I have to render everything to see my changes!

I am having a real problem here. I am using a Flip Mino HD Camcorder (for now), to record all my video & audio. I have taken all the m4v video clips and opened them up in Quicktime and then exported them to .mov files. The original video clips are HD 720p/30 frames, and I exported just the same.
Every time I bring in a new clip I have to render the audio. If I apply a simple effect like adding text, or a glow, just about ANYTHING I can preview anything until I render. Also, it always tell me that my source doesn't match my project and it will switch it to match the 1st clip but I selected the HD 720p/30 frame option which is exactly what the actual clips are.
What can I do in order to have the "real time" rendering that so many people are able to acheive? Any clues of what I'm doing wrong? Please let me know if you need more info because I really want this issue to be solved. I spend more then 50% of my time rendering video just to preview the effect rather then editing and creating media.

I rendered the file with H.264 - 30 frames, multi pass, automatic bit rate, 720 x 1280.
UPDATE: Instead of using HDV 720p as the sequence (under easy setup, and under sequence prefs [Cmd+0] - I used Apple Pro Res. It seems to not need as many things to be rendered as much as the other setting, however the playback quality is quite choppy until I render the video. I assume this is normal, no?

  • Why do I have to render everything??

    Hi there,
I am very new to both Mac and Final Cut Express. I got final cut a few days ago now and a friend of mine has asked me to chop up some video for him.
It was originally a .VOB file so I've used a converter to convert the files into .MOV (QuickTime) and imported them into FCPE. My problem lies with the fact that I have to render each of these clips as soon as I put them in and then again when I apply any effects. I see this as a lot of hassle for such simple tasks, am I doing something wrong?
I used Sony Vegas on Windows before and there was significantly less rendering to be done.
    Josh

    >Just to clarify then, I should use MPEG Streamclip to convert the .VOB files to QuickTime DV/DVCPro and then that should solve the rendering issue?
Absolutely.  The key to not having to render is to make sure the media you bring into a project and place on the Timeline matches the Sequence settings exactly.  So when converting a DVD's VOB files, use MPEG Streamclip to convert to QuickTime DV/DVCPro or to AIC, whichever your Sequence is set for.  Usually you'd use QuickTime DV for standard definition footage and AIC for high definition footage.
Here's a tutorial for using MPEG Streamclip:  http://www.secondchairvideo.com/?p=739
Once all the footage in the Timeline matches the Sequence settings, you shouldn't have to render anything for playback until you've added enough effects that your system can't keep up with (filters, transitions, composites, layers, etc). Of course, some media like still images are video and will always need to be rendered for output as video.

  • Now I have to render everything - never had to before

When I first started my video I could add text on top of a clip in the sequence and I never had to render anything. Now towards the end anytime I add text on top of a clip, I always have to render. All I'm doing is adding a Lower 3rd text box.
The only thing that has changed that I can think of is that the video is now almost two hours long. I'm curious to know why now all text added in has to be rendered when in the beginning it did not. Thanks.

Well as your project gets more complicated you are adding to the things fcp and the mac have to keep track of so you are adding to system overhead. If you take a bunch of stills and edit them into a new timeline, you'll see the first stills will be real time and the later stills will require a render. Seems to be the way things are.

  • Have to render EVERYTHING

Recently I have been having to render everything I put into the timeline and I can't for the life of me find out why. Can someone suggest a checklist that I can go through to figure this out? I have an intel iMac, 2GB of RAM, use Hi Def video from Canon HV20. Codec is set to HDV-Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i50 but I think that is what I have always used. In the past I would not have to render until I was well into the editing process but now, anything I drop into the timeline, even if it is a blank project, has to be rendered. It's making editing impossible.
I use a Lacie 1TB disk as a scratch disk. Could it be the amount of data on this disk?
    HELP!!!!!!

Here are differences between the clip and the sequence
vid rate for clip is 29.97 fps, vid rate for sequence is 25 fps
data rate for clip is 8.9 MB/sec, data rate for sequence is blank
alpha for clip is None(Ignore), alpha for sequence is blank
composite for clip is normal, composite for sequnce is blank
audio for clip is 1 Stereo, audio for sequence is 2 outputs
audio format for clip is 16 bit integer, audio format for sequence is 32 bit floating point

How much RAM do you have? I hope not 768 M. That would be your first problem if so.

