I have no hardware or external drives after erase and reinstall of  Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6

How do I fix this?

If you have access to another Mac you could start your computer in Target Disk Mode (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.6/en/8443.html) and use the other Mac to install OS X on your computer. At the end of the install the other computer should boot off of your Mac, use Software Update to update your Mac to the latest OS. Once complete shut everything down and disconnect the firewire cable between the computers and you should be good to go.

  • How do I reinstall backed up user folder after erase and reinstall of 10.4?

I had to erase and reinstall 10.4 on my g4 ibook. Prior to this I backed up my user folder on an external drive. Is there and easy way to get my machine the same as it was before the OS reinstall - library settings, files etc?

Is it assumed that apple users should have another apple machine and or a spare unused firewire hard-drive for system maintenance?!? Sure, if I were running it for buisness use, I'd have a mirrored drive, break the mirror, and upgrade one half of it, but this is the machine in my bedroom! I've got to say, I've rapidly going back of apple over these update QA issues. The fixes offered by people (and I appreciate the time and effort they put in to help others) so far all seem to involve creating other systems on spare drives, or using target mode from another mac. Come on Apple! You can't seriously expect your home users to have two machines, or a spare drive (personally, any drive I have, I use in something or other! I'd consider it a waste having a drive spare just for system upgrades to my Mac). It's about time Apple posted on this subject. It's unfair to expect your userbase to support your COMERCIAL OS for free so heavily.
I bought a mini because it was cheap, and I wanted to play with OSX. I bought the next OSX release because I had grown to like OSX. Now I'm rapidly going off it. I don't want to have to buy another device just to make it safe to upgrade.
Sorry for the Rant. Simon, this isn't meant as a criticism of your response. I just feel that apple should be more proactive here, having another disk is of course a good way to go, however, it takes the old TCO a bit to high for a home/play machine imho.
Anyone from Apple care to comment? (or will you simply edit out my post... afterall that would be easier than addressing the problem).

  • Erasing and reinstalling my mac pro hard drive

I have an older Mac Pro (2006 I think).
I want to erase and reinstall the hard drive. Once the disk is clean, is there a way to install OS directly to mountain lion? Or will I have to install from an ealier complete set of physical disks?

If it shipped with 10.4 and is a 2007 or earlier Mountain Lion is not supported, only up to Lion.
You download and save the Lion installer first and would need to have 10.6.8 to access the App Store.
Leave what you have as is, and just install a new system to another of the drive bays.

  • Can't mount external drive after erase

I have a 40gb hard drive that I erased and formatted as fat. Specifically, formatted as FAT, 0 data after trying 7pass and getting an error. I want to install the disk on my PC and reinstall XP on it. My problem is that when I did this I got an error (cannot remember type) and now the drive doesn't show up in disk utility, my desktop or my PC anywhere. I don't know where to go from here. I've tried a couple of Partition Managers, both on the Mac and PC with no luck. Also tried Diskpart from the PC terminal with no luck. I'm not very well versed at using terminal on either machine but it looks like I'll have to resort to it to solve my problem. I have an IBook running OSX10.58. My PC is a Dell 2400, Win XP sp3. Help of any kind appreciated.
    Al

Problem solved. I moved the jumper pin from Cable Select to Master. I formatted it in windows ntfs. Don't care about the data. I'm going to do a fresh install of XP sp3.
    Thanks,

  • Why won't my external drive mount in Lion when it will mount in Snow Leopard?

    Hello,
I have an external hard drive, a Rocstor Arcticroc 4T, that will not mount on my Mac Pro running OS 10.7.4.  It will mount when I connect it to my other system running OS 10.6.8, or when I boot to an alternate partition on the same system running OS 10.6.8.  I've tried using the latest versions of Disk Warrior and Drive Genius to repair/rebuild/reformat the drive with no success.
When I boot to OS 10.7.4 the disk shows up in Disk Utilities, but the volume is grayed out.  When I select the volume and try to mount it I get the following error:  "The disk "Media 3" could not be mounted.  Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."  I've run repair disk numerous times, with no errors reported.
There is no media on the drive, so I can re-partition, reformat or change the RAID configuration with no consequences.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -Jim

the drive case needs drivers and or firmware. Happens all the time esp. with many makes and vendors due to the bridge it uses, that does the SATA drive <=> to FW/USB/etc to your Mac and whether you use FW800/400 or USB2 or even eSATA (w/ a PCIe SATA controller).
If you are using native SATA and an PCIe SATA controller.... tell us! and the vendor needs to provide drivers that are not included with Lion. Lion just 'broke' support it has had with Snow Leopard.
As for RAID - a RAID created with SL will not always support Lion for booting or mount. Happened with 10.3.9 too. And SL would not install on a RAID created with Leopard. See the pattern emerging?

