50 and $100.
I know NOTHING about the company this link leads to, but the price seems reasonable... Do your homework first. If it gets to the point where it's unacceptable to you, I'd check into it. http://www.iphone3gscreenrepair.com/product_info.php?products_id=108

Try turning off the Firewall in System Preferences > Security (or Security & Privacy) > Firewall
Disable anti virus software if you have that installed before downloading media from the App Store.
When you post for help, please tell us which Mac OS X you have installed. Thanks !

Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price, which pays for an exchange at a discounted price off the full retail sales price.

  • I have had my iphone 4 for three weeks and love it however yesterday I noticed a small chip on the screen, devastated! Took it to apple store and arranged appointment with genius, he said I have to pay £139  for a cosmetic fault, I have not dropped it!

I keep it in a leather case,  and have never let it come into contact with anything,

There's not much anyone here can offer, since none of us work for Apple and have no power to intervene in this issue. The Apple technician can only go by what he or she sees, not by what you claim since not everyone is honest about what has happened. In addition, Apple's warranty does not cover defects that are strictly cosmetic:
    This warranty does not apply: (a) [removed for brevity]; (b) to cosmetic damage, including but not limited to scratches, dents, and broken plastic on ports;
You can try pleading your case with the manager of the store, or with Apple Customer Relations (call Apple tech support and ask to speak with a customer relations agent), but they may not be able to do anything to help you.
    Good luck, and regards.

The first thing to do with a second-hand computer is to erase the internal drive and install a clean copy of OS X. You—not the original owner—must do that. How you do it depends on the model, and on whether you already own another Mac. If you're not sure of the model, enter the serial number on this page. Then find the model on this page to see what OS version was originally installed.
It is not safe to use a computer with software installed by a previous owner.
1a. If you don't own another Mac
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.4 or 10.5, you need a boxed and shrink-wrapped retail Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6) installation disc from the Apple Store or a reputable reseller—not from eBay or anything of the kind. If the machine has less than 1 GB of memory, you'll need to add more in order to install 10.6. Preferably, install as much memory as it can take, according to the technical specifications.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.6, you need the installation media that came with it: gray installation discs, or a USB flash drive for a MacBook Air. You should have received those media from the original owner, but if you didn't, order replacements from Apple. A retail disc, or the gray discs from another model, will not work.
To start up from an optical disc or a flash drive, insert it, then restart the computer and hold down the C key at the startup chime. Release the key when you see the gray Apple logo on the screen.
If the machine shipped with OS X 10.7 or later, you don't need media. It should start up in Internet Recovery mode when you hold down the key combination option-command-R at the startup chime. Release the keys when you see a spinning globe.
Some models shipped with OS X 10.6 and received a firmware update after 10.7 was released, enabling them to use Internet Recovery. If you have one of those models, you may not be able to reinstall 10.6 even from the original discs, and Internet Recovery may not work either without the original owner's Apple ID. In that case, contact Apple Support, or take the machine to an Apple Store or another authorized service provider to have the OS installed.
1b. If you do own another Mac
If you already own another Mac that was upgraded in the App Store to the version of OS X that you want to install, and if the new Mac is compatible with it, then you can install it. Use Recovery Disk Assistant to prepare a USB device, then start up the new Mac from it by holding down the C key at the startup chime. Alternatively, if you have a Time Machine backup of OS X 10.7.3 or later on an external hard drive (not a Time Capsule or other network device), you can start from that by holding down the option key and selecting it from the row of icons that appears. Note that if your other Mac was never upgraded in the App Store, you can't use this method.
    2. Partition and install OS X
If you see a lock screen when trying to start up from installation media or in Recovery mode, then a firmware password was set by the previous owner, or the machine was remotely locked via iCloud. You'll either have to contact the owner or take the machine to an Apple Store or another service provider to be unlocked. You may be asked for proof of ownership.
Launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the internal drive—not any of the volume icons nested beneath it. In thePartition tab, select the default options: a GUID partition table with one data volume in Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format. This operation will permanently remove all existing data on the drive.
After partitioning, quit Disk Utility and run the OS X Installer. If you're installing a version of OS X acquired from the App Store, you will need the Apple ID and password that you used. When the installation is done, the system will automatically restart into the Setup Assistant, which will prompt you to transfer the data from another Mac, its backups, or from a Windows computer. If you have any data to transfer, this is usually the best time to do it.
Then run Software Update and install all available system updates from Apple. To upgrade to a major version of OS X newer than 10.6, get it from the Mac App Store. Note that you can't keep an upgraded version that was installed by the original owner. He or she can't legally transfer it to you, and without the Apple ID you won't be able to update it in Software Update or reinstall, if that becomes necessary. The same goes for any App Store products that the previous owner installed—you have to repurchase them.
    3. Other issues
If the original owner "accepted" the bundled iLife applications (iPhoto, iMovie, and Garage Band) in the App Store so that he or she could update them, then they're irrevocably linked to that Apple ID and you won't be able to download them without buying them. Reportedly, Mac App Store Customer Service has sometimes issued redemption codes for these apps to second owners who asked.
If the previous owner didn't deauthorize the computer in the iTunes Store under his Apple ID, you wont be able to  authorize it immediately under your ID. In that case, you'll either have to wait up to 90 days or contact iTunes Support.
When trying to create a new iCloud account, you might get a failure message: "Account limit reached." Apple imposes a lifetime limit of three iCloud account setups per device. Erasing the device does not reset the limit. You can still use an account that was created on another device, but you won't be able to create a new one. Contact iCloud Support for more information.

