I have to locate masters upon every Aperture run

I have 2 macs and I have installed Aperture 3 on both of them. I have no issue with one, but on the other on Aperture startup I have to locate all the masters every time.
Both computers have local images, external to Aperture Library and once I relink the images I can continue to work normally. The necessity to relink all the masters everytime is very annoying and I'd like to understand why this happens: if this is an issue related to the installation itself or a "feature" that I haven't yet discovered and that I'd like to disable...
Let me try to answer to the obvious questions:
- Both my Macs are uptodate with OS and Aperture
- The masters images are always in the very same location
- File permissions should be OK
- Image's masters had been positioned in the filesystem on Import and never moved
- The problem doesn't happen when I switch projects, only on Aperture startup or when I switch from one Aperture Library to another
- When I locate the masters of one project, then the masters in other projects get located too
Anybody had the same problem? Thanks for helping.

Hello Léonie,
thanks again for your help. I have done all the test you have suggested, and here are my comments.
And your home-directory is on the system volume, or have you moved it to an external volume? is your home folder maybe on a file server?
Have you recently checked your harddrive? Use Didk Utility to check your system drive.
My home folder is local and on the internal HD. With some application I've had issues due to the fact my volume is encrypted with FileVault, but I don't think this is relevant with Aperture as also on the other computer I use FileVault, and Aperture works seamlessly.
You mean the moun/unmount button in the screenshot above?
This may happen, if Aperture notices, that the volume is online already.
Yes, that's exactly the button I was referring to. Don't you think it is a little strange that if Aperture notice the volume is already online, then it marks it as offline? Plus what I find inconsistent is that once you click on mount, nothing happens
You also have removed the Preferences, right?
Yes, of course
I still think their might be something wrong either with your Library or some settings in your User account, so that Aperture cannot store the correct status of the master files.
You could do two tests, to check that:
create a new, empty Aperture library for testing and import a few images; reference these. See if you have the same trouble with this new library.
If the new library works fine, then the problem is  probably your old library.
I have created a new library, then I have imported few images, first inside Aperture's Library, and (of course) no issues in keeping files' location. Then I've tried to relocated the masters outside Aperture's Library and I've experiences the usual problem at startup
If also the new library does not work, try the same from a new user account. If you have the same trouble in different ,new account, then it is a system wide trouble, and either your hardware, your system, or Aperture needs fixing.
This test worked fine. After the creation of the library in the new account, the import of few images (this time directly as references masters), at Aperture restart everything was correctly referenced inside Aperture.
Then it might well be that Aperture installation needs fixing. Actually the weird behavior has always happened since the installation of Aperture. The computer having problems is relatively new, and I have installed Aperture there since no more than 45 days. I doubt there is a hardware issue, as I suppose I might have notices several other effects. The Disk Utility verify routine run smoothly and so far I haven't seen anything strange, outside Aperture.
If you find, that only your current library does not work, then try the last option and rebuild your library (rebuid database); but make sure you have a working backup, before you do that.
I'm using at least 4 different library and I'm experiencing the very same issue everywhere, consistently. One library is Aperture's default one, another one has been imported from the other computer, then one created as an export from the second Library and the latest one has been created from scratch by -double clicking on Aperture's icon.
At this point do you still think that a library rebuild might make any difference.
Since your masters are on the same volume as your Aperture library, you may also consider to consolidate the library temporarily after rebuilding it. This will move the master image files into your Aperture library and turn your library into a managed library, If this works, you can relocate the masters again to reference them later.
Once I'll have at least one working Library, no problem in moving all the file inside the main Library and then relocate them later on.
"Rebuild Database" cannot fix all corruptions.  There are other options to recreate an Aperture library, but those are more involved, so we should stick with the routine procedure for now.
Thanks again for your help

