  • Does defragmenting the start up drive have implications for Time Machine?

Will Time Machine have to create a totally new backup if I defrag the startup drive?

Depends how you do it. If you erase and restore, yes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1338
If you're using a 3rd-party utility that just moves things around, probably not (but I can't swear to it).

  • I am trying to install Mavericks on my McbookAir, but it won't install, saying that my hd is used for time machine backups. I have an external HD connected to my mbAir that I'm using for time machine.

2012 Macbk air, with OSX 10.8.5. See my question above. Mavericks won't install on my Air's HD, says that both the HD - AND - the external HD (which has a different name from the laptop HD) are used for time machine backups. I've deleted my time machine plists, restarted, repaired permissions, turned time machine off, repeatedly selected the external drive in time machine preferences. HELP. (Install went perfectly on my desktop Mac, which also has an external HD for time machine).

I need to add that the only place I have the "Backups.backupdb" folder is on my backup external disk, and it's not on my HD    :-(    . If it were, I'd delete it!

  • Suck, my iMac have been under repair for 8 months.

This iMac is exactly a virgin... I have never used it for 1 hour.
It have been repaired for several times.
I think this iMac feels so cold in Apple repair center, because it is always freezing...
It is still under repair now.

    It is exactly true.
I just called the Apple call center and repair/maintenance center in Taiwan 5 hours ago.
No good soultion for the defect of this iMac.
Certainly, I have the online reapir history in the repair center (the last repair no: 1790512).
I sent this iMac for the latest reapir in 2011/10/26 , and it is still in the reapir center now.

  • Insulation Material for Time Capsule PSU Repair

    Hello
I have on of the Time Capsule with an broken PSU. Because Apple has no Extended Repair I decided to repair it myself.
It was no problem to fix the electronic parts of the PSU. I replaces 2 Caps and the TC works fine. Now I need to refit it again in the Case. My problem is that the black Insulation of the PSU was so porous that it broke in a dozen pieces.
Now I looking for an alternative material that I can use. I am afraid that when I close the TC the PSU will shorten with the Logic Board or the Aluminium Bottom Case. I was looking for "Mica Isolation Material" but nobody could supply me with it. Is their another material?
Does someone knows what Tempurature will be in the PSU (Celsius). I found this value nowhere in the NET
Pls. Help me to fit my TC together.
    Regards
    Gérard

The correct plastic is Mylar film..
But what I use is the highest quality and thickest overhead transparency film for color photocopy or lasers.. you can still easily purchase it in office suppliers.. I have a stack of HP one.. it is not quite as thick as the original material so I would double it up over the hot section of the supply. Use the old RF shield which is still ok as it is a metal coated plastic that doesn't go brittle.
If you log onto my website I have instructions there for repairing the power supply including the film.
    https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/apple-time-capsule-repair-type2
I have added the printer outline file to the bottom.. I print it through a standard b/w laser onto the color film. That gives you an accurate outline to cut around.
You could probably use B/W film instead but I found the colour film is thicker and higher grade.
I have both a pages and pdf version.. the problem with pdf is it resizes and it is essential that it print at exactly 100%.
The internal temperature of the supply is up to around 80degC to the hotspots in the supply.. main retifier diode.
    See the infra-red shots here. https://sites.google.com/site/lapastenague/a-deconstruction-of-routers-and-modem s/apple-time-capsule-repair/apple-time-capsule-fan-mod/infra-red-pictures-of-tim e-capsule
But Chris has a shot of the TC supply opened.. not just the outside case temperature.
    http://www.fackrell.me.uk/page4/page4.html
He has a peak temperature of 70C.. with the cover off.. so you can easily go another 10C with covers on.. anyway I think you should assume 80C as peak spot temperature on the covers.  (Chris calls the hotest item a regulator but it is a diode in standard case you see regulator).
Colour laser film is rated to much higher temperature than this.. (fuser temp in the laser is up to 200C) but I have tested long term and it will become brittle same as the original. That is no problem as it is easy to print any number of copies.

  • Currently have house wide wireless network and using external HD (USB) for time machine. HD broken.  would Time capsule work with current routers etc or make them redundant?

