I have snow leopard with bootcamp what will happen if I create a new partition and install Lion

query as subject line - I was planning to create a new partition using disk utility and installing lion on that - I am aware Lion will Create a recovery partition in addition - so is it possible to have Snow with it's Bootcamp and Lion with it's recovery on my imac purchased jan 2012?
Subsequent question although I purchased Lion from the mac store can I jump straight to Mountain Lion (if I purchase it) from Snow leopard?

If you plan to create a third partition, then you will lose control over your Boot Camp partition and ability to boot Windows. You cannot have three partitions as you desire.
You can upgrade the Snow Leopard system to Lion or Mountain Lion. You can obtain another HDD and install Lion or Mountain Lion on the external drive.
Yes, you can purchase and download Mountain Lion to upgrade the Snow Leopard system.

  • I have a MacPro with 10.7.2 installed. I want to create a new partition and install 10.5. When I put in the install DVD and restart the computer, it does not restart. What can I do?

I just purchased a  MacPro with 10.7.2 installed. I want to install 10.5 on a separate partition.
I created the partition with no issues, now when I put in the 10.5 install DVD and restart the computer, it does not restart.
All I get is a grey screen. no icons, no nothing. I have to shut the computer down.
I really need to do this. I plan on upgrading to FCP X, but I still need to finish some old projects that were done with FCP 7. I need the different boot drives

    Mac Pro - Mid 2010
    Processor  2 x 2.66 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 ECC
Graphics  ATI Radeon HD 5870 1024 MB
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 (11C74)
This is a brand new machine that I just purchased from Apple. It was delivered yesterday
The old computer is an old PowerMac G5, but my OS X install disc is a retail version of 10.5.
I also tried the OS X 10.5 install disc that came with my MacBook Pro (2.6 Ghz Intel Core 2 Dual).
Same issue - nothing but a grey screen when the system tries to boot from the DVD

  • How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp

How can I create a new partition to install Windows 7 by not using Bootcamp?

If you want to dualboot you have to use boot camp i think. I think you have already a full disc and cannot make another partition I'm I right?
Your question seems a bit blurry so I'm giving you a general tip here.
If you want to just try the beta you can always use Sun's "Virtualbox".

  • What will happen if I pull the new pages out of my applic folder and try to use the 09 pages?

I'm tired of fighting the new (less functional) Pages.  I created a 16 page newsletter in the 09Pages version but when I opened it today it had been transferred into the newer version and It had lost a bunch of data I had designed into it.  I had gotten instruction from an Apple support person on how to tell it to open in the old version so I quit the new version and opened the old one but it's not working according to her directive.  It keeps telling me I have to download a newer version to open it.  What would happen if I pull the new version out of the applications folder .... will that disable it temporarily and allow me to use only the old version?

Using Get Info to change all documents to open with Pages 4.3 doesn't work. It will work on individual files, but that could be a lot of files to reset.
If you want to keep Pages 5 there are a couple of methods to make Pages 4.3 the default. Just make sure you've reverted or converted any files to iWork '09 format first. If you don't want to keep Pages 5 you can delete it.
    Method 1:
This was first posted by another user in this forum. I can't remember who or when. It has been "fine-tuned" by Peter Breis & I added a note for what works for me.
    1. Move any new iWork apps in another clearly labelled folder. I created a new folder in Applications & named it iWork 13.
    2. Menu > Apple > System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy > drag the above folder into the list
    3. Move the new iWork folder into the trash (temporarily)
    4. Select any Pages file in Finder > Menu > Info (cmd+i) > Open with: > Pages '09 > Change all
    5. Retrieve the new iWork folder from the trash (right-click > Put back)
Pages 5 should no longer appear as a default App, and you won't have to keep a copy in a separate drive or dmg.
Important: Make a note of where and how Pages was installed for the next App Store update and temporarily move it back there before putting it away again in the folder concealed from Spotlight.
    Method 2:
This is the one I used based on several posts here shortly after Pages 5 was released. I now use method 1 because I find it easier to apply updates when Apple releases them.
    1. After I installed the new iWork updates I created a folder on an external drive & named it "other applications."
    2. I then moved the new iWork apps to this folder & renamed the applications Keynote 6, Pages 5 & Numbers 3.
I have icons for two versions of Pages & Numbers (I rarely use Keynote) in my Dock. Even with two versions of Pages & Numbers running, double-clicking an existing file opens in Pages 4.3 or Numbers 2.3. This should also keep the Mac App Store from nagging you to update.