  • Why do i have to render everything on fce

I think it's Final Cut Express, maybe a student edition. I don't know, It's my roommates. but when i upload my footage shot from 1080p dslr, I can't upload it without rendering everything. I have a 1 hour wedding video i have to put together and i just finished a 5 minute video for my church, the 5 minute video took about 1.5 hrs to render. i don't have the time to do that with the wedding. someone please help. as far as i know, my files are not compressed. and there should be no reason why i can't just upload without the render.

    >as far as i know, my files are not compressed. and there should be no reason why i can't just upload without the render
Oh but you're wrong.  The files your camera records are extremely compressed.  Your camera uses a recording format that was never designed for editing and certainly does not work natively in FCE ... hence the extremely long and constant renders.

  • Do I have to render EVERYTHING?!

    Hi,
I'm pretty new to FCP, although I've used Adobe Premiere in the past and got on just fine with it.
I've managed to import clips from Finder (they came via an SD card from a HD camera) and have put them on the timeline, but I've had a number of strange things happening:
    * beeping sound when I try and play back the timeline
    * can't add video effects (all greyed out)
*the whole timeline is unrendered the whole time - but there is no effect on them. why do they need to render if I've done nothing to them?!
    * I can only play back one clip before it tells me there are dropped frames, and to turn off unlimited RT... what is this and where can I find it?!
I'm not too techy, but I recall someone telling me that you can't save the final project in the same place as the original clips, so I am now using a 612G server as the scratchdisk.
If it's because the files are too big for the computer to play with, is this what offline editing is for? If so how do I do it - the FCP tutorial on it didnt't explain offline editing when you import from Finder
    Copied from 'About this Mac'... 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 4GB 8-- MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM
    Any thoughts?

The beeping means the audio is unrendered

    not sure on this one
**the whole timeline is unrendered the whole time - but there is no effect on them. why do they need to render if I've done nothing to them?!*
some video formats are not natively supported by FCP. What you may need to do is convert all the clips to a different codec/filetype (apple pro res is good, though a little memory hefty) and then import them into FCP. Also, did you import directly from your camera, or did you copy the videos over to a hard drive first? That might be your problem as well.
*I can only play back one clip before it tells me there are dropped frames, and to turn off unlimited RT... what is this and where can I find it?!*
The RT (or "real time") settings are available in the form of a little ovalish button on the top left corner of the timeline window. It says "RT" on it.
*I'm not too techy, but I recall someone telling me that you can't save the final project in the same place as the original clips, so I am now using a 612G server as the scratchdisk.*
You can save the final project in the same place as the clips. However, never save to the SD card in a camera.

Others around here may have a better explanation of this, so I wont risk confusion on the issue here. I'll only say that...
    *Copied from 'About this Mac'... 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon, 4GB 8-- MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM*
...with a computer like that, there should be no trouble with file sizes/band width, or codecs. I do HDV and Pro Res editing on my macbook pro without a hiccup.
    *Any thoughts?*
    Thanks

  • I have to Render Everything, how do i fix this?

I am capturing fine from my Sony HDV camcorder...i record in 1080i but then down-convert to normal DV utilizing my camera's ability to do so. the footage shows up fine in my bin but when i add it to the timeline there is a need to render every single frame of every clip (and i haven't changed anything before adding). i am not sure why its necessary to render any of it seeing as with my previous experience in FCP footage didnt need to be rendered in order to be previewed from the timeline....
    any ideas?

From FCP's menu bar: Final Cut Pro > Easy Setup. Confirm that it is set up for DV.
Go to: Sequence > Settings > Load Sequence Preset. This will correctly set up your Timeline for DV.

  • Have to render HDV to see in seq

I have looked at other posts and haven't found a solution. Capturing HDV from the new Sony. I am using the HDV preset and have the seq settings set the same. Any other thing that I am missing on.

    Hi Shawn,
Did you capture HDV or HDV - Apple Intermediate Codec? Assuming you are in NTSC land (would be helpful to indicate PAL or NTSC), if you used the "HDV" capture preset then using the "HDV - 1080i60" sequence preset should work without rendering. If you have used the intermediate codec, you would have to use the "Apple Intermediate Codec 1080i60" sequence preset respectively. If you are on PAL, replace every "60" above with a "50".
There is nothing else to miss really...