I currently have a large house wide wireless network and I am using a dedicated Buffalo HD with USB for time machine.  The HD has gone bad and can't be repaired. I am thinking of replacing it with a Time Capsule.  Will this fit in with my current routers etc, render them redundent ?   I THOUGHT THAT THE HD I BOUGHT WAS OF GOOD QUAILTY BUT IT HAS BROKEN AFTER 2 YEARS. HOW LONG CAN ONE HOPE FOR A TIME CAPSULE TO LIVE (USING QUALITY SURGE DEVICES ETC) ?  Does one need to backup the backups?
ALSO: Is ther e any way to back up from Time Machine off site ( mobile me etc) in case the house burns down?

    Steve M. wrote:
I know I should have redundant backups and should probably have a second external HD and eventually will.
    Yes, that's best.
But for now, if I partition (I'm assuming I should) a new 1 TB external HD, how big should I make the TM partition vs. the SD partition at this point assuming I have under 100 GB on my internal Mac HD? Is this a feasible way of doing things here in the near term.
Your best bet is to make your TM partition 2-3 times the size of the amount of data you anticipate backing-up. Put it first on the drive; that way, later on you can delete the partition below it, expand the TM partition, and make a new, smaller partition for SD (or use the whole drive). See #1, #3, #5 and #6 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum, for details.
By the way, any recommendations on which peripheral HDs to consider? I was very surprised on a recent visit to my local Apple Store that they have a large stock of WD My Studio drives. I mentioned to an Apple sales person that I had always heard WDs were kind of a no-no among Mac users but she assured me the current crop of them were much improved. Any comment on that??
Most any drive will work with Macs, and Time Machine.
If you're going to put a "bootable clone" on it, be sure it's a bootable drive. Most PPC Macs can boot only from FireWire; most Intels can boot from F/W or USB. But some Western Digitals won't boot a Mac. Their list of which ones should and +should not+ boot: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1787. But note the disclaimer that they don't support it +*at all.+*.
In addition, many of them have a built-in sleep mode that cannot be disabled, and sometimes interferes with Time Machine backups: http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=1376

  • What security products are suggested for scrubbing rootkits from a Mac? There are good articles on similar repair for PCs and it makes me want to see if I can save this machine. It's in forensic recovery right now so I myself have not done anything yet.

What security products are suggested for scrubbing rootkits from a Mac? There are good articles on similar repairs for other makes online. I would like to investigate whether a machine can be truly scrubbed or if it's best to retire it. I haven't done anything yet as it is a candidate for more extensive forensic recovery.
Also, I am not sure if various malicious spoofing and cloaking tricks (making Wi-Fi appear off when it is on, hiding unauthorized sharing/remote access, falsifying System Preferences preference panes, etc.) are resolved by a thorough drive erase or are more similar to APTs?
Finally, is there any emerging information regarding APT hiding places other than the recovery partition? I have heard mention of the EFI, for example, but it seems unproven and unlikely. Some people have also mentioned the RAM.
This is an upsetting topic to some people, including me, so I appreciate circumspect, measured responses. Thanks! And don't try to answer all my questions if you really just want to comment or answer one. All thoughts are appreciated.

    Hi, Lincoln,
A straightforward question. You are correct in recognizing the difference between tentative conclusion and certainty. Here are our main reasons:
    1. Incoming items noted on the console (or console sub logs) and Activity Monitor after defenses are overcome, and which are brought in by an unwelcome remote user, often have a process name and the word "kit." (Bear with me.) We soon observe the process is under attack, from terminal evidence and soon, decreased or lost functionality of the process. The terminal generally reports alteration of specific kernel behaviors. A simple example (that may or may not be accompanied by kernel changes and may simply alter permissions) is modifying Disk Utility such that key uses are unavailable. You can see how an attacker might value disabling partition views, mounting and permission repair. In retrospect, DU might not be a root alteration. I was thinking that its relation to fsck flagged it as a possible ring 0 item. I may need to know core parameters of a good example to pick strong ones.
    2. Incoming folders hidden for possible later use contained bundles of similar root kits, including some not applicable to Macs. From what I have read from reasonably credible sources, root kits are sold and traded both singly and in bundles.
    3. Root kits are a logical next choice for our attackers, as various prior techniques hindered us but did not paralyze us.
    4. One of the most authoritative articles I found was about PCs not Macs. I noted the assertion, undocumented, that an estimated one million computers are infected by root kit manipulations, and underscored that the kits can be used by people with low computer skills.
    5. MacAfee lists root kits (by description, not name) as a top pop five threat prediction in the coming year, though again, the emphasis is on PCs.
Linc, I am trying to show a spectrum of observations and info that have shaped my thinking. To retrieve better captured evidence requires significant legwork at this time, but it is something I am willing to do if you can be patient. Understand this long attack has been like a natural disaster to us.
I have not linked a few articles of interest because I forget if that's allowed. If so, I'd be glad to.
After reviewing this partial answer, you may form another hypothesis. If so, please share it. I am comfortable with my position but not clinging to it.
Thanks for your interest. Looking forward to your thoughts.
Oh, yeah: some material is out for analysis, so we should have credible opinions pretty soon. Not positive exactly when.

