I have to restart iTunes every day to access my home sharing on my Apple tv

I have to restart iTunes every day to access my home sharing on my Apple tv, Apple had me turn off the firewall on my computer that did not help This happens on all my 4 Apple TV's only 2 are wireless but it mainly happens on my wired Apple TV's. the rest of my network works fine

Exact same problem since a long time. Started after an ITune upgrade 6 months ago if I remember correctly.
Im using Home Sharing. I have IPad,IPhone and 2 Apple TV one 2nd (Wifi) and one 3rd gen. Wifi provided by Apple Express. Home sharing work great on all device without interupting playback and/or disconnecting until I leave iTune server hosting Home Sharing idle for something like 2 hours. I have tried many time to access Home Sharing from any of my Apple device before that said 2 hours idle and it connected properly. Like you, it mostly happen overnight while iTune is idle for a long period. When it happen, all devices stop detecting ITune Home Sharing. Remote Apps and/or Music Home Sharing can't connect. Doing of one of the points down below temporarly fix problem on all devise and they connect right away until everything is idle again.
1) Turning OFF then ON Home sharing temporarely fix the problem (Until next idle).
2) Closing Itune also temporarely fix the problem.
Since long time (Before this problem started) I have ITune installed in a VMware virtual machine running Windows XP SP3 32bit on top of an VMware ESXi 5.0 host. First I though it was more of my unusual setup causing the problem. I have tried a lot of things. Scratch reinstall, removing firewall, removing all kind of power features on host and OS it self.No anti-virus, no other software installed. Running out of idea. Now glad to see some else have the exact same problem.
Will keep looking and post if I find anything.
What is your setup hosting iTune ? PC, Mac + version ?

  • Why do I have to restart iTunes on my iMac to get Home Sharing to work again on my ATV2 and ATV3?

Last week I ordered two more Apple TVs 3rd generation.  I have connected them to my network and the ATV2 that I had, seems to be working differently.  I have to restart my iTunes on my iMac to get Home Sharing to work again.  I go to Apple Support and reference this page (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2972) and it seems to be the only solution, reset iTunes.
I currently have all apple products from end to end.  This doesn't seem to be working out as seamless as it should.  Any suggestions?

Until Apple gets off their butts to fix this, you can do this.  Create a workflow that 1. Closes iTunes, 2. Pauses 10 seconds, 3. Opens iTunes.  Then Save it as an Application.
    Then...
Create an Apple Script by "recording yourself" launching your new workflow.  Save that Apple Script.
    Finally..
Go into Mail, and create a Rule that when you receive an email with the subject as "Restart iTunes" it will run your Apple Script (wchich launches your workflow app).
Just send yourself an email from you chair!!!  :-)  Please reply if this works for you.  It works GREAT for me on Mountain Lion!
    Enjoy!

  • Have to restart iTunes EVERY time I want to stream to Apple TV!

I have the 2012 Apple TV and while Netflix, Youtube, etc. normally work well, I have to restart iTunes EVERY time I want to stream to Apple TV! My iMac is always on and the newest version of iTunes is always running. It doesn't seem to matter if the iMac is in sleep mode or not, and I have a very strong wifi signal coming from my Airport Express. Every time - not sometimes - I want to access music, TV shows or movies in iTunes on Apple TV, it says my library is loading, or cannot connect. Every time. What can I do?

