I have Two mac, should I have two iphoto library?

I have two mac, mbp13" and imac white 24"
I am facing a big problem with TWO MACs.
I went to travel with my mbp13" one week before. I copy the whole iphoto library into mbp in order to sync it with my ipod. Also, I import all the photo into mbp iphoto library during the vacation. All the photo are well manage with event, tab, rating, faces, etc.
What should I do in order to put 'this event' with all managed data from mbp13" into the imac24" iphoto library? Is there any other ways to reach such goal?
I have never used two macs before, please give me some advise for the best use of them. thanks!

What do you mean by "Sync".
The general term means when two Libraries (A and B) are compared and files in Library A are copied to Library B, while files in Library B are also copied to Library A so that both Libraries are identical.
This is bi-directional copying and *you cannot do this with automatically with iPhoto*. No Syncing software is capable of parsing the iPhoto Library in this manner. One or both of your Libraries will be damaged if you try this.
You can have uni-directional copying - files in Library A are copied to Library B - this is essentially backing up. Obviously you can also copy from Library B to Library A.
The nearest you can get to syncing is to use iPhoto Library Manager to move files/Albums/Events plus assoicated metadata between Libraries. This process cannot be automated.

I have an old Mac book pro which had hundreds of photos in iphoto. recently bought a new mac book air. now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!

now my iphoto library on the old mac book is gone!!!!
How did you search for the iPhoto Library?
What do you mean by "is gone"?  Is the iPhoto Library missing from the Pictures folder?  Or does iPhoto launch and show and empty library, and you assume, that the library is missing?
Which version of iPhoto is installed on your old Mac?
Search with Find Any File for iPhoto Libraries -  download Find Any File here: The trial is free:
    http://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.htmlhttp://apps.tempel.org/FindAnyFile/index.php
You can search everywhere with FindAnyFile, where Spotlight will not search.
I learned this  from Old Toad , see his post here:
Re: My iPhoto Library disappeared...how do I get it back?
Download and run Find Any File to search for a file with "ThumbJPGSegment" in the file name. These are files common to all versions of  iPhoto libraries.
FAF can search areas that Spotlight can't like invisible folders, system folders and packages. If there's a library hiding somewhere on your hard drive FAF will find it.

  • Why do I have 3 iPhoto Library folders?

I have three iPhoto Library folders named iPhoto Library, iPhoto Library (original) and iPhoto Library (original) 2. Can I delete the two "original" folders and keep all current photos? Based upon the date, they appear to be old folders from previous upgrades and no longer useful - "original" is from 2010 and the "original 2" is from February 2012. I need more space on my hard drive - help!

Depress the option key, launch iPhoto and use the select library command to look at each library. Any that you as sure you do not want can be deleted

  • I have an iPhoto library with only Jpeg's in it. I just installed Aperture 3.5 and imported several RAW photos. Shouldn't I now have an Aperture library?

I have an iPhoto library with only Jpeg's in it. I just installed Aperture 3.5 and imported several RAW photos in Aperture. Shouldn't I now have an Aperture library?

Should I create an Aperture library and import all of my photos from iPhoto to the new Aperture library? Then delete my iPhoto library entirely?  Just trying to get my library structure correct from the get-go as I plan to shoot only in RAW.
That is not an easy question. There are still a few glitches with the unified library approach. For example, the new iWork applications will not yet show the Aperture library in the Media Browser, only the current iPhoto library. If you are using iWork with your photolibrary, keep it an iPhoto library.
And it is unclear, what will happen, when Aperture or iPhoto will be upgraded to newer versions. Right now you need the latest iPhoto version to be able to upgrade older iPhoto libraries, if you want to open them in Aperture. So probably you will need to upgrade iPhoto as well, if you keep your library an iPhoto library, when both Aperture and iPhoto will be upgraded to Aperture 4 and iPhoto 12.0 or similar. In the long run it will be safer to convert the library to an Aperture library, if you do not want to keep updating iPhoto, but that can wait.
If you want to convert the iPhoto library to an Aperture library, back up your iPhoto library.
Then create a new Aperture library (with File > Switch to Library > Other/New ) and then import your iPhoto library into Aperture using the command "File > Import > Library" and select your iPhoto library.
You will need plenty of space on the drive with the new library. Merging a library into another one will  temporarily a lot of working space and may take a long time - several hours for a large library, without visible progress.

  • Why do I have 2 iPhoto Library icons?