  • HT203176 my computer hangs frequently - rolling beach ball - apparently some endless loops - I have repaired the permissions countless times but the problem continues - the faulty permissions include java virtual machine and language libraries

I get the rolling beach ball frequently when using a browser -I have repaired the permissions a number of times - each time I do this - the same issues show up-  language libraries, java virtual machine etc - after a restart the btowser works for awhile and then hangs again - i trashed both Chrome and Firefox and am now using Safari and Opera - neither of which work very fast and I still get a frozen screen - rolling beach ball - have to force quit.On the activity monitor it shows that the  browser I am using has several hangs.
Aside from reinstalling everything - is  there a fix for this?

Those Permissions errrors will keep appearing. They are not errors; ignore them. Your problem has nothing to do with Permissions repair. Many possible causes, one of which may be A-V. Do you have any A-V installed?
What does Disk Utility show for SMART Status for the drive? Verify the Disk.
Open Activity Monitor>CPU tab. Anything hogging the CPU when the slowdowns occur? Switch to the Memory tab. What does it show for free and inactive? Also, Page ins, Page outs and Swap used?'
How many applications open concurrently when this happens?
How much drive free space? You should maintain at least around 20-30GB.

I changed my AppleID a long time ago to an email that I no longer use and I have updates for apps that I can't update because my old email is filled in to where i sign in and it wont let me change it to my new one???

The problem with those two apps is that they are supposed to be in your Apple ID and you didn't set up the Mac properly/completely when you got it.
You might try deleteing them and using OS X Recovery to install them again.

  • I have partitioned my time capsule, but I can't get it to work as a Time Machine back up and permanent media server for both mac and PC. What format do I need to partition the drive to so that it works for both mac and windows and so that it will be visab

I have partitioned my time capsule, as I want part of it to act as a media server for both mac and windows. However I don't know what format that I need to partition it to. I also can't make it a permanently accesible drive. I want to restore the drive to the original format (which I don't know) and start again and re-partition the drive in a format that can be used for media by both mac and PC and for time machine back-ups and make the media part of it permanetly accesible so I can add and acccess my files.
    Thanks

You are mixing up a couple of things here.
The TC drive cannot be partitioned without removing it.. did you do that?
If you partition it you must use a Mac disk utility and use the HFS+ ie standard Mac format. And GUID partition table not windows type.
You can select erase disk in the airport utility.. that will take the disk back to original format. No partitions. TC is deliberately not partitioned as it is not a media server.. it is a backup device for TM. Over time .. the disk will be filled with TM backups so you have a long history of file changes to your computer.
There is no media server in the TC.. it is merely disk storage.. you can serve files from it to a media device.. but the TC itself is dumb as dumb.
Now the actual format of the drive is irrelevant to the PC.. The TC offers SMB file services to the network. You can copy files to and from the TC as if it was a local disk without caring one iota about the format. The TC handles that .. it is not a local disk .. it is a network drive.
Although you cannot partition the TC. you can still copy files to it.. this does have implications for TM.. but as long as there is plenty of free space should not be a major issue.
You can create a disk image via the disk utility in a Mac.. and as stated you can create partitions if you do it on a Mac with the disk directly connected which means breaking warranty if any exists on the TC.
