I have plenty of space on my hard drive (500GB), but when I plug in my iPhone there is a window stating the pone cannot be backed up because of lack of disk space. The same occurs with attempting to import CD's into iTunes. The hard disk was replaced recently in order to gain extra memory. Is there some sort of limit set up from the original hard drive causing this problem?

Boot up from your Snow Leopard Install DVD while holding down the "c" key.
Select the language you wish to use, and then choose "Disk Utility" from the menu bar.
Your HD should appear in a panel on the left hand side of the window which opens. Select it and then click on the "repair disk" button in the right hand section of the window.
If Disk First aid is unable to complete the repair you will need to use a stronger 3rd party utility like DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro.
Once this process has been completed restart your computer.

  • I need to erase free space on my hard drive.  But when I am in disk utility the format and name are pale as is the erase free space button so I cannot erase free space.

My start up disk is full.  I have been through my computer and erased a lot of music and video to free some space.  I then went to disk utility to erase free space and find that the erase free space button is pale and therefore won't work.  Nor can I select or deselect MacOS extended journaled.
    Advice please?!

    Recovering Disk Space
If you have less than 20% disk space then it is time to roll up your sleeves and search for what you can delete and what you can offload to another disk.
If you have less than 10 GB you definitely need to delete or offload some files or purchase a lager disk or SSD (see below).  You may want to maintain at least 20 GB of free space so when your disk starts filling again it will have some room before it hits that 10 GB mark again.  More headroom is better.  If you let the space fall much below 9 GB you might not be able to boot your machine.
Initial easy steps to gain disk space:
    - Delete all files in the Downloads folder.
      Empty the Trash.
    - Start iPhoto.
      Empty its trash.
      Restart.
    - Restart in Safe Mode:
      Restart the computer.
As soon as you hear the chime press and hold the right shift key.
Be patient. Hold it down until you see the Apple icon.
      Empty the trash.
      Restart in normal mode.
    - Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
Hold the option key down and click "Go" menu in the Finder menu bar.
Select "Library" from the drop down menu.
        Library > Mail > V2 > Mailboxes
        Delete "Recovered Messages", if any.
    - Empty the Trash.
    - Restart.
    - Re-index your system disk (Macintosh HD):
      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2409
    Time Machine Snapshots:
If your disk is 80% full that is normal.  Time Machine uses up to 80% of the disk space for local snapshots.  To get rid of these snapshots simply plug in your Time Machine backup drive and run a backup.  See About Time Machine's 'local snapshots' on Mac notebooks: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4878 and What are Local Snapshots? http://pondini.org/TM/30.html .
If you are concerned that the “Other” category of disk usage is taking too much space and for information on deleting files then look here:  https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-5142
    Backup:
Run a Time Machine (or other) backup since you are about to delete and move files and you may need to recover from any inadvertent mistakes or decisions.  You will need one external hard drive for your Time Machine (or other) backup and a second if you plan to offload some files.  (See suggestions for where to purchase hard drives at the end of this message.)

Methodology to protect your data.  Backups vs. Archives.  Long-term data protection:

    Deleting files:
Then use the free application OmniDiskSweeper http://www.omnigroup.com/more to explore your volume in descending order by size so you can attack the problem from the top down, deleting the largest unwanted files first.  Delete with caution and do not delete any system files.  Remember to empty the trash after trashing the files.
Additional reference on freeing disk space:
    http://pondini.org/OSX/DiskSpace.html
    Offloading files:
Consider moving some of the no-often-used large files or directories to an external disk.  Use ODS again to find them.  As noted above this will be at least your second hard drive.  Your first one(s) is/are for your Time Machine (or other) backup(s).  Do not offload files onto a Time Machine disk.
Format the second drive as Mac OS Extended (journaled).  Using OWS to find large files/folders and copy them from the system drive to the external hard drive and delete them from your internal drive.
Then  > System Preferences > Time Machine > Options… > Remove the offload HD name from the exclusions list.
Now both your system disk and your external offload disk will be backed up onto your Time Machine disk.

    Hardware — Bigger disk/SSD:
If your system has upgradeable storage then if you are still tight on disk space consider larger storage.  If you have a disk consider replacing it with a one TB disk.  Check out a one terabyte HGST 7K1000 7200 rpm, SATA III drive from OWC http://eshop.macsales.com ($100).  If you have an SSD consider increasing its capacity to 240 or 480 GB.  A standard 240 GB SSD would cost from $200 to $280. See OWC and Crucial: http://www.crucial.com/ for options.  OWC sells 120, 240 and 480 GB SSD upgrades for MacBook Airs.  A 240 GB upgrade costs $265.   http://eshop.macsales.com/shop/SSD/OWC/ .  If your Mac is under warranty or AppleCare replacing the SSD will void the warranty.

  • Does iTunes offer a restore from other than current data on my pc?  I've lost all my pictures because of lack of disk space on my pc.

Does iTunes offer a restore from other than current data on my pc?  I've lost all my pictures because of lack of disk space on my pc.

Are you talking about restore of the iPhone from its backup, or something else? The first time you sync an iOS device on each calendar day iTunes will update the backup set for the device. If you remove data from the device and backup, then the backup of that data has gone. For this reason it actually makes sense to restore an iOS device periodically as, once used for a restore, the backup set is archived and a new one created.
Ideally you would have backed up these pictures somewhere. If you enabled it, you may find pictures in your Photo Stream.
In general you need to keep a backup copy of all your important files. iTunes will let you download most past purchases from the store but backing up other content is down to you. The user  Backup your iTunes for Windows library with SyncToy suggests a way to do this for iTunes, but the same tool can be used to preserve other folders of data.