  • One itunes account, two ipads (no cloud). What will happen when I sync the new ipdad the first time?

My original iPAD is full of pictures, music, books and apps and was recently synced (iOS7) to my PC.
Just bought a new iPAD (Mini), and not sure what will happen if I sync it to my PC. Will the failry empty Mini wipe out all my content on the PC? or can I just select what from my PC I wat to sync to this new iPAD?

No, syncing an additional iDevice to a computer will have no affect on the original.
    Syncing is per device.
Connect the new device, select the content desired to sync and sync.

  • Installing Lion on from Snow Leopard with Bootcamp

    Is it problem?

How to regain NTSF access to bootcamp partition from MAC OSX Lion. (One user's experience)
    1) After doing the upgrade (not a clean install) of MAC OSX Lion, Launching the Windows Partition worked just fine from the Startup Manager when choosing Windows 7.
    2) The problem seems to be that the Bootcamp volume is not mounting when MacOSX is launched due to 3rd party software for NTFS.
I was previously using Macfuse and Texera's NTFS-3G software in Snow Leopard to mount and access my NTFS formatted partition.
THE SOLUTION for OSX LION so far (Requires payed upgrade):
    1) uninstall MacFuse.
    2) uninstall NTFS-3G.
Acquire and install Fuse4X (this replaces MacFuse).
    http://fuse4x.org/
Upgrade to Tuxera NTFS (15 day free trial) / Approximately $36 for upgrade.
    Good luck!
If anyone finds a free/opensource solution please post!

  • I am going to upgrade from leopard to snow leopard ( I just purchased the snow leopard disk today).  Will I be able to keep my data and third party programs after installation?

    Hi Apple Community,
This is my first time using the Apple Support Communities.  After installing/upgrading to snow leopard from disk will I lose my data and my third party programs like Adobe Indesign?
    Thank you in advance,
    John

    John... welcome to ASC,
You could if you don't backup everything to an external drive first. Always backup your important data before upgrading from one Mac OS to the next.

  • Can i create a disk partition and install SL onto it from my disks I got with my iMac

I want to start learning how to use the Terminal and how to start inputting and outputting data via the Terminal.  I thought that I could create a small partition on my hard drive and then install Snow Leopard onto that partition (so that while I was learning how to use Terminal commands I would not wreck anything.)
It then occurred to me that by doing this I would also learn how to install OS X.
    Can I do this?
Does the disks I got with my iMac have a limited number of installs?  Because if they do I don't want to use them up in case I have to reinstall at any point in the future.
Do those disks have a full version of OS X Snow Leopard on them, or are they just for repairing the version on my system?
If I was to create a partition, when I delete that partition will I automatically get back the space?
Is what I want to do hard?
Can someone please give me some guidance before I begin doing this?
    Many thanks
    Jason

The OS X Install Disc that came with your computer is just that a full licensed copy of OS X for your system, it can be installed as many times as you would like but it will ONLY work on your machine. The only limitation to those discs that I'm aware of is they are machine specific.
My suggestion would be to get an external HD and use the Install Disc to install OS X on the external. Don't get a cheap USB drive, get the fastest drive (at the moment that would be Firewire 800) you can get. Drives I'd recommend are Lacie Quadra d2 series, G-Tech G-Series and OWC (www.macsales.com) Mercury Elite Pro series. This would be a much wiser strategy than partitioning  your internal drive, that way if you real create a major mess it won't affect your internal HD.

