System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list.
Instead of joining your Network from the list, click the WiFi icon at the top, and click join other network. Fill in everything as needed.
For 10.5/10.6, System Preferences>Network, unlock the lock if need be, highlight the Interface you use to connect to Internet, click on the advanced button, click on the DNS tab, click on the little plus icon, then add these numbers...

Also, turn off IPv6:

This issue is with Netflix upgrade. I spoke to Netflix and here is the solution. Remove Netflix app from Ipad and reload the app version 5.0.1. This updated version will correct the problem.

Even before I opened Firefox, I got a message saying that Firefox was open and it had to be closed or I had to restart my computer; what can be done to resolve this problem?

This is a continual problem. Even when I close Firefox and try to access it again, it takes minutes before I can access it again. Today was the first time that I received the window saying that another window of Firefox had to be closed before I could access Firefox when I hadn't even tried to access it to begin with. Thanks for giving me something to look for. For reasons mysterious to me my system has not slowed down since Saturday. That reading was in the morning with Chrome, Entourage and Word running but shortly after I logged in. The system had been on overnight but not in use. The next time it slows down I will check Activity Monitor and look for Page outs vs Page ins and let you know. Thanks so much for your help. There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page to log you in automatically. 
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server. 
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you anymore and you need to sign in once again.

So make sure that you keep the cookies from those sites via an allow exception and that you do not clear the cookies or site preferences via "Clear Recent History".
