I have thumbnails in my library but no enlarged photo

I have yhumbnails in my library but no enlarged photo.....just an exlamation mark!  Have the photos been lost?  Is there someway to restore the image?

The ! turns up when iPhoto loses the connection between the thumbnail in the iPhoto Window and the file it represents.
Try these in order - from best option on down...
1. Do you have an up-to-date back up? If so, try copy the library6.iphoto file from the back up to the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) allowing it to overwrite the damaged file.
2. Download <a href="http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/iplm/"><b><u>iPhoto Library Manager</b></u></a> and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.
3. If neither of these work then you'll need to create and populate a new library.
To create and populate a new *iPhoto 08* library:
Note this will give you a working library with the same Events and pictures as before, however, you will lose your albums, keywords, modified versions, books, calendars etc.
In the iPhoto Preferences -> Events Uncheck the box at 'Imported Items from the Finder'
Move the iPhoto Library to the desktop
Launch iPhoto. It will ask if you wish to create a new Library. Say Yes.
Go into the iPhoto Library (Right Click -> Show Package Contents) on your desktop and find the Originals folder. From the Originals folder drag the individual Event Folders to the iPhoto Window and it will recreate them in the new library.
When you're sure all is well you can delete the iPhoto Library on your desktop.
In the future, in addition to your usual back up routine, you might like to make a copy of the library6.iPhoto file whenever you have made changes to the library as protection against database corruption.

What version of iPhoto do you have? Assuming 09 or later...
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:

Because you have not deleted it from the hard drive.

Make a backup of it first.

Yes, this is what iTunes Match does.
Delete songs from your computer and uncheck Also delete this song from iCloud.
Try it with a few songs first.

You are correct, there is no flash player on the iPhone, find an alternate browser that may be able to help your quest.
Or use the corresponding app in the App Store.

What upgrade did you apply?  As a test launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and create a new, test library.  Import some photos and test to see if the same problem persists. Does it?

  • I have songs in my library, but can't sync them to my nano

    Hey all!
I really hope that somebody can help me. To be honest I am not sure what I did, but I now do not have any songs on my nano. I do however have A LOT of songs in my library, but it won't let me sync them to my ipod.
"This is the message that I keep getting:
Songs on the Ipod 'my Ipod' cannot be synced because all of the playlists selected for syncing no longer exist."
This isnt true tho because I do have playlists with songs in them and I can see ALL of my songs in my library.
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!
      Windows XP

You get this problem when the option 'Sync Music - Selected playlists' is being used to sync your iPod and then the playlist it has been updating from is deleted. Most people use this setting when the iPod is smaller than the iTunes library. If your library is larger than the capacity of your iPod, iTunes by default makes a new playlist called something along the lines of "Owner's iPod". If you for any reason delete it, you will not be able to sync your iPod.
Open iTunes and create a playlist to update your iPod from, call it -iPod to make it the first playlist in Sources. You can make this a normal playlist and drag whatever you want to it or you can make it a random Smart playlist. If you are making a smart playlist limit it to just less than the size of your iPod (for example 3700MB for a 4G iPod Nano). Now connect your iPod and when it appears in the Source list click on the iPod icon to bring up the preference tabs in the main pane. Go to the Music tab and choose Sync Music and the Selected playlists radio button. Choose the playlist you just made from the selection and click Apply. You can also sync from any existing playlists by choosing the same setting, you just need to make sure that the size of the playlists don't exceed the capacity of your iPod:
iTunes: Creating playlists of your favorite songs
How to create a Smart Playlist with iTunes
To make a random playlist go to File>New Smart Playlist.
    Uncheck "Match the following rule"
Check "Limit to" put "3700" in the number box, choose "MB" from the first list box, choose "Random" from the next list box. Check "Live Updating"
When you want to change the selection in the playlist just delete everything in it and it will add a new selection

  • I have deleted the iphoto library and lost my photo's......

i have deleted the iphoto library and cleared my trash and now all my photo's are gone. I have bought software to retrieve deleted data but not sure what file I am looking for. Can anybody help?

