I have T410S, advice in upgrading monitor

I have a T410S with the stock, motherboard videocard.
I want to ugrade monitors and have been eyeing those extremely nice 27 inch 2560-by-1440 resolution monitors.
But my question is will I be wasting my money because of the hardware limitations of my laptop?
If so, what would you recommend?

    ok,
    At this little tutorial here:
    http://www.developer.com/tech/article.php/610011
    It says
"The Document interface is the content model for Swing text components. Every Swing text component has an instance of Document associated with it. The Document contains both the content for its component as well as any style information for the rendering of the content. All content is stored in the Document's Element array. Style information is stored in each Element as an AttributeSet. We'll get into AttributeSets in the next article, when we discuss styled text components. "
    Mainly concentrating on :
All content is stored in the Document's Element array. Style information is stored in each Element as an AttributeSet.
This would indicate that each time a new attribute is applied to something that it is stored as a separate String in an array, along with the attribute relating to it, would it ?
    I've looked here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/javax/swing/JTextPane.html#getParagraphAttributes()
    And here :
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/javax/swing/text/Document.html
But still cannot figure out a way to do this, I presume I must get at the Document 'array', and if I had this everything would be fine.
Should I run through every single charactor in the 'editable' JTextPane, check its attribute and add it my my own special made class?, and pass this class to 'non-editable / viewable-only' JTextPane ?
Any opinions would be very helpful.

  • Connecting the T410s to an external monitor

    1) Excuse the ignorant question but how would you connect the T410s to an external monitor?  The T410s has a DisplayPort port, but what if the monitor does not have a DisplayPort port but an HDMI port?
    2) Which leads into my second question.  How would I connect the T410s to two external monitors?  I guess whatever the answer is to the above question, but connect some kind of a splitter coming out of the T410s DisplayPort port?
    3) And lastly, take a look at this link...
    http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/controller/e/web/LenovoPortal/en_US/catalog.workflow:category.details?current-catalog-id=12F0696583E04D86B9B79B0FEC01C087&current-category-id=19C791A03AF24034A0011B825513BCED&tabname=Gallery
Once you get there, click on T400s below the thumbnails.  If that long link I pasted does not work right, it is the T-series gallery on Lenovo's site.  In one of the pictures, it shows the T400s connected to two external monitors, but does not say how.  They brag at how you can export 2560x1600 to two monitors without the use of a dock.  Is this possible even though the T410s video card tops out at 1440x900?
    Thank you.

Thank you, lead_org.  You've been very helpful.  Last 2 questions hopefully.
    1) Regarding the use of DisplayPort on the Mini Dock Plus, since DisplayPort transmits audio as well as video (unlike the old style VGA which only sent video), if I connected the Mini Dock Plus to the HDMI port of my monitor (using a DP-to-HDMI adapter of course) would I lose audio out coming out of the green miniplug port on the mini dock, since the system might assume I want all audio to go through the DisplayPort cable?  I have seperate external speakers I want to use and not the ones on the monitor.
    2) Do you lose any quality when you connect to an external monitor using a Mini Dock, as opposed to connecting directly from the T410s itself?  The reason I'm asking is that some people claimed that using the green miniplug audio port on the dock generates a much lower volume than if they were to plug the speakers directly into the laptop instead.

  • HT5037 I have downloaded the Library Upgrader (twice!) but Spotlight can't find it and there are no instructions here on how to use it.Kludge!

I am trying to use my existing iPhoto Library with my new MacBook Pro, and I keep getting a message "To open your library with this version of iPhoto, it first needs to be prepared." I then go to HT5037, which tells me to download the iPhoto Library Upgrader. I do that and install the Upgrader, which then appears nowhere on my HD and can't be found by Spotlight, but even if it were, nowhere are there instructions for using the phantom upgrader. Anyone have any advice (other than switch to Lightroom)?

It's in Applications/Utilities. Double click on it to run it.

I found a solution that worked for me.  Here is what I did and where I found it.
"Looks like I tracked down the problem, it worked for me so I hope this works for everyone else experiencing problems.  Go to your Task Manager and locate the program APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push)..... if you see this executing terminate the program and then startup iTunes and it should come up fine.  You will see afterwards that APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) starts back up but this is fine as long as iTunes has already started.
I tried playing both music and syncing up my iPhone with no problems.  Note if you shutdown iTunes again you will have to terminate the process APSDaemon.exe (Apple Push) again.  Haven't had time to see what in the world Apple Push is but this appears to have corrected the problem so that you can at least use iTunes and sync any device that needs to be synced.
    Hope that helps everyone!"

