I have moved all my itunes onto a new external hard drive to free up space. It has wiped my ipod clean! I can still see the itunes on the new hard drive so I restored my iPod and tried to sync. Although when I connect my iPod it's in the process of syncing, so many songs in I get a pop up saying could not copy to my iPod as xyz song title could not be read or written. I click ok for this pop up to dissapear and then another pop up appears saying could not coyp to iPod because of unknown error.!!! Help I'm going crazy.

Did you go into iTunes to change the location of your media files? if not you will need to go into iTunes and click on preference and select the advance tab then click the iTunes Media folder location. Select the location of your on external hard drive.

What are you actually trying to accomplish? Backing up the library, or moving it?
If backing up don't delete anything.
If moving did you move the library files as well? Ideally you would copy the entire iTunes folder out to the external drive then shift-start iTunes to connect to the relocated library. This method makes it easier to move the library to a new drive or computer later and keeps everything together for backing up. Rather than delete everything rename the iTunes or iTunes Media folder first (depending on which approach you took) and make sure the library still works before deleting.

In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.

I have a portable 500gb HD and I use it to put music and other stuff.
Earlier, out of the blue, all of my music from iTunes disappeared, and I tried to put it back by dragging my folder "music" from the external HD to iTunes, but the message "Attempting to copy to the disk Macintosh HD failed. The disk could not be read or written to." appears and nothing happens. Only 40 albums (the same ones every time) go into iTunes before the message appear.
I tried restarting the computer and nothing happened.

This sounds more like a hardware issue, possibly a failing drive if you had mysteriously vanishing files and there are problems writing to your drive.. You could get better support on a forum for your Mac model or at lest one for your operating system version. Have you verified the disk with Disk Utility to see what it reports?

How do I copy an iPhoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive?

I'm running out of space on my external hard drive, so I was advised to buy one with triple the amount of space. So, I need to copy my current iphoto library, which is on an external hard drive, onto a new external hard drive. I thought I could just drag and drop it in, but that doesn't seem to be working.

Make sure the external drive is formatted MacOS Extended (Journaled) and then drag the iPhoto Library to that drive using the Finder.
Then double click the library in its new location to open it in iPhoto. Test it thoroughly, if it is working, before deleting the original library on the internal drive.

If you've just moved the drive between systems then see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows just in case that reveals the missing files. Apply to a single album folder first as a test. Otherwise, if you've not done too much with the drive since things went missing, an undelete tool might recover the lost media. FreeRecover looks promising... Select the drive, use the options to get file paths and check file integrity, then, presumably, you can restore anything that has been deleted that looks recoverable. Backup to another drive when you're done.

So I thought I was smart and manually moved my iTunes music folder to my new external hard drive. I've changed the location in Preferences but can't locate my music through iTunes. What do I do now? My library is on my external hard drive, but I read I should have done this through iTunes. Any advice?

Is it still possible for you to temporarily return the iTunes Music folder to its original location?
If so you should be able to see your music in iTunes again and then follow the instructions in this article in the Apple Knowledge Base.

Then it's not my advice.
There are two very important things about this.
• NEVER - move or alter any folder named iMovie Events or iMovie Projects on DeskTop/Finder - at all !
All changes must take place inside the iMovie Application - else connections break ! and iMovie can't find them.
Move Events and Projects back and hope that they will be found.
• The external hard disk - MUST BE - Mac OS Extended (hfs) formatted - UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange works for most BUT NOT FOR VIDEO - not for iMovie nor FinalCut.

-iTunes version 10.6.3 64-bit.
-Happening since os x update 10.7.4. No issues with os x 10.7.3.
-It will look like it's sync'ing the song both on the mac and the phone, but it's greyed out on the phone where it shows the progress of the song coming over. It will then give the above error after about 5 minutes. Can't play the same song through itunes on the mac as well. It will play for a milisecond then hang iTunes and at other times the entire macbook pro so I need to hard shutdown. About 500 songs out of 6000 so far I've found the issue. Doesn't seem to be any from the itunes store, just cd's I've ripped onto my mac but I'm not positive on that as I can't test all songs with the time it takes to reboot (found the 500 by trying to sync all songs and having itunes random pick them). Also noticed that on a single album most songs will be fine but then others have the issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!

Ok, so I dont think that I have ever been more mad at a program than I am right now. So I had about 120 songs on my iPhone that I all bought myself, but about 80 of them were on my computer. So I imported them into my iTunes library then I tryed to sync all my music back on; including the other forty songs. But when I did that, all of the 80 songs wouldnt sync. They work perfectly fine on iTunes, but they will just not sync! I have tried dragging them into playlists and everything. I am not new to iTunes, and I completely understand why people steal music and jailbreak their devices. All the stupid copyright laws and sharing stuff mixed with a poorly written program makes everything so difficult! I completely understand why people try to root their iphone and manually drag the songs on, because there isn't something saying "no! don't do that! Even though you bought the song you can't do that!" If Apple was so concerned with copyright, then they should really try to fix iTunes and make it easier for people to use, because otherwise, they are really turning people away from paying for their music. I know quite a bit about computers and have been around, and if iTunes is messing with me, I am positive that it would be insanely confusing for an old person, or someone who just wants to put music on their iPod and doesnt want to deal with all this stuff that he has no idea about. Well, sorry about the huge long complaint, but it is so annoying, and I am sure that many people will agree with what I just said! Oh and if anyone does have advice, feel free to let me know. I purchased some music from the store on my iphone, but itunes won't load those tracks into my library! It comes up with error 36 (the disk could not be read or written to) but I am able to get apps that I have purchased. What's up with that??

I have 4 tracks that I purchased from the itunes store, 2 audio and 2 music videos. I used my iphone to make the purchase. Unfortunately, when I got home and tried to transfer them to my itunes library, it tells me that the disk can't be read frrom or written to. This it totally bogus as I am able to download apps that I purchased at the same time as the music.