WC, When I use the term Home Sharing it is perhaps a little oversimplified, it is quiet impractical and often overkill to continually restate the complete sequence of events that led me to 'a fix', however, I did not suddenly one day find a problem, switch to wi-fi and find all was well. There was significant investigation done on my part to try to find a solution. if by me saying I moved to wifi and it worked, others can move to wifi and have a fix, great. I am not trying to reinvent the wheel here, others much cleverer than me are looking at that...
I had a functioning setup over wired until approx 2 months ago with an ATV2 connecting to Imac library, I was at the time occasionally running some software that restarted itunes once finished which may have masked the problem if it was there, unlikely though. I purchased an ATV3 with a new TV, this upon installation required an ios update much the same time as the itunes update.
I noticed the white light on the atv3 flashing when it was asleep, this was not something i had seen on the atv2, Investigation suggested this was normal behaviour, I remain unconvinced of this.
from that point on 'Home Sharing' did not work until a restart of itunes, it would then work all night (6+ hours)
My mac was set to sleep over night, I tried turning that off-no difference, turned ip6 off-no difference, once it hangs other devices on the network are unable to see the itunes lib, iphone, ipad,MBP etc
Once the thing hangs, Netstat shows a massive quantity of open ports 100/150+ to each on/sleeping atv,  a restart of itunes clears this lot. with wired, these connections start to build again, with wireless not so much.
looking back on here shows folks have had this problem in various guises since early 2011, apple by their own admission state the last update 'fixes some issues with Home Sharing', it seems it introduced some for me...
I am quite sure some peoples problems are down to underlying network problems however this is supposed to be 'Home Sharing' it shouldnt need a degree in computer science to configure, it should just work.
I am not about to pull my network apart to troubleshoot any further, between mac & atv's there are 2 x Giga/switches(netgear) and an Airport Extreme(bridged), the atv cable was plugged into the A.Ex no dice and now connects w/less to the same box and works fine...

  • I have to restart/reboot in order to reconnect with Home Sharing every time.  Is this normal?

When I originally bought the Apple TV (2nd generation) a while back, it always maintained good connectivity to Home Sharing.  For a while, I've had to go into General and select Restart every time I wanted to use Home Sharing, otherwise Apple TV would not connect.  Today, the Apple TV would not connect to the WiFi network at all.  After restarting and rebooting several times, the Apple TV finally reconnected is currently working.
My logical guess is that the WiFi antenna on the Apple TV may be going out.  I have used it a lot.  Anyone have any tips?

This will most likely help a bunch.....it did a complete fix for me.  Follow it step-by-step.
    1.   Open "System Preferences".   ( computer only), (Windows computer unknown)
    2.   Open "Network".
    3.   Click on the "Sprocket with down arrow".
    4.   Select "Make Service Order"
    5.   Move the connection your using (Wifi, Ethernet, etc.) to the top, and click Apply.
    6.   If you selected Ethernet, then turn OFF Wifi in the top menu.
    7.   Shut DOWN your computer and then restart after completely shutting down.
7a. Either restart or unplug and plug in the Apple TV (insure your logged into Home Share after restart).
7b. Start iTunes (insure your logged into Home Share).
    Enjoy life again!

The Videos are showed up front 4 months, but now they are no longer to be seen. When you star a video first the hard drive starts, but then it stops and hangs up. I have to restart it, starting with the apple logo....

Here is what worked for me:
My usb hub, being usb2, was too fast. I moved the wire to a usb port directory on my pc. That is a usb1 port which is slow enough to run your snyc.

Are you using the same ID for homesharing on all devices.
By the way shared libraries don't show up under either 'Music' or 'Libraries'.

  • Do you have to restart iTunes everytime you import multiple CD's?

I am looking for a way to "refresh" the source list, at least, the current CD in the drive. When I start iTunes, it can recognize and import a CD, but I eject the CD, and insert a new a new CD, I have to restart iTunes for it to recognize the CD. What's up with that?
    Thanks

Basically all you have to do is drag your iTunes folder to a suitably sized DVD. However have a look at this document "iTunes: Moving your iTunes Music folder" it describes moving your folder to another drive but for "other drive" substitute DVD media and it should do what you want. http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=301748

Macbook air Wi Fi and sound stops every time it goes to sleep. i have to  restart it every time to use wifi and sounds. this started happening just after the latest upgrade to OS X. any reasons why its doing that and how to fix it.

Test after taking each of the following steps. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Make sure the network is on the preferred list by following these instructions. It's important to read the article carefully, as it's the starting point for any further efforts to solve the problem. If you skip any of the steps, the problem may not be solved.
    2. Follow the instructions in this support article under the heading "Symptom: The network connection drops unexpectedly."
    3. Make a note of all your settings for Wi-Fi in the Network preference pane, then delete the connection from the connection list and recreate it with the same settings. You do this by clicking the plus-sign icon below the connection list, and selecting Wi-Fi as the interface in the sheet that opens. Select Join other network from the Network Name menu, then select your network. Enter the password when prompted and save it in the keychain.
    4. From the Location menu at the top of the Network preference pane, select Edit Locations. A sheet will drop down. Click the plus-sign button to create a new location. Give it any name you want. In the new location, set up the Wi-Fi service with the same settings you used before. Click Apply and test.
    5. Launch the Keychain Access application. Search for and delete all AirPort network password items that refer to the network. Make a note of the password first.
    6. In some cases, the problem has been resolved by repairing permissions on the startup volume.
    7. Turn off Bluetooth and test.
    8. Reinstall OS X.

