If you enabled "Find My iPhone" on your iPod touch and if it has a internet connection at the moment, then you have a chance to track your device. Therefor log in to your iCloud account (www.icloud.com) on your Mac/PC and try to locate your iPog Touch.

You can only activate find my phone while you have the phone, now you have lost it, there isn't anything you can do.

Did you try to rename one of them? iTunes: How to rename your device
iTunes remembers the settings for each phone when you sync, even if both phones are called "My iPhone".
So make sure to set it up like you want to, after that iTunes will do the rest.

There's no way to remotely activate it if it is turned off.
Apple has no service for finding an iPhone. You can check your registered device listing with Apple to get your serial number so you can give it to the police.

My laptop is broken, hard disk failure. It's gone to the hospital but it will require a new hard disk. I have an iPod. I also have iCloud which everything ( I think) has been backed up to. I have an new iPhone and need to sync it up. Can I sync it to my iPad? So I can retrieve the back up? Scratching my head a bit!

You can log into iCloud.com from a computer browser and access contacts. I believe there's an export command available there.

then you can log into icloud.com and use the findmyiphone feature to track it.

Call your carrier/cell phone provider and see if they will block it. If you did not activate and use the Find my iPhone feature there's not much else you can do.
