how are you losing them? you can go to expresslane.apple.com and contact itunes to see if they can regrant you those downloads

It also apparently changed all the contacts on my computer. Now I have a only a portion of my contacts both on my PC and my iPod 4g with nothing to restore from. Thanks Apple! Hope you update your crap OS sometime soon. Maybe then my Messenger app will start working again. Maybe then I can use the app store again. Maybe then I can use a working map again. If you don't have a backup, then all your pics/text/notes are gone.
You can sync back music and app. If you were syncing your contacts with a program in itunes, then you'll get that back.
Not sure why you didn't do a backup, especially prior to doing an upgrade. -

I believe now you potentially lose all extensions, plug-ins when you use the new reset function, but you will let me know.
If that is the case, your find corrupt file method maybe better. However, I reviewed the two help articles and there appear to be more files than just the delete search.json file and a possible search.sqlite file in the Firefox Profile Folder. I am confused. Then I have to find the folders. I think help articles mentioned how to find the profile containing the files, but not sure. -

Sync with iTunes to recover these things.
Connect the iPad to your compter and launch iTunes. Select the iPad on the left side of iTunes and then click on the Apps tab. Go down through the list and select all of the apps that you want to put on the iPad. Do the same thing with the photos. Make sure that the headings - Sync Music and Sync Photos have been selected and then sync again.
If you have changed the configuration - you will have to click on Apply in the lower right corner of iTunes. -

Check iTunes / Preferences - Devices on your computer. If you created a backup, you'll see it in the list there.
If not, according to Apple, from the iTunes Help menu...
"It’s important to make backups of your purchases from the iTunes Store. If you lose a purchased item for any reason and haven’t backed it up, you’ll have to buy it again."
So, in the future, follow the instructions here for backing up your iTunes purchases.

You really should be doing backups with an actual backup application, especially one that will work automatically, and, if your external HD is large enough, back up your entire system. These can automatically back up only what's changed since the previous backup, and some will keep "archive" copies of things you've changed or deleted, also.
Too many things can go wrong, such as your internal HD failing, and you'll have a major project to reinstall everything.
You already have Time Machine, built-in to OSX. You might want to review the Time Machine Tutorial, and perhaps browse Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.
