I have OS10.6.8 but I do not have iCloud on my Systems Preferences. I do have Mobile Me, which is a defunct program.

I have a new iPad and want to sign up to iCloud on it and my Mac (OS10.6.8) but my Systems Prefs do not show iCloud, only Mobile Me, which I've never used and which has become defunct anyway.
Denise

The minimum requirement for iCloud is Lion 10.7.5 (Mountain Lion preferred): the iCloud Preference Pane does not appear on earlier systems - the MobileMe pane appears on Lion and earlier but is non non-functional - you cannot now open or access a MobileMe account.
To make use of iCloud you will have to upgrade your Mac to Lion or Mountain Lion, provided it meets the requirements.
The requirements for Lion are:
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
2GB of memory
OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
7GB of available space
To purchase it you will have to ring Apple at the number given at the bottom left of this page.
The requirements for Mountain Lion are:
OS X v10.6.8 or later
2GB of memory
8GB of available space
and the supported models are:
iMac (Mid 2007 or newer)
MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)
MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)
Xserve (Early 2009)
MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)
Mac mini (Early 2009 or newer)
Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)
It is available from the Mac App Store (in Applications).
You should be aware that PPC programs (such as AppleWorks) will not run on Lion or above; and some other applications may not be compatible - there is a useful compatibility checklist at http://roaringapps.com/apps:table

getting the same answer everytime I try to log into i cloud. I get a message that I have a valid ID and password but it is not an icloud account. I have tried for almost a entire year to go there. i have re-downloaded the icloud contorl panel. before I got this notebook  HP windows 8 it was easier . I do not like Internet explorer so I downlloaded.Google chrome. What must I do to go to icloud? I tried Internet Explorer and  chrome. I buy music on itunes and I am not sure I get all the content I purchase. I have had to reset my password often and my email address to. I once spoke to a live tech a long while ago and he helped me combine all my purchased and downloaded music. Now its impossble to talk to anyone on the phone or even online and i am frustrated.

You must create the account using an Apple device, a Mac (Lion or greater) or an IOS device (IOS5 or greater). Having done that you will be able to sign in from your Windows machine.
FYI, iCal is an application that can display calendars from iCloud (and others) it is not a calendar itself, merely a calendar client. In Windows Outlook is the calendar client.

To enable iCloud on your Windows PC,
first set up iCloud on your other (Apple) devices,
then install the iCloud Control Panel for Windows...

  • TS3989 New MacAir but  photostream does not work.  Message though everything is on. "In order to use Photo Stream, you have to be signed into your iCloud account in System Preferences." And,

New computer but Photostream does not work.  I am signed into my account but get the following message:  In order to use Photo Stream, you have to be signed into your iCloud account in System Preferences.  I go to system preferences and then get a message that says that my account cannot be accessed.  However, I am using my icloud account for email and other items and it works fine.  Any thoughts?

Are you getting this messages in iPhoto? If so try the following (again?):
Log out of iCloud in the System/iCloud preference pane and disable Photo Stream in iPhoto's Photo Share preference pane.  Then log back in and re-enable, respectively.  That should jump start Photo Stream.

  • I am not able to open my 'system preferences' it shows up on top, but the window just won't open. I haven't installed anything new, I have also restarted my computer, but still encounter this problem. Help?

I am not able to open my 'system preferences' it shows up on top, but the window just won't open. I haven't installed anything new, I have also restarted my computer, but still encounter this problem. Help?

Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks without erasing drive
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported then click on the Repair Permissions button. When the process is completed, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet
if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

What to do when trying to log into my iCloud and it says "this apple iD is valid, but it's not an iCloud account"?

If you have not already created an iCloud account elsewhere you cannot do so on  PC, and that is the error message you will get. You can create an iCloud account on a Mac or an iOS device and then you should be able to sign into it in the iCloud Control Panel in Windows.

  • HT204053 iCloud says my Apple ID is valid but it is not an iCloud account. I find how to link on Apple services but it seems to leave me hanging. How do I actually link the 2 accounts? On a Windows 8 PC?

iClound Control Panel says my Apple ID is valid but it is not an iCloud account. How do I link the 2 accounts on a Windows 8 PC with iTunes 11. I go to Apple services and it gives some instructions; but they leave me hanging. They tell me to put in the same user name and then just stop. Doesn't say what to do next. I did what it said and the 2 accounts are still not linked. Anyone know how to assist? Thank you.