  • I have to reinstall OSX upon every restart

    I have the oddest problem.
Two weeks ago I restarted my computer and got stuck on the grey apple startup screen. At first I thought my HD was the issue. All of the data was accessable, and no signs of an issue (disk utility confirmed) Even knowing that I transferred all of the data over to a new drive and reinstalled OSX (not a clean install). All booted fine. It even booted upon every software update that was required. No issues while working from that point on, untill I needed to reboot. When this happened, I was faced with the forever grey apple startup screen again. I repeated the process, all booted fine as explained above, but this time I scanned for any viruses (not expecting any). Disk utility confirmed all was good with the new drive, and also with the old. All runs perfectly while on. I am confident that this is not a HD issue (mechanical). Moments ago I had to reboot with fingers crossed. Machine has been running for days with no issue. I'm back to square one. Something seems to be messing with what is required to startup on the drive. I have lost no data during these events. Here's my issue. I know I could do a clean install, but I have so many applications, and audio plugins, that have been authorized over the years - tracking down 3 year old serial numbers, and reinstalling items I might have even forget I was using would be a task I can't bare to think of. Any help would be wonderul. Even if I had to do a clean install, would there be a way to save that data and transfer it over without having to go through the relicencing of all of those apps, etc.? Yikes, what is going on? Is this a "genuis bar" canadate?
Thanks in advance for your wisdom.

Mac Pro 12 Core, Mac OSX 10.6.8

When you reinstall just OS X, it overwrites itself and those bundled Apple programs with a new (but older) copy then you Software update to get current on 10.6.8
Some third party software you install installs a at boot kernel extension file that gets loaded when OS X loads, if there is a problem with that software it causes the gray screen and spinning wheel thing when you boot up.
When you install OS X over itself it removes these kernel extension files as they don't belong.
So I suspect it's software you installed AFTER resinstalling OS X when they didn't work is what is causing the problem. (likely the anti-virus, unless it's ClamXav)
Also it might be software installed when you log into the machine it's set to automatically launch, but that usually occurs after you log in and gives a Kernel Panic, (black screen and you need to restart message)
So what you can do is hold the Shift Key down upon boot, this will enter Safe Mode and you can uninstall and/or update those programs. Or reinstall OS X again to clear them out, then get online and check for updates to all your third party software.
..Step by Step to fix your Mac
Once you get your machine fixed, you should clone that boot drive automatically to another internal drive with Carbon Copy Cloner
That way you can hold the option key down and boot from the clone.
    Most commonly used backup methods
Also you should be considering Deep Freeze at this time, as Apple is likley about to drop support for 10.6
Turn off Java in all your browsers and via the Java Preferences app, it's a major security risk (so is Flash, so use it off most of the time)
Use Firefox or (yucky spyware Chrome) as it's getting security updates and there is no Safari 6 for 10.6 (only not secure Safari 5.7.1)

  • I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and have to manually locate the photos, every time!!!

I moved my iPhoto libraries from one hard drive to another and now every time I open a library I have to manually locate the photos. After locating the first file, it works well and remembers the location of the files of all the events, even when the folders containing the actual photos are in several different locations.
The problem is that when I close and open iPhoto, it does not remember where the files were and I have to locate at least a file, all over again.
Does anyone knows if there is a way of making iPhoto "remember" or saving the location of the files?

By default, iPhoto will store its library file under ~/Pictures. To select a library manually in iPhoto:
    Ensure that iPhoto is closed.
Hold down the Option key and click on the iPhoto icon in your Dock or launch it from the Applications folder.
    Click on Choose Library.
Locate and select the library you wish to use.
Close iPhoto and re-open it. Does it remember the library that you selected?
For more information on moving your iPhoto library, see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1229.
Hope that helps, have a great day.

In the case that your OS is Windows 7 (64 bit)
    1. Open windows explorer, go to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Apple Application Support
    2. Copy file "libxml2.dll"
    3. Open new windows explorer, to to location C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support
    4. Paste file "libxml2.dll" to the location.
    5. Reboot your computer, it should not display that message, it should be clear.