  • Possible to get iMac repaired without going to the apple store?

i recently purchased a 24" imac and called apple to request a repair due to a stuck pixel in the middle of my screen, very distracting, and i got a case number but was told that i need to take it to an apple store to have it looked at first and then the store would send it out to apple. not a big deal except for the fact that the closest apple store is nearly a hour away. so my question is, has anyone been successful in getting a prepaid box sent to their house for a non-portable instead of having to drive it to the apple store first? Thanks
    Ty

Could the apple store still decide differently?
They could, yes, once they examine the situation. A tech on the phone can only guess based on your description, so the tech at the store may come up with a different determination once he/she sees the system.
Also, there are also some "authorized service centers" that come up when i do a search on apples website... should i try one of those or just stick with the apple store?
Whether the case you've opened will authorize a service center to go ahead and replace the screen, or whether they'd be required to consult with Apple, I don't know. My guess is that the latter case is the one that would be correct; that the service center would have to examine the system and then contact Apple to see if Apple would authorize replacement of the screen. And as I said, it's very unusual for Apple (or any other manufacturer) to replace a screen for a single bad pixel.
So it's your call. If there's a service center near you and you want to try them, it might be worth the time, at least to call them and discuss the situation and see what they think.

  • MacBook Pro keeps restarting even after going to the Apple Store

I have a mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15" and it's been really acting up lately. It began randomly going black with the keyboard still lit up and then rebooted itself without warning. When I updated to Mavericks, it started happening multiple times a day. I did a virus scan, repaired the Disk Permissions, basically tried every troubleshooting method I could on my own. Nothing would help it so I finally took it to the Apple Store and they decided I should wipe everything off my hard drive, do a clean install of Mavericks and then restore my files and settings from Time Machine. They did everything (except Time Machine) for me and it seemed to fix the problem at first. My laptop was even much faster. But then it started happening maybe once every one or two days, and now it's randomly restarted 8 times since last night. It’s so frustrating. I’ve noticed that it often restarts when I’m using iMessage. When it restarts and my iPhone is plugged in, it always asks, sometimes even twice, if the phone should trust the computer…it’s like doesn’t even recognize the device when starting up. There are also some other problems with my laptop - my DVD drive spits out everything I put into it and my battery needs to be serviced/replaced. Do you think it could have to do with the battery, even though this usually happens when the laptop is plugged in? There were no problems with my hard drive at the Apple Store and they ignored that my battery had to be serviced, so maybe that’s not it. What could the problem possibly be? Let me know what other information I have to provide in order to figure it out. Please help! Thank you so much.

Thank you for your help everyone
So Friday night I took my laptop back to the Apple Store. They noted that my battery was on its way out, but they didn’t think that was the problem, so they kept it over the weekend to run diagnostics. Upon further investigation, they decided that the battery WAS the problem causing the restarts, so I had them replace it…but it’s still restarting! I got the computer back yesterday evening and it’s already happened 8 times. It just randomly reboots out of the blue without any warning. I can’t imagine what else the problem could be. I was wondering if maybe it is just a problem with Mavericks since the operating system is new and it seems to be happening to quite a few people. I tried to take note of what I suspected might be causing it - it often crashes when using iMessage, for example, so I tried keeping that application closed, but it didn't stop the rebooting.
Here is my most recent report, if that helps at all. I'm desperate to have this problem fixed so any help/insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks so much.

  • Cannot locate my admin password as it was setup at the Apple store when I purchase my MacBook Pro.  They didn't give me the password and I didn't know I needed it.  How do I get it?