  • Program installation after erase and install of Mac OS X.

    Good day to you all,
A quick question to you Mac experts and enthusiasts. I am going to perform an erase and install on my 24" Aluminum iMac. I have numerous programs on my HD. If i copy them to an external drive and complete the erase and install, will I be able to just copy them back to my HD after, or will I need to reinstall them from the discs and .dmg files? Any help would be much appreciated on this topic. Thanks to all in advance for your time and input!

*Hi Nathan, Welcome (Back)* to Apple's Users Help Users Forums.
Maybe I missed something—wouldn't be the 1st time—cuz I am surprised no one has suggesting making a clone prior to the E&I. You could then clone back your apps.

Purchase at $27.95 will allow smart backups that look at the bu files and only move over new ones. It's quick at ~7 mins to change ~1 gig out of 20.
Be sure to test that the clone boots and apps behave properly.

  • White screen after erasing and reinstalling OS X

    HI there,
I have a 5 year old iMac that has been running perfectly up until a month ago.  We had a power cut (not the first time the mac has been suddenly turned off), and after turning it back on I get the Apple logo and a progress bar for about 30 seconds before it turns into a white screen, with no cursor.  I have called Apple 3 times about this issue and we have gone through all the steps you see in the forums here to solve this problem.  Yesterday Apple told me to erase the HD and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X.  I have everything backed up on time machine so I went ahead and did this.  During the installation process I did not choose to transfer data from my external HD via time machine in case the problem i was having was due to something I had on my external HD.  After installation was complete the computer restarted only for the white screen to appear again.  I had to boot into safe mode to fully complete installation.  After this was done, I restarted the computer only to encounter the white screen again.  My question is, are there anymore steps I can take to resolve this problem, or is it time to take it to a Genius Bar?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for using the Apple Support Communities
There's a few more things your can try. Press and hold Option + Command + P + R at the startup "Dong" and your computer will reboot again. When that is done Press and hold Command + V at the "Dong" and this will put the computer in verbose mode and allow you to see exactly what the computer is hanging up on while it is booting up.

  • My imac has os x installation error after erase and reinstall

i've just got imac g5 off a mate. he asked me to to wipe the drive and reinstall OS X 10.3.5 with the disks he gave me. Inserted disk 1 and there was an error reading disk. Tried holding down option key down when turning computer on and it booted from disc. chose erase and install which it did until 100% reached and it said there had been an error on installation. advised to reinstall - then the disk failed completely. got hold of black osx 10.3 panther installation disks and just got no entry sign after gray screen with apple logo. tried c on startup and the apple sign moves slightly to the right and has dodgy looking ligns across it - computer freezes. tried open fireware reset vdram and reset all. nothing. removed new ram from slot. nothing. swapped original ram to other slot. nothing. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!

siroberts, Welcome to the discussion area!
Not sure how you ended up in the iBook G3 discussion area since you are asking about an iMac G5??
The original iMac G5 shipped with OS 10.3.5 (7P35) and the last iMac G5 shipped with OS 10.4.2. So neither iMac will boot from a retail version of OS 10.3.
Depending on which iMac G5 you have, you may be able to get it to boot from a retail version of OS 10.4. Otherwise you need to contact Apple (or your mate) and get the original discs for that iMac.

  • I'm having trouble installing Itunes after my hard drive was erased and reinstalled

I'm able to download the newest version of iTunes, but when it's almost finished, it gives me a message that says I need to exit out of iTunes, even though I'm not in iTunes.  When I click ok, it tells me the download can't continue.

  • I have a Mac OS X Version 10.4.11 and cannot install Mac OS X Snow Leopard. Install 'stalls' and will not continue. Help!

After resisting an upgrade for the longest time, I had to purchase one to support my new iPhone 4, as my old version would not upgrade my iTunes. Now I cannot get the system to install. It 'stalls' and will not continue. I have tried 3 times [the definition of insanity: repeating the same behavior expecting different results] and each time I had to hard boot to even get the disk to pop out. Help!

Hi there. Thanks for even looking at my question! I am brand new in the community. I finally just gave up and went to bed, leaving it running and my sister watching it. Of course, it did indeed finally install but my gosh! I have NEVER seen something take so long! Thanks again for the email. Linda w/a new OS!