  • Can't locate Referenced Files in Aperture 3

All my photo master files are in separate directories on a NAS (network attached storage; 4x1Tb) and I import Projects from that into Aperture on my IMac.  I migrated my MAC Aperture Libraries to a separate external drive and lost some of the references to the Master.  I can reconnect some Projects to the masters on my NAS, but not all.  Some projects won't reconnect using  Locate Referenced Files.  I can find the files and match the photos and Aperture looks like it reconnected, but when I look at the separate images, I get "File not found."  I know the original photos are on my NAS because I can see them using a separate PC hooked into it, but can't seem to complete making the link to the master.  My intent is to move all masters into my Aperture Library because I can't stand losing photos this way anymore, but I need help making that link.  Any ideas what's happening and what to do.
Even though I have the originals on my NAS, all my processed versions (4 and 5* photos) are in my Aperture Library and I hate to lose those.
Update: I seem to be able to connect one photo at a time, but selecting an entire set of Project photos and doing "connect all" doesn't seem to be working.  I have thousands of photos and working one at a time is impossible.
    How can I get help?
    <Email Edited By Host>

I migrated my MAC Aperture Libraries to a separate external drive and lost some of the references to the Master.
How is your NAS formatted, where your original masters are stored? And how is the external drive formatted that holds your Aperture library?
Your Aperture library needs to be on a drive formatted Mac OS X extended, Journaled. If the drive should not have that formatting, move the Aperture library to disk with the coorrect format.
If you cannot reconnect originals, that are clearly there, the reason may be, that your Aperture library needs repairing, see: Repairing and Rebuilding Your Aperture Library: Aperture 3 User Manual
I'd try to repair permissions and to repair the library, before trying to reconnect again.
Since you want to consolidate all originals in your Aperture library, I'd try to copy the originals that cannot be recoonected, to the same drive that holds yor aperture libryr and try to reconnect them there, then consolidate them from there. It can be, that the network connection of the NAS is not reliable enough.

  • For some strange reason the songs in my library are multiplying. For example, I really only have 4,000 songs but every time I open itunes I have 6,8,10,000 songs! Any one else have this problem.  How do I stop that from happening?

For some strange reason the songs in my library are multiplying. For example, I really only have 4,000 songs but every time I open itunes I have 6,8,10,000 songs! Any one else have this problem.  How do I stop that from happening?  I keep having to delete my library!

This "original file cannot be found" thing happens if the file is no longer where iTunes expects to find it. Possible causes are that you or some third party tool has moved, renamed or deleted the file, or that the drive it lives on has had a change of drive letter. It is also possible that iTunes has changed from expecting the files to be in the pre-iTunes 9 layout to post-iTunes 9 layout,or vice-versa, and so is looking in slightly the wrong place.
Select a track with an exclamation mark, use Ctrl-I to get info, then cancel when asked to try to locate the track. Look on the summary tab for the location that iTunes thinks the file should be. Now take a look around your hard drive(s). Hopefully you can locate the track in question. If a section of your library has simply been moved, or a drive letter has changed, it should be possible to reverse the actions.
Alternatively, as long as you can find a location holding the missing files, then you should be able to use my FindTracks script to reconnect them to iTunes .

  • Movement Type 340 doesn't have Storage Location Associated with it

When a batch is given a new valuation type, there is no storage location associated with that movement, because the movement would be for the entire batch obviuosly.  In BI though, that creates a problem, because the movement needs to have a storage location assigned to it. Here is an example of the problem:
Storage Location----Batch--Xbuy Current Stock-----Cert Current Stock
    ..........0001...................122....................100......................................0
Then batch 122 is moved from xbuy to cert.  But, since there is no storage location associated with that movement, the current stock now looks like this:
Storage Location----Batch--Xbuy Current Stock-----Cert Current Stock
    ............#.......................122...................-100...................................100
    ..........0001...................122....................100......................................0
But it should look like this:
Storage Location----Batch--Xbuy Current Stock-----Cert Current Stock
    ..........0001...................122......................0......................................100
We are using the standard SAP Extractor for this inventory model, and I am curious as to whether there is a fix to this out there, or how we should go about fixing it?
    Thanks,
    Owen

