I have the very first iPod Nano, and it doesn't work anymore. Can I recycle it or trade it for a newer one?

I got this iPod a really long time ago. And when I pluged it into my computer it doesn't unlock and it doesn't let me turn it off or anything.
I've tried to do the iPod replacement but it says that my iPod isn't a part of it. But my friend has the same kind of iPod as mine and it went through.
Can I trade it in or recycle it for a newer one?

I've tried both pair of headphones I own and nothing and they work on everything else. It can play the songs but nothing is heard unless I play it off the computer. - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode

- If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
- Try another cable
- Try on another computer
- If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

In order to delete or add individual songs from and to your iPod, you'll need to enable 'manual mode' on the device. This will allow you to add and remove exactly the content you desire.

The Very FIrst iPod Classic - Having Issues

So, my brother's iPod keeled over and I told him I'd see what I can do. It's one of the very first iPod classics. They don't even sell these anymore. It's a 20GB metal design from 2004. I figure it's just fried, but I still wanna try. I don't think it died until recently, which is a shame. Even charging for a whole 48 hours, it wont turn on. I've tried resetting it numerous times.
Anyone wanna try and help? Any advice is appreciated.
NOTE: I do realise this is probably pointless since it's so old. I don't expect to fix it. It'd just be cool if I did.

It sounds like a third gen iPod. Does it have four buttons in a horizontal row with a circular wheel below? All of these buttons and the wheel touch sensitive? If so, it's a third gen. If it has a clickwheel and it's 2004, it's a fourth gen.
Sounds like the battery's gone. Just replace it yourself. It's like $30 with a DIY kit.

Launch the Keychain Access application in any of the following ways:

Erasing the device is supposed to erase the passcode which is supposed to allow you to activate the device again. Let it go for the 10 minutes and then see if you can activate it again. You can also try erasing the device again and see what happens.
Go to icloud.com/#find.
If prompted, sign in with your iCloud Apple ID.
Click All Devices at the top of your browser window.
Select the device you want to erase.
Click "Erase [device]" to erase your device and its passcode.
Use the Setup Assistant on your device to restore the most recent backup.
This is what Apple recommends, so you have to trust that it is going to work .....