best solution is to restore yoru backup form before you made this error - that is the reason you must always have a good backup
If you don't you should start backing up immediately
to use the photos you recovered you look for photos (typically they have a .jpg or .jpeg extention to the name - and select the largest version  of each photo and import it into iPhoto
Note that for not much more that the cost of the data recovery software you could have had an extrnal hard drive and been running TimeMachine so none of this would be required

  • Divide library but leave behind photos used in albums

I'd like to divide my library which is organized in projects by year, sub-projects by month.   The easiest way is for me to lop off the oldest years but I don't want to remove photos that are being used used in albums.
Is there an easy way to do this without finding and moving each photo manually out of the project to be archived and move it to a new project?
A command like (taking liberties with SQL):
"Copy all photos from 'aperture.project 2006' to 'archive.project 2006', delete all photos from 'aperture.project 2006' where photos are not found in in any album"
Which would leave behind a much smaller project 2006 inside aperture, retaining only those photos in albums.
It occurs to me that I might be able to make a filter by adding a keyword en masse to all photos that are in albums.   apple usually has a more elegant way of doing stuff like this.
    Kevin

Let's start with versions.  You sig line say 10.5.1.  What OS and Aperture version?
Why are you dividing your Library?  You lose a lot of functionality, and gain almost nothing -- but I don't know your situation.
In general, Projects should not be used as broad organization containers -- use Folders.  The best approach is to stick with "One Project = one shoot"
What are you using to create "sub-projects"?

  • I have thumbnails in my iPhoto library but when I click on them the screen is black

I have thumbnails on my iPhoto library but when I click on them the screen is black.  I have had my computer in 2-3 times for this issue and the library is corrupt, or so I was told.  This doesn't make sense since the photos are obviously in my library some where.  Any thoughts what is going on?

Using iPhoto Library Manager  to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.
Click on the Add Library button,
and select the library you want to add from those in the selection window.
Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the Library ➙ Rebuild Library menu option
In the next  window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.
    Click on the Create button.
Note 1: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments. However, books, calendars, cards and slideshows will be lost.
Note 2:  Your current library will be left untouched for further attempts at a fix if so desired.

  • Missing Photos but Have Thumbnails in iPhoto

I have a new MacBook Pro Retina running Yosemite (10.10.1) and iPhoto 9.6 (910.29) and I upgraded from a previous MacBook Pro running 10.9.4 and iPhoto 8.1.2 (424).
After the migration I noticed that many pictures have thumbnails but I get errors viewing the images. The error is either the exclamation point in a triangle or the error “The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -54.)”. The images are on my old computer and open without a problem. On the new computer I get the error and when I search in spotlight for the image it isn't found on the hard drive.
My research so far shows this might be because the images didn't transfer or because permissions weren't applied correctly when they came across. Is there an easy way to test those two problems? Is there an easy way to move forward from here?
I'm tempted to upgrade iPhoto on my old laptop and run the migration again on just the photos but I'd like to avoid a catastrophic failure.
All of the images are backed up in Time Machine so I'm not particularly worried about losing the images I just don't want to have to import individual images for the hundreds (thousands?) missing.
    Thanks,
    Keith

This indicates a disconnect between the Thumbnail and the original
this can be caused by two things
1 - User action deleting items from inside the iPhoto  library - can be directly - can be from the All images list (never delete from there) - can be from running cleanup software like MacKeeer, CleanMac2  or other dangerous, defective software that improperly deletes or changes things in the iPhoto library - if you have done any of these things you must restore your backup from before you did them and damaged your iPhoto library - and I recommend getting rid of any "clean up software" ASAP (although being essentially MalWear it is not easy)
2 - corruption of the iPhoto library - If it is not #1 then Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - repair permissions and if needed rebuild your database

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.
This works for some users. Not sure why.
Go to Settings>General>Date and Time> Set Automatically>Off. Set the date ahead by about a year. Then see if you can connect to the store.