  • I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and I cannot update it to Snow leopard

I have a MacBook that is running 10.5.8 and meets the tech specs for Snow Lepoard.  I am attempting to upgrade to SL using a "Mac OS X Install DVD version 10.6.3".  However, when attempting to run the installer from the disc I recieve an error stating "This Mac cannot be upgraded to this version of OS X."  No further information is given nor are there any buttons or clicks to recieve additional info.  I receive the same error whether I'm running the installer when the Mac is already running or when holding down the C key as the computer starts up.
Does anyone know why this issue is occurring or how to resolve it?
    Thanks

Start by checking if you can run Snow Leopard:
Requirements for OS X 10.6 'Snow Leopard'
    http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
(NB: PowerPC applications can still be run in Snow Leopard using Rosetta, but they will not work in later versions of OS X.)
The OS 10.6 Snow Leopard install DVD is available for $19.99 from the Apple Store:
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
    and in the UK:
    http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MC573/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
When you have installed it, run Software Update to download and install the latest updates for Snow Leopard to bring it up to 10.6.8, or download the combo update from here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
Check via Software Update whether any further updates are required, particularly to iTunes.
You should now see the App Store icon in iTunes, and you now need to set up your account:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4479
You can now upgrade to Mavericks OS 10.9 for free IF you have one of the following Macs, with not less than 2GB of RAM, and at least 8GB of available space on your hard drive:
    iMac (Mid-2007 or later)
MacBook (13-inch Aluminum, Late 2008), (13-inch, Early 2009 or later)
    MacBook Pro (13-inch, Mid-2009 or later), (15-inch, Mid/Late 2007 or later), (17-inch, Late 2007 or later)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or later)
Mac Mini (Early 2009 or later)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or later)
    Xserve (Early 2009)
    iCloud system requirements:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4759
If you cannot run Mavericks you can purchase the code to use to download Lion from the App Store (Lion requires an Intel-based Mac with a Core 2 Duo, i3, i5, i7 or Xeon processor and 2GB of RAM, running the latest version of Snow Leopard):
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/D6106Z/A/os-x-lion
    or Mountain Lion:

Yesterday when I opened up the iPhoto (which I have it in my external drive due to the size of file) I get the message that it is not compatible with the new system(or something like that) and ask me to upgrade so I did. Then another message pops ups and asked for rebuilding the Thumbnails. So I clicked rebuild. Next it asked me to do one of three things(I can't remember all of them) so I chose the last one which is to download a photo to iPhoto. Now I only have that photo I downloaded in iPhoto file but not the rest of my pictures. The iPhoto library which is stored in my EHD shows it has 349GB but it only show one thumbnail of the last picture I downloaded after the rebuild process. What can I do to recover the rest of the file?

  • How do I migrate from a former user account on an external drive after a clean install?

This question has been partially answered before but not to my satisfaction and, from what I've found, not for Mountain Lion.
My MBPr was running fine for a week after I transfered my User account to an external drive. After some reorganization I decided to move the acount to a different external drive. I blundered and, for whatever reason, was unable to log in to any account on my MBPr. Not even my backup account - which suprised me. (I tried repairing disks, permissions, etc...) I tried to resolve it on the phone with Apple to no avail. Finally, I gave up. I booted into recovery and did a reinstall. After 12 hours I came back to find that it wasn't a clean reinstall. And I still couldn't log in to anything.
I then did an erase and reinstall. After another 12 hours I now have a clean install of Mountain Lion on my MBPr. I have an external drive with my former working user directory (Home:Users/mrmoose) on it. (BTW, It is LARGER than my internal SSD drive, it is not bootable, AND I have no backup of it in Time Machine format.)
My current user account is Macintosh HD:Users/bullwinkle
    1) Is there a way to "reclaim" my user account on the external drive - possibly without even copying or migrating?
    2) Can I copy the contents of bullwinkle (excluding some of my folders under Documents so it fits) to Macintosh HD Users/bullwinkle? Including the Library folder? I have audio plugins, etc...
I'd still like my User directory on an external drive. But I will settle for keeping it on the internal drive. I just want my info back.
Why, oh, why does Migration Assistant require your data to be in TIME MACHINE format only - why can one not migrate from a full copy on an external drive? Why can't it look at the darn thing and say, "Hey, that's a copy of an OSX User directory. I can migrate data from that."?
I would greatly appreciate a detailed response. THANK YOU. Lama Out.

~/Library is probably the one you don't want to move back because it may bring the issues back along with it.
All your own data you can drag & drop. You can drag the contents of any folder Movies, Music, Pictures, Documents (or as much as you want).
Rather than try to replace the Library you can take ~/Library/Application Support, Mail, Safari and any other folders you need.
To access your hidden ~/Library folder go to your Finder "Go" menu hold the option key to choose "Library".
Then you can drag it to the Sidebar for easy access.