The problem I am having is kind of a display and a data issue.  All the data from the source system is coming over to BI in this case, but the problem is that the two systems are fundamentally different.  In ECC, a batch can change from one valuation type to another with no thought to storage location, and that works just fine.  However, when that same record is in BI, if it doesn't have a value for every characteristic in the model (including storage location in this case), then the ad-hoc report won't drill down correctly.
    To answer your options:
    1.  We don't have the option of just not showing storage location, because this problem would render storage location useless because of data inconsistencies, and storage locations are an important part of our business.
    2.  We have several storage locations, so this will not work either.
Also, since we have several different storage locations we use, there is no way to just assign storage location 0001 to every empty record.  However, I am thinking of a solution along these lines.  If there was somewhere we could go to see the storage location of the particular batch, then we could fill the storage location at the time of the data load.  The problem we would need to overcome though is timing.  How do we do this for historical data that has moved storage locations?  What if the movement goes to the delta queue, and then the storage location changes?
    Thanks,
    Owen

  • Relocating iPhoto Masters from within Aperture 3.2.4?

    Here's my challenge:
I was running out of room on my MBP 500 GB HD, so I added an external 3 TB drive and relocated some of the Masters from my Aperture 3.2.4 library to the external drive. This gave me about 40 GB additional space on the drive.
Then I realized that most of the space on the disk was taken up by using Aperture 3 with my iPhoto (circa 2007) library (which I never use anymore).
When I attempt to relocate the masters I get a message saying the masters can't be relocated.
I can see the iPhoto events in Aperture, and I want to use Aperture to relocate the iPhoto masters (instead of exporting 10,000 images out of iPhoto).
Also, is there a utility just for upgrading previous iPhoto libraries (without upgrading to iLife 11 which I have no need for)?

  • I have installed hydra express plugin for Aperture many time with no success

I have installed hydra express plugin for Aperture many time with no success. When I select edit with plugin hydra, the make an HDR image with hydra appears. When I hit the process button a message states that hydra is not found. I have checked in my application support folder. There is no plugin folder for aperture or a hydra plugin.
    Any help would be appreciated.

Plug-ins get installed in one of two locations.
    ~/Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/Edit
    or
    /Library/Application Support/Aperture/Plug-Ins/Edit
The second is for all users of the machine and is located in the root folder of your system drive (often "Macintosh HD").
The first is your private library (note the ~ symbol which a shortcut to your user folder) and means the plugin is just for you. ~/Library is hidden by default so finder wont see it. To see it in Finder, use the menu "Go->Go to folder" and type in ~/Library as the folder name. Then you can natigate to /Application Support/ etc....
That should help you determine if it's installed. Note, you may only find an alias in the plug-in folder and the programs may actually be stored elsewhere. Also, if the Plugin can be used for export as well as edit, it might be located in /Plug-Ins rather than /Plug-Ins/Edit
In terms of why it isn't working, I think I may have a clue to what's going on. Sometimes plugins use utilitly shell commands that get distributed with the plugin. These can get quarantined by Macs Gatekeep security because they are not signed by a 'valid' developer.
I've recently taken on the task of making the old Enfuse plugin compatible with the latest version of Aperture, and ran into this gatekeep quarantine issue. I got around it by de-quarantine the required commands and got the plugin working.
For distribution, I've put an AppleScript together which installs the plugin and takes care of the quarantine issue, but I am just (literally today) tesing that on a different machine to make sure it works the same as it does on mine.
If you can first confirm that hydra is installed in one of the above locations, I'll then talk you through how to check if there is a quarantine issue with it.