Apple isn't trying to be anti-PC with this; they support PCs going all the way back to Vista SP2, a 3-generation old version of Windows.  To sync iCloud with a Mac you have to be running one of the last 2 versions of the OS X operating system (i.e., a newer version than you do on Windows).  I assume it's set up this way because it's a service provided customers purchasing Apple devices that utilize iCloud syncing services, and if you happen to also you own a PC, it will sync with that as well.  It wouldn't make sense for them to provide this service, including a free 5GB iCloud account, hosting for backups, syncing services, free photo stream, etc. for non-Apple customers (who, for example, may only own a PC).
If you have a friend with one of these devices who is willing to let you create the account on their device, you could then use it on your PC.  They would have to delete the existing account from their device in Settings>iCloud, then let you sign in with your ID to create a new account, then delete this account from their device and sign back into their own account.  You could then use this ID to sign into the newly created account on your PC.  Note: each device can only create 3 iCloud accounts, so you would be using one of their 3 alotted accounts, but they may be willing to do this for you.
iCloud is really designed to keep your data in sync across multiple devices that you may own, and with your computer.  It will also automatically back up your device, stream photos taken on one device to all your other devices, and allow you to locate a misplaced device using Find My iPhone.  It doesn't, however, sync music if that's what you're looking for.
If you want to be able to access your music from iCloud you don't need an iCloud account for this.  As mentioned earlier, music purchased from the iTunes store is already available in iCloud.  Music from other sources, such as in your case, can only be accessed from iCloud if you subscribe to iTunes Match (see http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/).  If you do, you can then upload your iTunes library (up to 25,000 songs) to iCloud an access them from an iOS device via iCloud, even without an iCloud account.  Music purchased from other sources that is copy protected (contains DRM) is not eligible and will not be uploaded to iCloud so be sure your music purchased from Amazon doesn't contain DRM before subscribing.

    See -> Mavericks System Requirements.
Most of us are running Mavericks with no problems - others seem to be having various problems (if you check out the Mavericks forum). But I would recommend that you have a current backup whichever way you go.

Hi Mary, the other so called "Features" of iClound will not work for like Syncing, but eMail will.
MobileMe & dot Mac will still work last I heard.
iCloud Mail setup, even in 10.4/10.5…
Don't delete your old account yet. Just setup a new one in Mail>Preferences>Accounts, little plus icon. Choose IMAP as account type, not ,mac or MobileMe.

my mac is updated but icloud is not showing up in my system preferences, only MobileMe which looks like it charges a fee.  Are icloud and mobileme the same? i thought they were different.  if they are different why can't i see icloud on my mac?

Your Mac is 3 versions of OS X out of date, current release is 10.9.1, minimum required for Lion is 10.7.4, you have 10.6.8.
Download 10.9.1 (Mavericks) from the App Store

  • HT204053 I dont have iCloud in my System Preferences How do I get it?

I have the old macbook and have tried setting up iCloud numerous times but have not been able to due to not being able to find the iCloud icon in system preferences.
I have presumed that I cannot get iCloud because I'm running on MAC OS X 10.6.8 but when I've tried updating to the latest version (Mountain Lion) a pop up appears and tells me that it cannot be used on my Mac. Would this be due to me needing to download the versions before Mountain Lion in order from version 10.6.8 first or do I just have a fault on my Mac?
    Thanks in advance

You need 10.7.2 or later for iCloud. If your MacBook is not compatible with Mountain Lion then you need to get Lion. Call Apple to order a Mac App Store download code for Lion.

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Connecting your MacBook Pro and your MacBook Air will be the fastest way, but you have to spend money on cables and adapters (also, your MacBook Pro doesn't support Thunderbolt).
As you have a Time Capsule, one thing you can do is to start your MacBook Pro and make a Time Machine backup. Then, turn on your MacBook Air and set it up. Setup Assistant will ask you to restore a backup, so select the option to restore the backup from the Time Capsule and be patient. This can take a lot of time if you have to migrate a lot of files

I don't have iCloud in my system preferences, I am using 10.6.8 how do I see how much storage I am using and how do I purchase more?

You can't check your usage on the iCloud website - you have to do this from the iCloud prefs pane, which you don't have. If you are only using it for email you would have to be storing an awful lot of messages to exceed 5GB. If you are concerned about this you can download some of them to your Mac and off iCloud.
To do this simply create a folder under 'On My Mac', go to the iCloud mailbox, select some of the messages and drag them to the folder you created. Don't try to do too many at once (say more than 100) and allow time for them to download.
If you haven't yet set Mail up to access iCloud, but are simply using the website, you can set it up as detailed here:
Entering iCloud email settings manually in Snow Leopard or Leopard
If you do decide to upgrade, the latest version of iPhoto is only £10.49, though MS Office is more of a problem. But you can go on as you are as long as your Mac holds out - Snow Leopard is a good solid system.
