I have visited a genuis bench at Fountain gate however, they tell me I need to ring apple support which I will do on the next working day.

You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

There is currently no way to merge accounts. The best option is to pick one, and use it consistantly.

Neither of those Apps allow you to (easily) add iWork documents created or edited on the device to your online storage, you need to be using a webDAV server to be able to do that. In fact pretty much all you can add from the iOS device is photos and video without resorting to convoluted workarounds, intermediate apps or emailing finished documents to yourself. You can on the other hand view most of the content of dropbox/sugarsync through those apps, which in a lot of circumstances is useful, but without it working in both directions these apps are far from an ideal solution.

Yes, this may not be of too much interest to the OP, I was only trying to clarify the situation with iCloud.com/iWork for you.
However that being said, there may be areas of interest for Computer to Computer syncing, given the recent changes made to iCloud.com/iWork. I wouldn't suggest iCloud sharing for archived documents, but for perhaps up to a couple of dozen documents in progress, iCloud sharing is now quite viable. If there is any chance at all of these documents being accessed on an iOS device then iCloud would become a preferred option to dropbox or sugarsync.

Were you able to reset the account's password ? If not then how did you try to get it reset e.g. http://iforgot.apple.com (which would have sent it to the rescue email address if you have one on that account) ? You can also try contacting iTunes Support in your country to get it reset : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699
And no, accounts can't be merged nor content transferred between accounts.

Sorry; I've been away for a day or two so could not respond. I think the last post from ashlie covers your question. I don't use an iPhone so I know only basics about it. As I see that reply, you log in with the ID you dont want, then log out. Then log in with the second ID you do want and log out. That should leave you with the second ID as your ID and by never using the other one again the old ID will in effect go away.

This is causing problems with iMessages not syncing over my devices because the different email addresses cause messages to be sent to different devices so I miss messages. I have two apple accounts that I cannot get to merge. One is a hotmail address and the other a gmail address as primary addresses in the two accounts. I would like to merge them into one account. I cannot verify the addresses of either accounts because when I do it will say that the address already exists. Therefore I can't get them to merge.

Me.com and hotmail are under the same account., but when I log into me.com some of the accounts turn into the hotmail account. I do not use hotmail anymore and use gmail regularly.

If these are both used as Apple IDs, then they cannot be merged. If they are just two email accounts of which you only wish to use one, then you would need to transfer the data you want to save from one to the other. Since the data are just email you would need to look for a way to export it from one email address as a file compatible with what the other can import.

Content is forever tied to the Apple ID that bought it. Apple does not transfer content from one Apple ID to another. Apple does not merge Apple IDs. You will never be able to access your content bought with one Apple ID with a new Apple ID.

What do you mean by deleting the account? One can't delete an Apple ID/iTunes account. One just stops using it.
Since yo can only have five computer authorized for one iTunes account you might want to deauthorize the computer for that account
