Is it best to run Windows 7 in Boot Camp, or would it be better to use VMWare Fusion or similar? I would love to consolidate to my mac but am afraid installing Windows will ruin it!
It all depends on what your useage of Windows will be, for playing games install it in BootCamp, for word processing, spreadsheets, email. browsing etc a virtual Machne will be fine.

Can I put OS X Yosemite on my 2010 macbook pro with current operating system OS X10.6.8?  I just bought a new printer and it requires minimum 10.7

You cannot get Mavericks because it has been replaced by Yosemite. Your machine will work just fine with Yosemite, but you don't have to upgrade if you prefer not to.
You should always maintain a backup. Hard drives fail, data are lost. A backup is a security blanket for your data.
    Basic Backup
For some people Time Machine will be more than adequate. Time Machine is part of OS X. There are two components:
    1. A Time Machine preferences panel as part of System Preferences;
    2. A Time Machine application located in the Applications folder. It is
used to manage backups and to restore backups. Time Machine
requires a backup drive that is at least twice the capacity of the
         drive being backed up.
    3. Time Machine requires a backup drive that is at least double the
capacity of the drive(s) it backs up.
Alternatively, get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
      1. Carbon Copy Cloner
      2. Get Backup
      3. Deja Vu
      4. SuperDuper!
      5. Synk Pro
      6. Tri-Backup
Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore.  Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files. For help with using Time Machine visit Pondini's Time Machine FAQ for help with all things Time Machine.
Although you can buy a complete external drive system, you can also put one together if you are so inclined.  It's relatively easy and only requires a Phillips head screwdriver (typically.)  You can purchase hard drives separately.  This gives you an opportunity to shop for the best prices on a hard drive of your choice.  Reliable brands include Seagate, Hitachi, Western Digital, Toshiba, and Fujitsu.  You can find reviews and benchmarks on many drives at Storage Review.
    Enclosures for FireWire and USB are readily available.  You can find only FireWire enclosures, only USB enclosures, and enclosures that feature multiple ports.  I would stress getting enclosures that use the Oxford chipsets especially for Firewire drives (911, 921, 922, for example.)  You can find enclosures at places such as;
      1. Cool Drives
      2. OWC
      3. WiebeTech
      4. Firewire Direct
      5. California Drives
      6. NewEgg
All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover.  Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

  • Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. Anyway, i deleted windows and want another OSX on there instead. How do i make this partition bigger please??

Hi, I have macbook Pro, running Leopard OS X. I partitioned my hard drive a while ago to install windows and only allowed myself 10 Gig of data. I deleted windows after i realised i wasnt enjoying using it at all and wasted my hard drive. I now decided that i want another OSX on there instead yet i have only allowed myself 10 gb on the partition. I have ben thru some programms but am struggling on making this partition bigger.
I only want it at 20gb but cant seem to make the partition bigger, only smaller or split it into further partition.
Is there a way to do this, i have all installation discs from original OSX so think this could help.
Any help please would be fantastic.
    Thanks Chris

Hi, dragging the partition will only make smaller, not larger. In disk utility you can only split or make smaller the partitions. Yes i booted from installation disks also but still no help.
And Brody, I am willing to erase the disc completely, infact jus started doing a backup in order to do so but that failed also. And the information you gave on partition a hard drive, Although very simple and i already know how to do this, but it wont let me make the partition bigger, and i dont want to make a new partition, just enlarge the one i already have, which i dont see possible from disk utility.
Getting really frustrated now, even backing up is saying no to me. **** external being a douche.
I dont mind erasing the hard drive but surely this must be doable without deleting the secondary partition back t a single volume, and re partitioning into 2 volumes again.
    Thanks again

  • I have macbook pro running Intel Core 2 Duo if I upgrade to Lion OS Xv10.7 will my macbook run slower?

I have macbook pro running Intel Core 2 Duo if I upgrade to Lion OS Xv10.7 will my macbook run slower?

I have a 13" MBP with the Core 2 Duo processor.  I do have 8 GB of memory, needed because I need to run Windows in a virtual machine (Fusion) to access client web sites that require ActiveX controls.  The Windows VM environment locks up 3 GB of the memory.
I did all the maintenance steps in disk utility on the harddrive before upgrade, double checked compatability with all applications and drivers and made sure that I had a drive clone in addition to my Time Capsule  backup.
The only thing that didn't work on Lion was my RingCentral VOIP client, and that was expected from my research.
The upgrade went smooth and I really haven't noticed much speed difference.

If neither iPhoto not IC can seethe card it might suggest an issue with the card or the ports on the camera/mac.
Try reformat the card, change the ports and/or use a USB Card Reader.

