I have two 2nd generation iPods and iTunes will no longer let me delete songs (Delete in gray)?

I have two 2nd generation iPods and iTunes will no longer let me delete music from either one. If I select a song, "Delete" is gray in the menu and cannot be selected. What's happened? New iTunes not compatible?

In order to manually remove music from the iPod via iTunes, you need to have the Manually manage music and videos option checked from under each iPod's Summary tab.

Hello there! I have a 2nd generation Ipod and right now I cannot use a lot of app because of its old software. Is there a way to solve it?

Only by purchasing a newer model iPod.
To more easily find compatible apps for your 2G
iOSSearch - search the iTunes store for compatible apps.
    Vintapps 3.1.3 - paid app.
Apple Club - filter apps by iOS version.

    Error -1
Attempt to restore your iOS device two more times. If the issue is still unresolved, the device may need service.
The "device may need service" means a hardware problem. In that case make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

    I have a 2nd generation Ipod.
I have it connected to my computer and see (my name) ipod on my screen.
Everytime I try to add a new song to the Ipod, this message comes up and I am not sure what to do:
The Ipod, (my name) is synced with another ITunes library on A74F65. Do you want to erase this Ipod and sync with this ITunes Library?
An Ipod can be synced with only one ITunes library at a time.  Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this IPod with the contents of this ITunes library.
Then it asks me if I want to delete and sync.
I am not sure what to do for fear of erasing everything I have put on my Ipod.
I would appreciate if someone could help me out.

If I understand you correctly, you are trying to use iTunes to play the Music in your iPod but which is not in your itunes library. I don't think Apple design iTunes for use in your way. As to put and play music in iPod, the music has to be in iTunes first, so you play music in the iTunes music Library. the window with Ipod music is just to show you which music are already in the Ipod, in case you want to Manually Manage your huge music library.
Here is the iPod/iTunes manual from the Apple Support Site.

  • I have a 2nd generation iPod that only displays an image of the cord, and an arrow to connect to iTunes. I've done this and it says it needs to be restored. Tried that but I get an error: 1611.  Any suggestions?

I have a 2nd generation iPod that won't do anything but display the Apple logo for a brief second then an image of the cord suggesting it should be connected to iTunes. I tried to restore it via iTunes but I get an Error: 1611. It does nothing else.  I tried turning off using both buttons...nothing. Any suggestions?

Error 1611: This error may indicate a hardware issue with your device. Follow the steps in this article. Alsoattempt to restore while connected with a known-good 30-pin Dock Connector cable, computer, and network to isolate this issue to the device. The MAC address being missing or the IMEI being the default value (00 499901 064000 0) can also confirm a hardware issue. Out-of-date or incorrectly configured proxy or security software, such as FoxyProxy, can cause error 1611. To troubleshoot third-party security software, follow these steps.

  • I have a 2nd generation shuffle and want to use it for my grandson.  On connecting to iTunes it wants to download everything I have on iTunes automatically and I do not know how to get it to manual upload

I have a 2nd generation shuffle and want to use it for my grandson.  On connecting to my PC it asks the question ". do you want to delete everything on the shuffle and replace with that on your iTunes".  I do not want to do this I want to start again and manually add items.  How do I get it to do this please

A 2G Shuffle can only be synced with one iTunes library at a time. So if you are trying to connect and use the Shuffle with a new computer/iTunes library, you'll need tor restore it before you can begin syncing or manualy adding content to it from the new library.
So go ahead and restore the iPod and then configure it for manual management.  See this article for more details on configuring the shuffle for manual management.

  • I have a 2nd generation iPod....I have switch on the OFF position and it will periodically turn on (thus draining the battery) by itself.  How can I fix this?

I have a 2nd generation iPod shuffle.  Recently, after I turn switch to OFF position, it will turn on (green light flicks on) by itself periodically and obviously battery gets drained.  How can I fix this?

I don't know of a way to fix an issue with the switch, if it's a hardware issue.  You can try doing a Restore on the shuffle in iTunes, to see if there's some software glitch.
However, I often leave my shuffle with the power swtich in the ON position.  When you are not playing music, the shuffle goes into a "sleep" mode after about a minute.  You'll notice that you need to press the Play button twice to get it to play again; the first press wakes it up.  In my day-to-day experience, I don't notice any difference in battery life between the shuffle being OFF and ON (and not playing), even if I leave it ON overnight.  And keeping it ON avoids needing to constantly move the tiny swtich, and saves it from wear and tear.
So, you might try just keeping the power swtich in the ON position, and pausing playback to "turn it OFF."

I have a 2nd generation Ipod touch.  Lately the screen will not light up and also at times while typing it returns to the home screen (such as in facebook. Any suggestions?

Have you tried any of the usual 5 R's for troubleshooting.  See here for more information.
    http://www.apple.com/support/ipod/five_rs/
If none of those resolve the issue (including restoring the device back to factory defaults), the backlight issue is likely hardware related, meaning you'll need to have your iPod serviced either by Apple or a third party repair company.

  • 2nd gen iPod and iTunes 5

I have a 2nd generation iPod.  Currently I am running iTunes 3 and syncing with an Intel  iBook running OS 10.6 Snow Leopard.  Everything works great.
It appears I need iTunes 5 to allow my iBook to communicate with a brand new iPad 2 I just got.
If I update to iTunes 5, will it still recognize and sync with the old 2nd generation iPod?
Are there any particular precautions or "work arounds" that I need to employ?
For example is it possible to have two versions of iTunes in the same computer?  iTunes 5 to allow it to talk to the iPad and iTunes 3 to talk to the old iPod?

Very helpful.  Thank you so much.
The notes I was referring to are the footnotes in small faint legal type at the bottom of the page.  I may have been misinterpreting them:
Automatic downloads and downloading previous purchases require iOS 4.3.3 or later on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2; iOS 5 on iPhone 4 (CDMA model); or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.3.1 or later. Previous purchases may be unavailable if they are no longer in the iTunes Store, App Store, or iBookstore. Download iTunes 10.5 free.
iTunes Match requires iOS 5.0.1 on iPhone 3GS or later, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, or iPad 2, or a Mac or PC with iTunes 10.5.1. Limit 25,000 songs. iTunes purchases do not count against limit. Access to some services is limited to 10 devices.
Also, I did get an indication from a "genius" I spoke to at the local apple store that he didn't think the old iPod would work with the latest iTunes, but he hastened to add he wasn't sure about that.  I got the distinct feeling that he had never seen an iPod as old as mine - clearly it predates him.