  • Advice about dual monitor, "newbie" friendly WMs

    Need some advice:
Just got another monitor for my laptop (a samsung 23.5'' 2333sw), and I'm trying to tweak my monitor setup. What are the best panels/windowmanagers for dual monitors? Like right now I'm using compiz + tint2 and when I change workspaces, both monitors change workspaces. When I open a program, it appears in the taskbar on both monitors. I'd like them to be more independant (but still be able to share windows between them, so separate xorg files are out). Awesome kept things separate automatically, which brings me to my next question....
I don't want to use awesome (although it handles dual monitors exactly how I like, with no tweaking) because I'm having extended family stay over for a few weeks and I'd like to make my computer as user friendly as possible (part of me wants to do some linux converting). I'm talking totally mouse-based. OSX-esque dock, the works. Guys have any advice for the best window manager/apps to appeal to windows/mac users? Not that I want to make a windows clone. I just want something inviting, intuitive, with a low learning curve.
Part of me is thinking of maybe just tweaking awesome so it includes titlebars, is always floating, and has a dock. Since it handles dual monitors well right now, this might be the path of least resistance.
    Thoughts?

That's a very interesting topic. The program lxrandr is able to control the behaviour of plugged monitors but obviously it is only able to display the same content on both screens.
so are there some lightweight programs that can differ between the content like e.g. gnome is able?

  • Advice on upgrade needed

    Hi,
I need to upgrade my machine, and would be very grateful for some advice from the more knowledgeable.
I want my laptop to be faster and more powerful, and to support at least Tiger OS, and preferably Leopard. I think this means I need a faster processor, possibly more RAM? I also want the best wireless capacity available - at the moment, I have an Airport Extreme card. Finally, I need a new battery.
What I'm really asking is, will it be cheaper and more sensible to have my existing laptop upgraded in line with the above, or should I sell it and buy a new one? Either way, I would very much appreciate advice on how best to go about it. I live in London if that makes any difference, and I know very little about computers (as you can probably tell), so there is no question of me tinkering with the laptop myself.
    Hope you can help. Thanks!

Hi, hazzabamboo, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your Powerbook can run Tiger or Leopard as is, though in either case you'd benefit substantially from additional RAM. You can install up to 2GB. Its processor can't be upgraded at all, so you don't need to worry about that. Your Airport Extreme card should provide wireless capability sufficient for almost any needs, but if it isn't doing so, please tell us what's unsatisfactory about it and we'll see if we can help you remedy the problem.
If your question has been prompted by encountering software updates or upgrades that require more recent OS versions than 10.3.9, then you can meet those requirements fairly easily and inexpensively with more RAM and new OS installer discs. But if you want to run software or peripheral devices that require a faster processor or an Intel processor, then upgrading to a newer Mac is the only way forward.

  • Advice to external monitor for desktop usage of my MacBook (early 2008)

    Hi,
I've a MacBook early 2008, and I'd like to use it at home "as a desktop". My idea is to close the macbook when I'm at home, plug an external monitor and use bluetooth mouse and keyboard.
What about external monitor? I don't want to extend desktop, but I want to replace, at home, macbook display with monitor.
Do you have any advice to give me?
    Bye

You can use basically any monitor (short of a 30" LCD) with your MacBook. Common connectors are DVI, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort. Check what you have on your MacBook and buy a monitor that has that connector. (Most MacBooks came with a VGA or DVI adapter, I don't remember which.)
As for your computer going to sleep, it's not a bug, it's a feature. Press any key on an external keyboard while your computer is hooked up to an external monitor, and the laptop should wake back up, recognize the display, and be ready to use.

  • Slow speeds, can I have some advice...

Firstly, I have the Westell 9100EM15 router from verizon and I live in the tampa area.   Please let me know if getting a different one could make a difference.  It's like 2+ years old.
Anyway, I'm getting slow speeds considering I have the 35/35 plan.  Youtube videos buffer slowly, and I only get around 3mps for torrents.  Can someone explain why Youtube videos won't basically load instantly?  Why don't I at least get 20mps on torrents?  Note, that I'm using a wireless adapter for my main computer, not wired, which obviously probably makes a difference, but when I used wired, I NEVER got past 3mps when I had 25/10.  I cannot used wired anymore anyway since lightning killed my ethernet port.  I will buy a pci port if have to, however.
I did buy and hook up a linksys e12000, but the speeds were slower than the stock router.  I had to return it.  Common, I just don't understand.  It's wireless N.  My 6+ year old linksys wireless G router that I used to bypass the verizon router was faster.  At the moment, I'm using the verizon router, which for some reason just started to be faster than the linksys G.
I'm thinking of buying a Medialink Wireless N Router.  It's the number 1 on amazon, but I'm not sure if it'll help.  Maybe  dual band?  I don't know what to do.  Does anyone have any advice?

