I have my IPod Touch connected via USB but it says it's not connected to my computer

I have my IPod Touch connected VIA USB port but a message tells me it's not connected to my computer so I can't get mail, etc. What do I have to do to remedy this?
Thank you.
Rjhs

What is the exact wording of the error message?
What are you trying to do?
The USB connection provides not internet connectivity. The iPod can only connect to the internet via wifi

I have an Ipod touch version 4.2.1 and the instructions do not detail how to update to iOS 5. Can you help me with step by step instructions.

iOS 4.2.1 suggests that you may have 2nd generation Touch, which cannot be updated past iOS 4.2.1
Check http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1353  for help in identifying your model. A quicker method may be to check the back casing. If your iPod has Model No.A 1288 etched into it, then it's a 2nd gen Touch.
Assuming that you are using the latest version of iTunes (today, that is 10.6.3), to check if your iPod can be updated, connect it to your iTunes and look on the Device/Summary pane. Select Check for Updates. If there is one, you will see a message telling you that and how to install it. However, if you see a message saying that your iPod is up-to-date, then it cannot be updated.

Yes. get a computer with iTune 10.5 and:
    - Transfer iTunes purchases to the computer:
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to a computer
    - Transfer other stuff using a third-party program like one of those discussed here.  Most are good for music.  It is harder to find one for other stuff like synced photos.
Copy music from Ipod to new computer...: Apple Support Communities
    - Connect the iPod to the computer and make a backup by right-clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting Back Up
    - Restore the iPod from backup and sync as neccessary.

  • I have an ipod touch, version 4.2.1 (it says this is the latest update) can I connect this to iCloud?

I have an ipod touch purchased in 2011, and now have a MacBook Pro, and an iphone4s. I want to connect this ipod to iCloud so that I can transfer the music to my new laptop and iPhone. Is this possible? Please help, I have been searching for a solution for a long time now

You can't use iCloud without iOS 5 or higher so you won't be able to use it on your iPod.  Also, iCloud doesn't sync your music unless you subscribe to iTunes Match (see http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/).  If you want to transfer music to your devices, import it to your iTunes library on your laptop, then sync it to your devices (See either http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12313 for Windows or http://support.apple.com/kb/PH12113 if you have a Mac.)

    - Do you have the latest version of iTunes on the computer? iOS 6 requires 10.5 or later. The current is 10.6.3
    - Have you tried a reset. Nothing is lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - You could try placing the iPod in Recovery Mode and restore the iPod. However, if you can't restore the iPod or use this program to get the iPod out of recovery mode
RecBoot: Easy Way to Put iPhone into Recovery Mode
you will lose use of the iPod.

  • IPod is recognised via USB, but all other devices are no longer recognised.

After a year of good work, at one moment the USB ports on the front of the computer doesn't recognise any device, except the Ipod Touch 4G wich is working fine. All other devices are not capable of communicating with the PC using USB-ports (camera's, SD-cardreaders, TomTom, etc.). It might have something todo with the IOS 4.2.1 upgrade (Apple), but I'am not sure. Any solutions/suggestions please?

ICLOUD is not highlighted on my ipod touch. I can not turn it on. My software is updated but I have no idea why i can not access Icloud.

  • I cannot sync my Mac's Address Book to my iPod Touch (2G), via iTunes. All else syncs, just not Contacts. Why?

I realize I can't do this with iCloud, but now I can't with a cord and iTunes. I even reset to factory settings and tried again. I even tried the advanced option to "replace information on this iPod with information from this computer", clicking Contacts. But nothing. I have no contacts in my iPod. What am I missing here?

I do not think the problem was solved - what was completed was a work around.
I have the same problem - open itunes, plug in iphone, select info, synch contacts, select merge contacts (iphone contacts will move to address book and visa versa) Mac to Iphone success - Iphone to Mac - no go.
This is how it should work - and it is not???  Why?  How do you make the itunes synch work?
Synching with mobile me is a great work around - if you use mobile me.
Synching with icloud is great to backup but does not get contacts added on your iphone onto your mac.
How do you get contacts added to your iphone into address book on your map with synch?

  • My iPod touch is stuck on the apple screen, and will not show on the computer.

I went to pick it up and try to turn it on, and it wouldnt work.  I called and they told me to press power and home buttons and hold.  It worked, now it is stuck on the home screen.

Is it stuck on the Home screen (Screen showing all your apps) or on the screen that shows an apple?
