im now in japan and i have softbank SIM card. And i want to order an unlocked iphone 3G from australia. can i use it?

All supported carriers require a data plan with the iPhone.
If your carrier will permit it, you can put a Micro-SIM in the phone that does not have a data plan. Make sure, however, that you turn off mobile (cellular) data in settings or you're going to potentially rack up some serious charges. Not to mention tha fact that you are in effect, crippling the phone.
If you're in the US, attempting to use AT&T, they will automatically add a data plan to the account when they detect you are using an iPhone without one.

yes you can if there are GSM carriers in Mongolia. If your phone breaks, you will need to send it to somone you know in the US to bring it to Apple for repair.

Sim Card - Can I use it in another phone?

I just upgraded from a 3G to a 4 and everything is working. I was wondering if I can pop the sim card out of the 4 and put it into the 3g and have the 3g work? Basically, I am thinking if I go to a place I may lose or damage the phone (today I will be timing a swim meet), I would put the sim into the 3G. If anything happened to the phone, no big loss. When I got home, I would put the sim back into the 4 and be back to that phone.

You can also get a hand punch on flea-Bay to punch/convert a regular SIM card down to micro SIM size for the iPhone 4. The resulting micro-SIM can be restored to full size with the converter card noted above.
I easily swop micro cards into my 3G phone this way.

Yes, your SIM Card is compatible with the iPhone 4, but it will have to be cut to size of Micro SIM to fit in iPhone 4. Your Carrier can easily transfer your # to a Micro SIM for you. If in the US go to ATT store and they can provide you with Micro SIM Card.

i have a problem with my IPHONE 4 , it seems i cannot activate it since i do not have a valid sim yet, i will have it until de 10th of january but i want to use the other apps, liker ipod and so on. I dont need the server to use the apps but still it wont even let me acess the main menu it stays on the configuration screen says that i dont have a valid sim and it wont continue.

Wait until you get a valid SIM card. The iPhone requires a SIM card for activation, but that SIM card does not need to be active. Borrow a SIM from another phone or from a friend to activate the device.

I am being deployed and had my account paused (ATT) untill I return. My service is currently off. The ATT rep said that I would need to take the sim card out when updating any apps or it might revert back and lock the phone again. You need to connect the phone to iTunes and then try activating it from there and restoring it as new.
If you have further problems and especially as the iPhone you have bought is second hand, it could be that it is not unlocked. Are you sure that it is? If not, then you'll need to speak to the person that you purchased it from.

Your iPhone will include a new SIM card that must be activated with O2 even with a pay-as-you-go plan. The SIM card is "married" the iPhone's IMEI number as part of the activation process.
Once activated, you should be able to use your iPhone's SIM card with your Blackberry, but you can't do this in reverse. Using an activated SIM card from another phone with a carrier locked iPhone, and the iPhone is sold in the UK as carrier locked with O2 only.

I'm trying to find out if I buy an unlocked Pay as You Go iPhone in one of the various EU countries selling manufacturer unlocked units (France, Germany, Italy, etc) , will it work in each country if I switch to that country's telecom's Sim cards.
The blogs and iPhone dedicated websites are full of opinions but no one seems to have definitive experience doing this. Some users say it should work, others say the EU iPhones are unlocked for the specific country of purchase but will not work with another country's telecom's Sim cards. The Apple Stores will not confirm any usage outside their own country. Similar response from the relevant telecoms. The Apple Support pages do not make any reference to cross country usage beyond roaming.
A privately unlocked iPhone is an option but I prefer an official unlock so there are no hassles. Not looking for opinions here - can find more than enough on the internet. I'm looking for actual first hand experience using these officially unlocked iPhones between countries.

Thanks for the correction on the relevant carriers. Looking at the European options: Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, and Czech Republic should work based on details from Apple's carrier list.