  • How can i access my home shared videos from my iPad2 if I now have iTunes match?

how can i access my home shared videos from my iPad2 if I now have iTunes match?

That's exactly what I meant, but for some reason Home Sharing stopped working on my iPad2 once I activated iTunes Match.
Since then, I waited for iTunes Match to finish setting up and scanning my iTunes library on my MacBook Pro and I restarted my iPad2. Both Home Sharing and iTunes Match are now up and running smoothly!
    Thanks for the reply!

  • HT202213 Have newest version of ITunes and a new AppleTV. ITunes File Home Sharing only shows option to turn off home sharing.  No home sharing icon and Apple TV claims home sharing is not turned on.  Where is this advanced menu?

Cannot get home sharing to work with my new apple TV.  Have the latest version of ITunes and the apple TV is connected to my wi-fi network.  The instruction page says to go to the Advanced menu option of ITunes and choose Home Sharing.  This option does not exist.  The closest I can find is under the File option>Home Sharing where my only option is to turn off home sharing.  There is no home sharing icon and Apple TV insist that the home sharing is not turned on.
I must be missing something obvious here.

  • ITunes 10.5.2... home sharing won't stay on.

I'll try and cover as much as possible as to not leave anything out
    Equipment
    ATV 2 (4.4.4)
MacBook Pro 13 running iTunes 10.5.2  also fully updated
Telus Optik internet 25 MB Connection
Unrelated things also connected to wifi
    2 iPhones
    1 iPad
    PS3
    1 PC
    Telus DVR (hardwired)
    Everything is running on wireless.
So this use to work fine on my previous iTunes I would open ATV and home sharing was just always an option under the computers tab
Now since updating I open iTunes and home sharing just does't pop up in the tray on the left side but it use to just fine and without fail
The steps I've tried to correct the problem are as follows
I've tried to deauthorize the computer and then re authorize it
I've turned off home sharing and then turning it back on both on the ATV and iTunes (also should note I've done this in different combinations of steps ie. auth then repower then turn on ATV and vice versa etc etc...)
I've also done the above without hitting the done botton after turning home sharing on with iTunes it stays in the tray this way but still won't show up on the ATV, once I hit done it just disappears.
I've tried all the little tips like turn off power saver and all that fun stuff, none of it works.
I've checked all the configs on my firewall and they are set to allow iTunes on any port any connection etc.
I've read countless other threads and user tips to no avail.
I can't downgrade my iTunes back to 10.5.1 because everytime I try to move it to the tray the lion os says it can't be removed.
I can't figure out if this is actually an iTunes issue or an ATV one?
    Anyways
If anyone could assist me or if you're having the same issues perhaps we can work together to find a solution to this problem.
    Thanks J

    I have fixed the issue
    The steps I used were
    1. restore ATV under //settings/general/restore
    2. log out then in with apple id //setting/computers/turn off-on
    3. unplug router for 30 sec
    4. restart macbook with no windows being kept open
    5. when macbook restarts open iTunes
    6. log out then onto home sharing under advanced tab
    7. make sure sharing is enable under //iTunes/preferences/sharing/ then click share my library on local network
    8. it should work after this point and come up in ATV
///side note the sharing tab on iTunes won't show up in the sidebar of iTunes not certain if it's suppose to///

  • HT1947 How can I turn on Home Sharing on my Apple TV if I have lost my remote?

I have logged in to iTunes on my PC and enabled Home Sharing, I have then downloaded the Apple TV Remote app on my iphone5 and turned the Home Sharing on there as well.
Now when I turn the app on the only icon that I see to control is the iTunes library.  I assume that the last thing that I need to do is to turn on the Home Sharing function on in Apple TV the only problem is that I don't have a remote to control anything.  The screen is on I just can't navigate.
    Thanks

Thanks so much! My issue is that I followed those same steps already and can't find my advanced settings on my iPad. Any suggestions?