  • Why Do I Have To Render EVERYTHING In FCE

I am brand new to Mac and FCE and i just switched from my PC and Sony Vegas because I've been told a million times that Mac is the way to go for video editing, and well right now I am having major doubts. I opened my HD file that i am going to work on and i pressed play on the canvas and it said "Unrenderd". I've been searching the internet, forums, manual and i cant find an answer that helps me 100%! Can someone please explain to me what i am doing wrong.

    DerekBrackett wrote:

    consumer = convenience
You don't have to think about codecs, sampling rates, aspect ratio with iMovie - any 'fidget pictures' get converted. plug'n play.
A Pro would never use as highly-compressed material as h.264, which is made for playback. most of those playback-codecs don't store every frame, just 'differences' - for editing with frame-precision, the computer has to estimate content .... whooo, here goes quality. you can edit h.264, but that needs with the actual architecture of Quicktime a lot of computing(-power). if FC/QT/... would use the GPU for additional computation ...
the actual FC/e is intended for editing a few, 'better' codecs, no 'does edit all'-tool. -

  • I have to render after every friggin cut

I bet this has come up before but I couldn't find a thread about it. I'm working with FCE and everytime I edit something I have to render everything thereafter. That can't be right, can it? What do I have to do to work more efficient?

  • Every time FCPX starts I have to render my project

I experience a really awful problem...
Every time I start my project I have to re-render the whole timeline.
I'm using the latest version of everything, also from the CoreMelt plug-in I'm using in this project.
As long as the project is short this doesn't happen, but after 2 minutes project lenght this happens all the time.
I have 64 GB RAM so this should not be the problem.
The plugin developer stated that this is a FCPX background rendering problem, but when I switch it off it's not getting better.
Then I have to render it manually, before I can edit/watch the project.
I have one of the fastest MaPro's available 12 core and I work on a SSD-RAID0 with highest Data-Rates...
So what is the problem and how to solve this??

    wolfgang,
does this happen if you delete the coremelt fx from the clips ?
I have never had this problem. But I did demo the coremelt plugs and they gave me nothing but H++++
Not saying they are the culprit... But if FCPx was at fault I think we'd be hearing more of it...
Try creating a fresh project with no core melt of other effects in it but with the same clips.. Then render the timeline. Quit FCPx and relaunch and see if the problem persists...
    If it does
    Try deleting
    /Users/YourFolder/Library/Caches/ EVERYTHING FCPx
    /Users/YourFolder/Library/Preferences/ EVERYTHING FCPx
Reboot with shift held.. Then log it.. Then reboot normally

  • My friend doesn't have to render brightness and contrast, why do I?

    How is everybody doing?
I am new to Final Cut Pro 7 but I have been working on it for a couple  of Months. A friend of mines has been editing for a couple of years and  he's pretty much teaching me a lot of the basics.
I have encountered a problem that me nor him can find a solution.
You see, for some weird reason, with his Final Cut Pro 7, he can add the  filter "Brightness and Contrast" to his clips and doesn't have to  render it at all. However, when I try to do it, I have to render (and my  video is long so rendering is going to take forever).
I want to know if there is anything that I am missing or anything I need  to change on Final Cut Pro so I don't have to render when using the  filter "Brightness & Contrast".
    Please let me know, thanks!

Make sure you're not comparing apples to oranges.  Do both his and your Mac have the exact same specs?  System resources has a lot to do with which filters will playback without rendering (in real time) and which won't.  And as MtD indicates, are you both using the same codec for editing?  Some video formats work natively in FCP and won't need much rendering ... formats that don't work natively in FCP will require much more rendering.  Also make sure that clip settings match the Sequence settings exactly.
Check every aspect of both systems and media; if everything is the same, then you may have a mystery ... but chances are you're simply comparing apples to oranges.

I agree. I don't rely on iCloud as a backup, that is what I have my portable hard drive for. Its 500 GB so I can hold my entire iTunes library several times over on it. I have all my movies on my hard drive, but somehow "The Mist" got deleted off of my hard drive, so I figured "Well, the option to redownload an already purchased movie is available through iCloud, I'll just do that!"
And permissions and download availability have nothing to do with it, the movie's still there, it still allows me to redownload it. The only problem is when I click download, I get that message.
And nobody else uses my computer, but I do have multiple accounts authorized on it. Even still though, I am attepmpting to download it through the account I purchased it under. :/