    Hello
    I have 2 unrelated issues. (I believe)
First, In my home folder...picutures folder, I have 2 iPhoto Library icons. one with a date modified 20/6/2010 size 45.98GB. the other date modified Today 44.65 GB. In the last few days I have been deleting some photos that were not so good, so I gather the smaller icon shows the iphoto I have been using. What should I do? I gather I do not need both.
Should I delete the older one by dragging to trash or move to a back up disc first
    Please advise
    Secondly
While in the process of cutting photos, I have come across sections of my photos where there are 2 of each photo. the original named xxx.jpg and the copy xxx2. I have been manually delting xxx2 ones but I am not really sure if this is the right way to go. There was a section where there were over a hundred duplicates. I am certain these were not here before and I have not connected my camera in weeks. Whenever I do connect my camera I choose the option 'do not import duplicates'. Any idea what is happening here?
    Thanks
    Jeff

You seem to have duplicated your iPhoto Library on or around June 20 last.
Open then both to compare the contents: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Yes, you can trash the duplicate once you're sure it's a duplicate.
Should I delete the older one by dragging to trash or move to a back up disc first
You need a back up no matter what.
For dealing with duplicates in iPhoto check out Duplicate Annihilator

  • Is it possible for two users on seperate Macs to edit the same iPhoto Library

    Hi,
I've recently been on an overseas trip with my partner, and now we have 5000 photos to sort through, tag, and add descriptions for.
Is it possible for us to access the same iPhoto library on each of our Macs to make it faster to sort through the photos? If so, how do I go about setting this up? We have a third mac, might it be better to move the iPhoto Library to that, make it act as server of sorts, and our other two macs as clients?

Yes it is possible, but there are a few caveats.
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
Only one of you can access the Library at a time. You can't both be working on the project at the same time.
iPhoto is not a multi-user app., it does not have the code to negotiate two users simultaneously writing to the database, and trying will cause db corruption. So only one user at a time, and back up, back up back up.
Quit iPhoto in both machines. Move the Library to the Users / Shared Folder
(You can also use an external HD set to ignore permissions, a Disk Image or even partition your Hard Disk.)
On each machine in turn: Double click on the Library to open it. (You may be asked to repair the Library Permissions.) From that point on, this will be the default library location. Both machines will have full access to the library, in fact, both machines will 'own' it.

  • I have my iphoto library on an external drive, but it filled up.  Can I have another library in another external drive and use them both?

I have old pictures in my external drive that I filled up.  I would like to make another iphoto library in a new external drive and have this one for new pictures.  Can I do that? And how will I be able to see my old pictures on my older external drive? My iphoto is 9.5.1.

Yes.  Another way to switch between libraries is with this menu in iPhoto:

  • Moved iPhoto 11 library to external drive and have a iPhoto Library file left on desktop

    Hello,
I have a blue file on my desktop labeled iPhoto Library, that appeared during the course of me moving my  iPhoto Library ( iPhoto 11) to an external hard drive to make room on the internal disk, my attempts to reopen iPhoto on the internal disk,  move selected photos from the iPhoto Library on the external drive over to the newly emptied iPhoto Library on my laptop.
The blue iPhoto Library file contains these items:
    AlbumData.xml
    AlbumData2.xml
    iPhoto.ipspot
Questions: does this blue file belong somewhere or can I trash it?
    This is what I did:
    1. I opened Pictures, dragged the iPhoto Library from there to the external drive.
    2. When I opened iPhoto on my MBP it said it needed a library to open with and the choices already in the box were:
    iPhoto Library(default)
    iPhoto Library
    3. I chose "iPhoto Library" because I thought "(default)" meant restoring the original library.
    4. iPhoto opened to the "get started with iPhoto" like a new install.
5.I moved (drag and drop ) some photos from the external drive back into the "empty" iPhoto Library. I tried to move a group of photos but I didn't know how to do it so ...
    6. I took the iPhoto Library from the trash and put it back into the "empty" iPhoto Library.
    7. I tried to delete all the photos except the ones I wanted to keep in the internal iPhoto Library. I couldn't do it so....
    8. I closed iPhoto, went back into Pictures and trashed the internal iPhoto Library again.
    9. Reopened iPhoto and it needed a library to open with and I think I clicked
    iPhoto Library (default)
    10. When I opened iPhoto this time, it was the "get started with iPhoto" but the original photo albums and labels listed but all empty.
That's what I remember so far.
    Hope you can help.

It appears you created a new library.  Launch iPhoto with the Option key held down and select "Choose Library".
Navigate to the library on the external hard drive and select it.  Once you're satisfied that it's the one you want you can delete that folder from your desktop.

  • Is there any way under the sun to have an iPhoto library on a network drive?

A "working," "live" managed library, that is - not a backup.
As far as I can tell:
    1. iPhoto library doesn't work on a typical NAS as the library can only be run on an OSX Extended format.
    2. Recommendation is clearly to have it run on a local drive.
    BUT -
Call me lazy, or simply one who cherishes comfort (heck, that's one of the main reasons I moved to Apple in the first place!), but I do all my work either on a MBA or a rMBP, and I love exploring every nook and cranny at home. I do *not* want to have to directly connect a cable and stay still for any period of time during which I'm using iPhoto (or Aperture, for that matter).
    So:
Can connecting an OSX Extended formatted drive to Time Capsule (through USB) potentially work? WIll it now be an issue that this disk will be regarded by TC as an extension of itself and now cannot be backed up?
Seriously: with inflating image libraries and laptop/mobile proliferarion, more and more people are going to be working this way - not to mention wanting to share the same library across several computers/devices/users.
Is there really no solution?!?!...(Although someone mentioned in another discussion that a similar problem is now "solved automatically" in Mavericks - anyone know anything?)