  • Having the same problem with Aol not sending my mail and getting error message. If I delete this account, what will happen? This is on my iPad, and I also have a gmail and Yahoo account.

This happened after I was hacked.

If you delete that account from your iPad, all messages from it will be removed. You can then go back into Settings, then Mail, Contacts, Calendars and 'Add Account' to add it back onto your iPad.

  • If I buy an upgrade phone online, Does it have to be activated? What Will happen to my old phone?

Okay. So My mother's phone is eligible for an upgrade and I won't get one for another year. My Galaxy S Stratosphere won't work at all. I need a new phone.
If we order the Galaxy S3 online with her upgrade, Do we have to activate it on her plan?
Once It gets here, I could just put my 4G LTE Sim card (Verizon) In it and it would work.
But would My mother's phone still work for her??? She has a basic phone but we are on a Share everything Plan so I don't think It would affect her data...
Help?? I need to know if my plan would work at all.

You can use your mother's upgrade eligible line to purchase the S3 at a discount.  Her contract will be extended for 2 years. It MAY need to be activated briefly on her line, or you can accept the terms and conditions and activate it to your line without involving hers - it depends on how you make the purchase (online or in-store, and what type of store - corporate or third party or authorized reseller).
In any case your Mom can continue to use her phone on her line.

  • What will happen if i let windows 7 scan and fix my ipod?

Everytime that i plug in my ipod into my laptop lately windows 7 wants to scan and fix it. I know not to unplug my ipod without waiting for it to discconnect first so i know that's not the problem.I have been using this ipod on this laptop since i bought my laptop a year and half ago. I just started having the promblem with windows 7 wanting to scan it almost a week ago.I also update my itunes whenever the newest ipod comes out. My ipod also works just fine. What could be wrong with my ipod that it wants to scan and fix it? If i allow it to scan and fix it will it delete all of my music?

Maybe there is a setting in Windows that will prevent it from doing the scan.  But it is possible that the iPod's storage has data corruption.
If there are songs on the iPod that are not in your iTunes library, you are taking a risk because iPods can become broken or lost (or need a Restore because of data corruption).  Doing a "scan and fix" now may or may not do any harm, but you are likely to lose that music eventually.  If you want info on off-loading songs from an iPod, you can post back.
If all of the songs on the iPod are in your iTunes library, you should have iTunes do a Restore.  The Restore button is on the iPod's Summary screen in iTunes.  That will erase the iPod, reinstall its software, and set it to default settings. You can then re-sync everything back on the iPod.

  • What will happen if i set as new iphone?

my brother's iphone is already registered to the laptop. I planned to attach my iphone to his itunes. it was said that if i could set as new iphone. what would possibly happen?

Each device can only sync with one iTunes library - and that content of the iTunes library will sync.
If you decide to change the iTunes library the phone was orginially synced with, it will erase the 'sync' data and re-sync with the new library.
    The phone itself isn't erased.
For example, If I only sync Music, if I change iTunes library, it would erase my Music, and re-sync with the new Music from the new iTunes Library.
    Hope that helps

  • What will happen when I plug my new iPod in?

I got a new iPod video and I had an iPod mini before, if I plug in my new iPod, will it erase my library on my computer? If it does erase my library, how can I transfer my music from my old ipod to my new one?

No, it won't erase your library on your computer if you connect a new iPod. Rather, it will ask you if you want to associate the new iPod with this library. Click 'yes' and it will load your iPod with that music.

  • Install Two Snow Leopard with boot camp

Has anyone tried to install on the same Mac two copies of Snow Leopard with bootcamp?
I want to keep one for general activities and one dedicated and tweaked for audio purposes.
    Thanks to all!

    You have a Mac Pro.

    http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp
You can install Windows on its own drive; you can have Mac OS on same drive or different.
You just can't have Windows OS on a partition that has higher partition number than 4, which includes hidden partitions also.
I keep Windows on its own hard drive. Then do what you want with your 4-5 internal hard drive bays.