When the Apple techs at their store setup my new MacBook Pro, my first Apple product they evidently acted as The Administrator.  They did not tell me about this process or give me a password.  So now when I need the password I have no idea what it is, etc.  The Apple store is 60 miles from where I live.  A challenge to just go in and get help.  How can I find my password or set a new one?

  • I have an iMac with Mavericks that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls" from particularly Mail, Google Chrome, and Word. I took it to the Apple store and it was fast there, at home slow. I have been having internet speed issues, could it be that?

I have a pretty new iMac with LOTS of storage (about 4TB with externals) that is experiencing a lot of "spinning balls of death" from time to time in almost any program that I might have open, but particularly MacMail, Google Chrome browsers, and Word. I took it to the Apple store to be checked out and it was really fast with no issues there. I brought it home and it was better at first but then it started happening again.
I have been having a lot of issues with Time Warner where my download speeds will dip really low, and all I can think of is that MacMail goes and tries to check for email and can't get out to the internet and it locks all the other resources up while it is doing it. It will also take a REALLY long time to even let you look at mail. The folder size is over 13GB (down from 22GB that I just cleared out from - I have a lot of MP3s etc in there) and I will try to get this down to under 10GB which might help, and the mail is on an external drive. I have been told that Verizon is not a shared network but a direct connection to their server, and if I can't fix this then I will try switching to them. If anyone has any direct knowledge on this stuff, I am all ears.

We need to know more about your system, please download EtreCheck and run the report and please post it on your next reply. Then we can see how your system is configured, what apps are on it and look for anything obvious. We will look forward to seeing your report.

  • Do you have to buy OS X Lion from the Apple Store or if you have just bought the Mac it will automatically be inside? Please Reply

Everything is above, Please answer my question!:)

Lion was released in July 20, 2011. Any NEW Mac sold after that date is entitled to Lion AFAIK. If you purchased yours from some seller that had it aging on the shelf since God-knows-when, contact Apple and see if you can get some sort of redeem code to download Lion from the Apple Store for free.
Older used/refurbished Macs are entitled to the OS in force at the time of their manufacture and should come with the installation media as a condition of sale. Apple MAY provide you with replacement media for a cost, if at all. Lion upgrades will have a cost and the Mac must follow an upgrade path thru Snow Leopard before Lion can be installed via an online download.

  • HT1386 unable to sync my ipad2   receive an error message 1140 (unknown error)  HELP..don't want to have to go to the apple store to be able to sync my ipad to my desktop !!

For some unknown reason, I am unable to sync my ipad2 with my desktop.  I receive a message saying it cannot sync due to an unknown error 1140.
Hate to have to run to the apple store to get this resolved...hope someone here knows the answer !!  I need to sync !!
    Thank You.

Experienced User Terrell Smith recently posted on this Error Code:
    Terrell Smith:
"Today I was in an Apple Store, and four Apple Geniuses could not solve this problem. It seems to have something with large iPhoto Libraries, because when I started iPhoto up with a small library (1,100 photos), the problem did not occur. In iTunes, under the Photo's option "Sync Photos," if the iPhoto library is large (38,000 photos), the option to select the radio button "Selected albums, Events, and Faces" is grayed out, and you cannot select it.
My guess is that since the large iPhoto library will not fit on your iOS device, iTunes throws the 1140 error.
As others have noted, if you uncheck "Sync Photos" in iTunes, the rest of things will sync instead of throwing the 1140 error message.
But you don't have synced photos then.
The Apple Store told me they have no solution for this error. We should file iPhoto Feedback, and that this issue has been escalated to Apple Engineering."

    Hope this helps

  • Will i get the same care from the Apple Website as i do when buying from the Apple Store?

I am looking into buying an iPad mini 3 for christmas, i wanted to get the free engraving which only comes when you order from the website.
I was wondering if i will get the same level of care buying from the website as i did from the Apple Store?
I purchased a MacBook Pro from the Apple Store in Bath, UK about 3 years ago now, and when my Hard Drive packed up i took it into the Apple Store in Cardiff, UK to get it looked at. They replaced my Hard Drive there and then; free of charge as they were able to trace my purchase back to the Apple Store despite it being out of warranty. Will it be the same if there ever was a problem if i was to buy it off of the Apple Website?

The warranty is the warranty. Your device will be backed if it's bought from the site or brick and mortar store or even an authorized third party (in other words I bought my iPad at best buy and I can still take it into an apple store and have them back the warranty)