You might want to look at IDimager.com | Photo Supreme. It runs on a "referenced" catalog basis much like Media Pro 1 does  and can have it's source files on any volume including NAS servers.
There's a demo that you can try.  The customer support people gave me these links:

  • New iMac or new Mac Mini... and iPhoto Library separate drive?

I have a 2007 iMac Intel Core Duo 2.4Ghz (4 meg RAM) with a hard drive in need of repair, according to Disk Utility (and repeated by DriveGenius 3.)  The Repair option is not available.  I have had occasional difficulty with this particular Mac, and this is actually my second hard drive, and it is out of warranty.  I had already planned to replace this computer later this year.
In attempting to download and install Lion OS, the install failed, and the computer became essentially inoperable.  I was able to use Time Machine to get it back running, but cannot repair what is surely a damaged HD.  Apple Support came to the same conclusion.
I have become interested in a few goals:  (1) To purchase a Mac Mini along with an Apple Thunderbolt monitor (when available) in order to separate my CPU from my monitor.  (2) I want to separate my media files from a CPU hard drive for safety, for the very problem I am experiencing now.  (3) I want to make my iPhoto library and iMovie library available to my wife – perhaps on an external dedicated drive - for her newer iMac, to various iPhones and iPads, and to two Apple TV units.
We have a home network with an Airport Extreme, and several Ethernet outlets.  Both iMac’s currently use Western Digital external drives for Time Machine backups.  I have another external Seagate drove solely for my iMovie files.  I just purchased a Time Capsule 2TB (but have not yet opened) with the idea that this would be where the “shared” iPhoto library resides.
    My questions –
Would you recommend using a Mac Mini + monitor, or go with a new iMac (my current iMac is my third and the only one that has given me some problems.)  I do not have any specialized use of my computer beyond the common iLife applications.
I want my photos and videos to be easily available to my family on their Apple devices (I’m the only one with the significant family photo library) and I haven’t quite devised a plan to accomplish that.  Can you make suggestions?
Thanks for any assistance you can offer.

Currently the Library is on EHD 1 and you want to copy it to EHD2?
Connect them both to the iMac. Make sure EHD2 formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)  and drag the iPhoto Library from EHD 1 to EHD 2
To open either Library with iPhoto 11: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
It will update the Library to the new formats. Remember once you do this the older versions of iPhoto will no longer be able to read it.

  • Q: where should I store my iPhoto library?

    Hi,
What is the best place to store the iPhoto library?
I have the following hardware to choose from in my house:
    Macbook Pro 750 GB
TimeCapsule 2TB (for now not used with TimeMachine)
    Synology NAS 3TB
And I also have a "unlimited" storage area hosted by a Norwegian provider of Internet based backup services.
My current library is approximate 500GB and installed at the Macbook Pro. After some good advise in the support community,it now shares nicely with my wife's Macbook. Problem is that in the not so distant future, the library will fill up all the remaining capacity for storage on my Macbook Pro. Will anyone point me in the direction of how to deal with this? I tried copying the iPhoto library to my TimeCapsule. It did not work - all other "large"files I have tried (13GB) can be copied without problem to the TimeCapsule, but not the iPhoto library, here the transfer repeatedly practically stopped at 500MB++.
I realize my question might be slightly off-topic to the iPhoto forum, it has I believe a side toward TimeCapsule (but I did not receive a practical feedback in the TimeCapsule forum).
Also, perhaps the answer to my question is not to use iPhoto at all, but instead use some other Mac application? I have  not invested much in defining metadata, so a conversion to another photo application is not so hard as it perhaps could be otherwise.
PS: What can I do to delete a i-photo library? I tried to delete the (partial) copy of the iPhoto library on my TimeCapsule, but this did not work. I attempted the delete logged in as the same user as when I attempted the copy, but even so, I suspect that I do not have the necessary permissions. What do you think could be the problem and the solution?
    Best regards

As TimeCapsule is designed for TimeMachine usage - the disk within the TimeCapsule should be Mac Os Extended (journaled), right? Delvin I have browsed several threads and I have the impression that you advise against using TimeCapsule for any other storage than TimeMachine. Would this apply even if the time capsule were not used for time machine purposes? Why in such case? It is so tempting to try making (other) use of the large disk connected with SATA II to the wireless device.
I also understand that you advise against updating the iPhoto library via wireless connections (because drop-outs can damage the library). For the sake of good order, these are not citations, just what I think I remember, I am sorry if I have understood and remembered it wrong.
The advise then, is it to connect a correctly formatted USB disk to my TimeCapsule and use this for my iPhoto library? Is it really too risky to insert pictures to the library from my macbook pro/the sofa via wireless? It seems awkward to move myself and my macbook pro near an cable to do something as simple as emptying my digital camera.
    Best regards,

And how do I turn off FACES?

I copied the iPhoto library to an external hard drive, then imported it to the new iPhoto.  It turned my 2000 photos into 12,000!!
According to you youo did not do what I instructed - you said you imported the old library into th enew library which can easily take a 2000 photo library and turn it into 12,000 including two ro three versions of each photo pus all the face thumbnails
The correct procedure has NO importing involved
drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity from the old Mac to the pictures folder of the new Mac - launch iPhoto on the new mac
    That is it
