Your balance should show to the left of account id at the top of the iTunes store page on your computer's iTunes. You can also check it by clicking on that id, or doing Store > View My Account, which should show your account balance and let you view your payment info

Among other things iTunes uses your credit card to confirm that you are a resident of the same country as the store you are using. Occasionally it may ask for you to confirm the details and "prove" the card by putting on a holding charge which it later releases. If you have credit in the store that should be applied to any purchases first, even if iTunes asks you to confirm your details. Your listed credit in the window can become out of date if you use more than one computer or device to make purchases. Signing out of your account, then back in, should refresh the balance.

No. You need to ask Apple to reset your security questions; ways of contacting them include phoning AppleCare and asking for the Account Security team, clicking here and picking a method for your country, and filling out and submitting this form.
They wouldn't be security questions if they could be bypassed without Apple verifying your identity.

If you don't have a rescue email address (you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions) then you will need to contact iTunes Support or Apple to get them reset.

Go to: Apple Express Lane;
Under Product Categories choose iTunes;
Then choose iTunes Store;
Then choose Account Management;
Press Continue;
Now choose iTunes Store Security and answer the bullet questions, then click Continue;
Sign in with your Apple ID and press Continue;
Under Contact Options fill out the information and advise iTunes that you would like your security/challenge questions reset;
Click Send.
You should get a response within 24 hours by email.

I have followed all the steps on the support website. i logged in, went to manage my apple id and clicked on security questions. To my surprise there was no option to click "reset my security questions", what can I do? I have an alternate email provided I just cant find the link to reset the questions!

The reset link will only show if you have a rescue email address on your account - an alternate email address is not a rescue email address, and you won't be able to add one until you can answer 2 of your questions, you will need to contact iTunes Support / Apple to get the questions reset.
