  • Startup problems -- not finding hard disk

I have a g5 iMac that is several years old (pre-Intel). This morning, my husband went to use it. He said there was some iDisk synching error (I've been getting those on my MacBook Pro, too) and then the cursor turned into the rainbow and he rebooted. Upon rebooting, the question mark folder started flashing and the computer wouldn't boot up. It's definitely having a problem finding the hard disk. I've started it up with the Tiger Install DVD but when I get to Disk Utility, the only thing that shows up in the lefthand column is the DVD drive with the Install DVD Is my hard drive fried? Of course it's never been backed up. Is there anything I can do from home or do I need to lug it into the Apple Store? Please help!!!
    TIA,
    --abby

Here's Apple doc.#58042 in case you need it; flashing ? mark.

I had a problem with the hard disk on a 13" 2010 macbook pro. Replaced the hard disk with an Hitachi 1TB disk but when I tried to erase and format, it fails with input/output error and at other times saying unable to allocate memory. Any help much appreciated!

Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try again.

I have bought a time capsule to use as time machine device. Until now I have used a external hard disk. How can I transfer the the old time machine datas to the time capsule?

This is really difficult to the point of not really worth it.
Keep the old TM backups in archive.. and start afresh on the TC.
Time Machine has a different way of backing up on Network drives cf Local drives.
Pondini does have a method to do it... but I would not recommend it.

  • I currently have a MAC Mini, which has 1 Firewire 800 port.  I have a 1TB external hard disk that runs at Firewire 400.  Can I insert another external hard drive that runs at Firewire 800?

Here's the deal.  Currently running SL 10.6.8 on a MAC Mini.  Planning for eventual upgrade to ML.  Have a 1TB external hard drive partitioned into two volumes, one volume for Time Machine and one volume for SL which I periodically update using Superduper.  Thus I always have a point-in-time bootable backup on the external hard drive.
The MAC Mini supports Firewire 800.  However, booting from my current external hard disk is pretty slow, since it only supports Firewire 400.  I am considering buying an Iomega MiniMax which supports Firewire 800.  Then, I would use the MiniMax as my bootable backup volume, and relegate the older hard drive to Time Machine.
So, question #1 is, can I daisychain the new MiniMax between the MAC Mini and my existing external hard drive?  My expectation is that the new Mini Max would run using Firewire 800 and that the existing hard drive would run at Firewire 400 speed as it does today.  If it doesn't (e.g., daisychaining in the Firewire 400 external disk with the MiniMax Firewire 800 external disk ends up running the whole leg at 400), my resolution will be to run the existing hard disk off an available USB port and have just the MiniMax running at Firewire 800.
Why am I going to all this trouble?  That's question #2.  I don't trust upgrades; they always break something.  When I upgraded from 10.5.x to 10.6.x, the web directories got renamed, and all of my web apps 403'd until I figured out what happened.  Plus, I have accounts for other family members, and in order to ensure their ability to use the computer during my upgrade process, I need to have the ability to fall-back quickly to a known-stable version of OSX.  So what I'm trying to do is insulate myself from problems by partitioning the MiniMax into two volumes, taking a Superduper image of my current installation on the Mac Mini to MiniMax external drive volume 1, then upgrading to ML on the MAC Mini, and take a SuperDuper image of that to MiniMax external drive volume 2.  Then, if the upgrade results in problems I can't resolve immediately, I can simply reimage the MAC Mini from MiniMax volume 1.  BUT ...
... I've read that the ML installation creates a "service and support" partition that is different than the startup disk.  I'm concerned that I won't be able to reimage the hard disk in the MAC Mini once I upgrade it to ML because of the partitioning changes it introduces on the startup disk.  Theoretically, I +should+ be able to use the disk utility on my SL system to repartition the disk in the MAC Mini prior to reimaging it from my backup, but I'm considering the possibility that the new partition may be of a type that the SL disk utility cannot identify, and might therefore be unable to delete or even detect.  So I'm hoping someone else has been down this road and can advise me.  Even at Firewire 800 speeds, booting from an external disk is still going to be slow, so I want to be able to restore my SL image to the MAC Mini hard disk.
A little background on me.  I work for a major disaster recovery provider.  I used to have a Mac PRO G5, which I got used, and the first thing I did with it was install a second hard disk, SuperDupe an image from the first disk to the second, and made sure I could boot from the second.  THEN I started using and customizing the MAC.  I really feel vulnerable with the MAC Mini, since it only has the single internal hard drive - sort of like going out in public dressed only in a long T-shirt.  So my whole thing is, I ABSOLUTELY MUST BE ABLE TO PUT THINGS BACK THE WAY THEY WERE before I do the migration to ML.
Obsessive-cumpulsive?  Yep.  Anal?  You got it.  That's why I'm in the DR business.