  • I have a Macbook Pro with no operating system installed

I do not know the model number but I think it is this:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-2-duo-2 .8-aluminum-15-late-2008-unibody-specs.html
It has an Intel Core 2 Duo running at 2.8 GHz.  4GB of memory and 320GB HD.  It has a 15 inch screen.
Can anyone confirm the model number and tell me what operating system I should install on it?
I would like to get Mavericks on there but I'm unclear of the steps to do it.  Should I go to an Apple store and have them do it (will they even do it)?
Or should I create a USB and do it myself?  I only have a Windows and Linux system available to make the USB though I could ask a friend with a MAC to do it.

The official 10.5 installer should work, if it is not system specific.   Look to make sure your official, is retail, as this tip explains.  You have sufficient memory, you could install 10.6 from the currently sold 10.6 retail directly.  So unless you are sure your applications are not 10.6 compatible, that might be the best option.

  • Install SSD, running macbook pro with two operating system and two hardrive

I am currently running bootcamp with Window 8 and Mountain Lion. I am about to install a 256gb SSD, replacing the optical drive. The partition on my current setup is 125 gb for window 8 and 125 gb for OSX.  Since this is the first time I am running a computer with two hardrive and two different operating systems, how should I go by installing (software) my SSD. Should I just make one hardrive run window and the other one run OSX. Is it possible to move the OSX partition to the SSD. Should I just install both window and OSX again on the SSD? What are some other options?

  • Macbook pro : error loading operating system

So my problem is an interesting one. This was setup with bootcamp with xp and oxs 10.4 originally if I recall correctly. So I went to go back into the mac side and it failed to boot. I couldn't find my boot cd for some time so she sat. Then I found a 10.5.1 disk and she'd boot with it but couldn't mount the hard drive for tests or anything. I was able to wipe the drive and then mount it. But doing so wiped my mac partition, and the disk I was loaned wouldn't do the install so I went down to the mac store to buy brand new copy of now leopard... Got home and the drive don't recognize it. There is a dvd drive in this macbook pro, and I can through in an xp cd and it reads it fine but the funny thing is that now it also will no longer read the 10.5.1 disk I used to get to disk utility before. It just kicks it back out. So anyone got any ideas? It will read an xp boot installation cd. But not a brand new snow leopard or even the older 10.5.1 disk it was just reading fine. Thanks again in advance for help.

You need to locate your System DVDs that originally came w/your computer. You cannot use System DVDs from one mac to another because they are _*machine specific.*_ More than likely, it is probably the reason why the retailed purchased DVD did not work.
You can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

  • Anyone have macbook pro running hot?

I have a early 2009 Macbook Pro that appears to run extremely HOT, unless I unplug the power block.
Any one have this problem? Im thinking its the power block?

While it is charging and very hot do the following.
Open the Terminal app - it is in your Mac's Utilities folder and looks like this
Select the entire line that follows (triple-click to select it), select Edit > Copy, and then Paste it into the Terminal window:
    pmset -g sysload;pmset -g batt
Drag your cursor from the point at which you pasted that command all the way to the end, and copy the text. Paste it in a reply.

  • Macbook pro running 10.4.11 can I get it upgraded?

What do I need to do to get it upgraded?

10.6.8 is really the best you can do on that machine, it's still getting updates for OS X and somethings, but not Safari or Java 6, so you need to turn off Java Preferences and in the browsers and install Firefox as it's still getting updates for 10.6
The reason I say 10.6.8 is the best you can do, is because the later operating systems of 10.7, 10.8 and soon to come 10.9 are more feature rich and hardware demanding, it's very unlikely you will be able to upgrade much beyond 10.7 and tolerate the poor performance, then to only have Apple drop you for support a mere short time later anyway.
Your going to have to install more RAM into the machine, 10.6 needs 3GB+ of RAM to run well. 10.7 and above need 4GB+ to run well, despite the minimal Apple says.
I wouldn't bother spending any more money on that machine, it's so dated and the dust hasn't been cleaned out that it's been suffering many years from overheating damage.
Your just best buying a new machine.
But if you like to tinker then go for it. The 10.6 disks are online at Apple Shove it in and upgrade, hold your breath.

  • Macbook Pro cannot install operating system

I started a thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2793307&tstart=0 about my problems but found no solution. Today I ran Apple Hardware tests and found this error "4hdd/11/40000004:SATA(0,0)" I found some other posts that said I had to get a new hard drive, is this my only option?

What is your S.M.A.R.T. Status. See Disk Utility--> top level in left column.
It seems your AHT is indicating Hard drive.
Your other option is to boot off external clone if you do not want to replace your internal hard drive.