  • My MacBook Pro has a 500GB Hard Drive (HD), but when I search my capacity I says that I only have 384.99 GBs of capacity. Where are the other 100GBs?

My Mac has been a little slow, so I figured that I should make sure that I have enough storage capacity on my Hard Drive (HD). In doing so I realized that my HD is missing 100GB of space capacity. I thought that my HD was supposed to at least 499.25 of available space.
When using "About this Mac", it clearly shows that I only have 384.99 GB of capacity.
Where are the other 100 GB? I should mention that I recently deleted a partition for that same amount of storage. That has to have something to do with this? Can you help me?

  • I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  Now I want to delete the backed-up files from my hard drive.  But when I do and reconnect the external hard drive, the files are also deleted on that.  What do I do?

I have backed up my disk using Time Machine.  I then deleted the back-up files from my MacBook hard drive.
I then reconnected my external hard drive and find the files I deleted from my hard drive are also deleted from
my external hard drive.  Can someone tell my what what happened?  I'm confused.

    Hello,
Time Machine is not a good way to do that, when it eventually needs more room it deletes old Backups to make room.
If you really want to keep Files but remove them from the Internal Drive, then I'd get another external drive to copy or clone them to that is not used for TM.

  • Can't import CDs into 7.6.2. because of lack of disk space

I just installed iTunes 7.6.2 this morning. I was able to import one CD. I started to import another. After half the tracks were imported, I got an error message saying that disk I was using was full and that I should delete some files and empty my recycle bin. I store my iTunes on my hard drive and my hard drive isn't close to full. I ripped the remaining tracks using Windows media player figuring that I could just add the files to my iTunes afterwards. When I try to add one of the tracks to iTunes, I got the same error message. I'm not sure why. Is anyone else having this issue?

I figured it out. I went to preferences then advanced and saw that the location for my iTunes was a flash drive which was full rather than my hard drive.

  • Hard drive works, but when plugged in hangs the system

First of all, since this is not a Linux-specific problem I'm not sure this is the right place for this post.
Anyway, for the past few years I've been using a 250GB IDE hard drive mostly to store backups on.  For quite a while it worked fine, but when  plugged in again after being removed so I could clean out the dust in my PC it didn't work quite right anymore.  It caused the system to hang and gave error messages remniscent of those detailed on this page.  After some fiddling it worked OK for a while, and then one day it randomly did this again.  I took the ribbon cable out, then the hard drive, and realized one of the pins was pushed in (at the time I thought it was broken).  After some reading I decided to sacrifice a ribbon cable.  What I did was yank a pin off of an old DVD drive that doesn't work and shoved it in the cable where the short pin was.  I made sure it was seated well, plugged in in, and hoped for the best.  To my delight it worked without a hitch for maybe a year or more.
And then a little more than a month ago we had lightning strike a power line outside of our house and it fried my motherboard.  I now have a replacement board, but after all of the taking apart and moving around and stuff, the hard drive is back to its old antics.  The pin-in-the-cable trick wasn't working anymore.  After I realized that the pin wasn't broken half-way but rather pushed in, I grabbed some needlenose pliers and pulled it out.  It now will plug into any ribbon cable just fine and the computer recognizes it, but it's slow at POST and hangs the system when booting the OS, whether it be Linux or Windows.  Knoppix CDs boot just fine, although slower.  S.M.A.R.T. sees no problems.
Basically I'm wondering 2 things.  First of all, is there anything I can do to get around the hangs?  And second, I'm considering buying an external hard drive enclosure for regular 3.5 inch hard drives and using it as an external USB drive.  Since the drive does still work and I can add/remove stuff while booted in Knoppix, and the main issue seems to be my system hanging, I figure, maybe, I can just plug in the drive when I need it after the computer is already booted up and it will work fine.  Does this sound like a reasonable expectation?

What you hear may sound like it's the hard drive, but it's really an electronic type of noise. Same with my PB. Try what BGreg said, and wait for the drive to spin down - you'll still hear the noise.
There was a thread about this issue several months ago, and IIRC the conclusion was that it's a normal noise, and that you should just ignore it if possible.
If you must make it quieter, set processor performance to the lowest setting in Energy Saver preferences. But it's not going away completely.

  • Finder window in internet doesn't show external hard drive. But it's connected and shows up in normal finder window.

Mac OX X 10.6.8. My mac works great with my external hard drive (my passport). When I go to attach a file to facebook, email, or upload anything directly from my external, the finder window that pops up no longer shows my external as being connected. But when I go to finder on the macbook, it shows that my external is there and I can access files no problem. This JUST started happening. What's wrong?

The hard drive won't show up in finder or disk utility, however i can see it in airport utility.
You would not expect it to show up in disk utility .. it does not work on network drives.
Finder may or may not be able to see it.
If the airport utility is showing the drive you have some possibility.
Did you GUID partition the drive .. or is it still MBR.. ie if it was originally formatted for PC it will be MBR and won't work.. so put it on the Mac again and change the GUID partition.. I would also set a smaller partition size.. the internal drive of the TC is partitioned though you cannot see them.. put a first partition less than 1TB and see how it goes.
In finder.. don't forget ML has issues with network drive.. make sure you tick all the extras in finder preferences.. and if the drive won't mount try to do it manually.. go .. connect to server.
AFP://TCname or TCIPaddress.. where you use the actual name or IP.
Also is the power supply for the hub at least 2A preferably more.. so the hub is powered but the disk is not powered??