Like many others like you, I don't believe there is a fix at your end. At one time Verizon use to say your speed never changed because you have a dedicated line and not sharing a line like Comcast so when your neighbors got on your speed won't change but that isn't part of their ad anymore because we are all attached to a hub and the more people that are on it, the slower our speed will be. Also, there are millions who stream Netflix and Blockbuster over the Verizon lines and the hubs are unable to take that so we in return get slow speed. There is nnot a lot anyone can do about it. I was told it was at my end but with 5 computers(only one on at a time) I did a test and got another router and hooked it up to one of my other computers and tried the speed test thing but it was just as slow. So, when you are tols it is at your end, forget it, it is not. I am suppose to get 10Mbps but between 6pm and 1:00am I am lucky to get 1Mbps. Verizon just needs to add more hubs and the problem is solved. We can't get FIOS in our area but as I can see, it too slows down during certain hours. The only other explaination is at certain times we get capped so the hub does not burn out. I have learned to live around it but most people depend on that speed and should not have to go so slow when the speed is very much needed. There is no solution yet but I am sure Verizon gets enough complaints and will soon fix the problem. Hang in there, they will have to upgrade and I am sure they are doing that now before they lose their customer. But don't let some out source tell you it is at your end, because it isn't.

  • Need advice on upgrade from Snowleopard to Lion on MacBk Pro (15" late 2008)

I want to be able to synch my calendar on new iPhone, home MacBook Pro and office PC (with MS Office)... and I think I have figured out that I need to get Lion on my Mac instead of Snow Leopard.  Are there things I need to do to make this upgrade actually work?  I am a big user, but not so much a smart Mac user... kind of new to it.. advice appreciated.  pitfalls or suggestions... any reasons not to do it?

    Sara MacApple wrote:
So, do you have any advice about how I can synch my MacBookPro calendar with my iPhone?
Apple has incorporated features like that into iCloud, then restricted that to only users of 10.7 Lion as  leverage. They won't allow iCloud on 10.6 because people wouldn't upgrade. 10.6 runs a lot of expensive previously purchased software that there isn't a upgrade out yet. If people install Lion anyway on older hardware it slows most machines down and that encourages them to buy a new Mac prematurely. So you see what's going on here.
Apple changes stuff way too fast, then they quickly burn their bridges and previous users  behind them in the process. For instance, Apple doesn't support 10.5 at all anymore with security and stabilty updates, and that's a mere 4 year old OS X version.
Not to praise Microsoft, but they do support 10 year old XP still, 5 year old Vista and Windows 7 is going to be supported for at least 10 years or even longer. Windows 8 is going to run Windows 7 software too. So with Windows PC you can run your hardware until it drops dead, buy your software once every 10 years.
Apple has this crazy notion that we all should be replacing our hardware and expensive software on a 3 year basis. When in reality properly taken care of Mac hardware can last a decade easily, I have a XP friend who's Dell desktop is over 10 years old and still works fine.
If your a luxury consumer and just use your Mac for the basics,  can keep up with the 3-4 year expensive hardware and software changes, then buy all means buy a new Mac with Lion and get iCloud and then sync to your iPhone. Use the old Mac as backup for software that isn't ready for 10.7 yet.
If your more a Pro and/or conservative user, perhaps have a heavy investment in software, your machine is working perfectly, have a more longterm objective, then you should consider forgoing the new OS X features until third party software has released Lion compatible versions/updates and then make a decision to upgrade hardware and software at the same time so your workflow continues with the least disturbance.
Apple prefers to cater to the luxury consumer more than the "Pro" market because the luxury consumer can be leveraged to buy hardware on a faster upgrade cycle. The Pro user is trying to make money and therefore thinks more longterm to extract value out of their purchases.
I know this is a long winded answer, but since your machine is 4 years old and Lion will be slow on it, require opening up the machine to install RAM and replace all your software, you might as well buy a new machine to get the feature you want. If your not prepared to buy a new machine, then forgo it and learn to live without the new feature, your machine could last another 4 years easy and by then there might be no more computers, just all tablets or something, because Apple is ALWAYS changing.
If you take a serious look at Lion, you'll realize it's a transitional OSX version, to what exactly and what form of new hardware it will run on (perhaps even Apple's own processors) is a mystery. So Iv'e decided to stay on 10.6 for all the software choices, printers works just fine to, even on my new 2011 Mac and just wait it out and not thrown several thousand dollars away in a mere 3 years for no reason. When Apple gets to wherever they are going and settles down, the software industry catches up, by then my hardware will likely be ready for a upgrade, if I don't like waht Apple is doing, then I will switch to a alternative. But I won't be lead around on a leash and my wallet abused by Apple any longer, they need to grow up and act like a mature computer products company and quit dropping support for older OS X versions.