  • Problems on MacBook Hard Disk

I have a problem of my MacBook. My Mac's hard disk free space is getting smaller and smaller, but i haven't saved new things, download stuffs nor upgrading any of my software. It seems that every time i switch it on and surf the net with safari or just switch it on and do nothing, the capacity of my hard disk will decrease. I have been seeking for help almost two weeks, it is really difficult to know what is going on to my MacBook. Help please.

    Hey,
Did you manage to get an answer? Are you deleting internet temp files? Some time ago I had the same issue when I started using Veoh Web player.
It seems that software saved the downloaded video information and, of course, the free space began decreasing.
Not sure whether this answer may help you but, who knows? :-))
    Kind regards

I connect to network hard disk called X:
When i open a pdf file in X: and change something to save.
A message will tell me "Files can not be saved, can not be saved to this file name, use a different name or save this file in another folder"
But if I use \\192.168.0.1 connect to network hard disk.
And do same thing to save file.
    It can save success.
    Anyone have same problem?

    Hey YaoTingHuang,
Please try saving any other PDF file to the same folder location and check if the same message appears.
Let me know what happens if you disable protected mode under Edit> Preferences> Security (Enhanced) and uncheck 'Enable protected mode at startup'

  • Problems with partitioning hard disk

Hi, I have an external hard disk with 2tb capacity.
I want to create one partition of 1,5 tb to use with Time Machine and one partition with 500 gb to use both with windows and mac.
I have partitioned the first one in HFS extended and the second one in exfat, using the GUID partition table.
Now the problem: on the mac both the partitions work well.
In Windows, on the contrary, the exfat partition is not recognized. It says it is to be formatted a nd if I try to format it (in windows) it says it is not able to do this.
I don't know what is the problem, even if I think it can be in the GUID table used...

I think you can have only one OPTION for the partition table map scheme which is for the entire drive.
So, when you created your two partitions (1.5GB Mac OS Extended - Journaled format and a 2nd for the rest of the space as ExfFat format) you chose the partition table map scheme as GUID, Windows will not see either partition. For Windows to see the ExFat partition, the partition map scheme has to be Master Boot Record.
I have never formated two different partitions like you and made the partition table map scheme Master Boot Record. I know the PC will see the ExFat partition, but I don't know if the Mac will see the other. Understand you won't be able to boot from the Mac formated partition since the drive is MBR. Try it! You will need to reformat the drive with your two partitions when you change the partition table.

  • Problem ejecting external hard disk

i've an 80gb external hard disk that i use frequently with my macbook, and i haven't had any problems with it until a few days ago.
everytime i finish using my hard disk and want to turn it off, i'm unable to eject it thru finder or just by ctrl+click on it and selecting eject. if i do by that method, the whole computer just freezes and i'll need to hold on to the power button to shut it down.
i've even reinstalled my system TWICE to try to solve that problem until recently, i discovered a way to workaround it, which is to fire up disk utility and select the disk to unmount it.
is there anyway i could do to solve my problem here? it's quite a hassle to launch disk utility all the time for such a menial task. :/
P.S my external hdd has 2 partitions.

yes i have. on both partitions, and disk utility found no errors in both of them at all.
i've even formatted one of the partitions again.

  • Scratch Disk Problems - Too much hard disk space?

Now, here's a question for scratch disk problems. My photoshop (7) used to work (on my old computer), now I've re-installed it and it says it and windows are paging to the same location, and I can't open it because "Scratch disks are full." I know there are lots of questions like this, but this one is special. I believe the problem is I have 1.5 TB of hard disk space, which apparently is too much and causes problems (?). Anyway, I would change the scratch disk location but I can't open photoshop in order to do so. Any suggestions?
Basically, is there a way for me to change scratch disk locations if Photoshop won't even open?
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Changing the location won't do anything nor will resetting the prefs (sorry Manish-Sharma). You really need to physically downsize the partition to be below or around the 500GB ceiling. It's unavoidable as this is inherent in the old file I/O API that those programs use. Changing the scratch disk location would do nothing as long as the program partition is stil lthat large and throws the program through a loop. open your drivemanagemnt by using My Computer --> Right-click --> Manage --> Disk Management and split the partition or whatever.

  • Severe problems and had hard disk replaced 2 times! Going to 3rd?!!!

Hello everybody... I come to you because I'm running out of options.. I've bought an iMac 2.16GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with mac OSX 10.4.11 more than 2 years ago. 8 or 9 months after buying it it started to malfunction and eventually crashed. I took it to the nearest mac support store and they told me that the hard disk burnt out and they had to replace it for a new one. They gave me no explanation for it. Last year, it started having problems again... would take a lot of time to start up and eventually showing up a question mark when starting up... talked to a technician on the mac support phone line, guided me through the hardware and sftware tests... When using disk utility, it said it was unable to mount the disk.. I took it to the store and once again, they said the disk burnt and replaced it for a new one. I insisted that there should be another problem elsewhere because this was the second time it happened. They said no... And I lost all my data, because I had no backups.. Now the 2-year warranty has expired a couple months ago and I'm having problems again... It only starts in safe boot. I tried to run the hardware test by restarting it and pressing D while it starts up and instead of going to the hardware test, it started normally, without safe boot for the first time. I took the opportunity to go online and write this post... I really don't know what to do because I have no money at the moment to take it to tech support (since it's out of warranty, I'm sure they'll charge a lot!)
If someone has any idea on what may be happening to my iMac, please help... To me it's just really weird that it's the third time happening...
    Thanks!

