I have to update my Iphone5S to IOS8 but do not have space due to pix/videos. Will I lose them if I delete them?

If you are using a Mac, use iPhoto to import the photos and videos. If you use a Windows computer, it should show up under Devices in My Computer, and you can move them to another folder from there. That way, you can delete them from your phone and retain a copy on the computer. iPhoto on the Mac will automatically offer to delete the copy from the phone after you import them.
Another tip: Update iOS using iTunes instead of using Wi-Fi (Settings > General > Software Update), as it requires less free space.

If you are talking about a third-party app (like Bluefire Reader) you need to connect your iPad to your computer, open iTunes, select the iPad, and select Apps in the Sidebar. Exactly the same problem. But it gets worse. iTunes has now disappeared from my list of installed programs so I can't uninstall anyway. Appalling problem. This update clearly didn't get proper testing before release.
In answer to your question about your song library, I seem to remember uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes a few years ago and the uninstall didn't remove the library then - I can't see why it would. Of course there have been a lot of updates since then, so it is definitely worth asking the question. Personally, I would be inclined to make a copy (if you have the space) of the iTunes folder just to be sure.
I certainly hope they get this fixed soon. I use iTunes mainly for podcasts on my iPod and I can't download anything right now.

Its the first time ive used iphoto, hence the vast number of photos i needed to import. I was importing from my phone to my macbook iphoto, my son caught the usb connection during the time when iphoto was deleting from the phone, after it had apparently imported all of the photos but none of them are on iphoto and only 195 are still on my phone.
The problem is not deleting them but finding them all?

If your phone is in recovery mode, then they are already gone.

You will not lose them and you will not be able to transfer them into iTunes. Your Kindle books are maintained in your Amazon account, not in iTunes. You manage all of your Kindle books with Amazon.com.
However, if you have never synced with iTunes before, you may need to make the iTunes library your syncing library. Have you synced with this computer before?

Thanks @ KiltedTim, but losing "only" any data is really not acceptable and, in this case, the phone had not been backed up, but thanks for taking the time. Also, yes, fungible means what I think it means. An iphone is a completely substitutible commodity, unlike my data, so instructions that inform me as to how to fix a phone I could replace for a small sum of money while failing to address the more important issue of the data are almost useless - they potentially save me the $99 it would cost me to replace the phone if I were so inclined to trust another apple product. Not worth the hour it took to find them or the 35 minutes on the phone to confirm my suspicions about the data.

Thanls Ernie. I found the solution. My problem was previous to 10.10.3. It looks like the installation of final cut and uninstallation of fcp delte a plugins that was needed for Aperture. I recover from time machine my plugins in Library/frameworks/plugin.manager.framework and now Aperture works ! Ouf....