If you purchased the AppleCare extended warranty that would mean your system is covered a full 3 years from the date of purchase. You can go to this site:
    https://selfsolve.apple.com/GetWarranty.do
and it will tell you the exact date your warranty expires. If you are still covered contact Apple directly explain the problem. Because this is the third time you have had the same thing fail it is possible you might be entitled to a replacement machine.
    Best of luck.

  • I have a LaCie external hard disk. I do not know how to retrieve photos from iphoto that have disappeared. I do not know how to use Time Machine

I have a LaCie external hard drive. I also have Time Machine. I somehow have "lost" almost all my 5,000+ photos from iPhoto 8.1.2. I would appreciate someone giving me directions on how to retrieve the photos from the external hard drive or Time Machine.
The last thing that I did that is different from my normal routine was to trash duplicate music tunes from iTunes. I cannot figure out how that would have caused my photos to disappear.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.
    Marilyn

I remember being cautioned to never do anything with the iPhoto Library. Should I have clicked on the iPhoto Library and then Restore?
I do not know "how" items are being placed in the LaCie external drive, just that it shows a backup running about every hour. I have taken a snapshot of the Time Machine Preferences I would you to see. Maybe that would answer this question.
In March 2011 I had to have hard drive on my iMac replaced. I had been using a Seagate external drive for backups. However I was not using Time Machine. When the Apple guru was helping me restore all my files etc on the new hard drive he was not familiar with Seagate and recommended I purchase this LaCie and use Time Machine. I never had any problem retrieving items from the Seagate backup. It was very straightforward. As I mentioned previously, I just don't have a clue with the LaCie and Time Machine.
I hope this is not TMI.

  • I need to transfer all photos to an external hard drive. Many photos have been moved around or deleted from computer hard drive, but still have a very full hard disk. Are the photos with questionmarks in Lightroom still taking up hard disk space? I'm so l

    Hi folks,
My hard disk is full. I already moved lots of photos from other folders on the hard disk to other external hard drives, so there are a lot of question marks in Lightroom. So, are those photos still taking up room on the computer hard disk? I want to move everything I have in Lightroom off of the computer to another external hard drive, in hopes that will free up space. I watched a tutorial, and read some things about it, but I need simple instructions please.

I cannot find this 300GB "Backup" in the Finder, only in the Storage info when I check "About This Mac".
You are probably using Time Machine to backup your MacBook Pro, right? Then the additional 300 GB could be local Time Machine snapshots.  Time Machine will write the hourly backups to the free space on your hard disk, if the backup drive is temporarily not connected. You do not see these local backups in the Finder, and MacOS will delete them, when you make a regular backup to Time Machine, or when you need the space for other data.
See Pondini's page for more explanation:   What are Local Snapshots?   http://pondini.org/TM/FAQ.html
I have restarted my computer, but the information remains the same. How do I reclaim the use of the 300GB? Why is it showing up as "Backups" when it used to indicate "Photos"? Are my photos safe on the external drive?
You have tested the library on the external drive, and so your photos are save there.
The local TimeMachine snapshot probably now contains a backup of the moved library.  Try, if connecting your Time Machine drive will reduce the size of your local Time Machine snapshots.

  • I have a western digital hard disk that I am using  with time machine and I wanted to do a recovery of my operating system but when I do it i'm not able to see my time machine savings because it needs a password to be activated what can I do ?

How can I do the recovery of my mac mini with my western digital password protected hard disk (it's my timemachine) when I do the process of recovery everything goes well until I have to choose the date of a previous saving from which I can do the recovery nothing appears.

In the sidebar of a Finder window, select the icon representing your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) At the top level of the volume are folders with these names, among others:
    Applications
    Library
    System
Enter Time Machine and select the most recent snapshot, which is behind the frontmost window. Are those folders present in the snapshot?

  • I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup Disk for Time Machine disconnecting itself with the message that I ejected it improperly.. It ejected itself - why?

I have an iMac OS X 10.6.8 and have problems with the backup drive to Time Machine ejecting itself and so does not automatically backup the way it is meant to do. It is connected with an USB cable to my iMac. What could cause this - malfuntioning drive?

The "iLife" apps are not part of any Mac operating system install and are a separate purchase.
Once you get past 10.6.6 you can purchase and download iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie. iWeb and iDVD have been discontinued.
Snow Leopard 10.6.6 and higher include the App Store application which is what you use to purchase Lion.
