time machine: I get the following message: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/Clemens’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use - what to do? Where and how do I find that file and get rid of it?
I'm on Mountain Lion and have version 6.1 of AirPort utility so there is no button to "Disconnect All Users"and the only other option of "removing and re-selecting the drive via Time Machine Prefs" doesn't work either. So this will work.
Launch Airport Utility and select the TC "Edit" button, then select the Disks tab. Deselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". The TC will reboot then follow the same procedure and reselect "Enable File Sharing" and click "Update". After TC reboots again you'll be up and running. Not the neatest way to do it but saves having to unplug the TC which risks disk damage and the whole procedure takes less than a minute. The "Enable File Sharing" button seems to have replaced the "Disconnect All Users" button but with the slight disadvantage that it reboots the TC which takes up additional time. -
I recently bought a new Time Capsule and the following message has started to show:-

I'm receiving this error message about my Time Capsule:
"The backup disk image '/Volumes/Data/my name's iMAC.sparesebundle" is already in use. The time capsule is not backing up any files.1. Open the Sharing preference pane and check that the computer name hasn't changed without your knowledge. For example, if the name was "X's iMac," it might now be "X's iMac (2)". In that case, restore the original name. You may have to click the lock icon in the lower left corner of the preference pane to unlock the settings. Test. If there's no improvement, or if the name had not been changed, continue.
2. If you're backing up to a Time Capsule, or an AirDisk attached to a 2013 or later model AirPort Extreme base station, restart it in either of the following ways:
☞ Disconnect and reconnect the power adapter.
☞ Select the device in the AirPort Utility application and then select
Base Station ▹ Restart
from the menu bar.
If AirPort Utility notifies you of a firmware update, install it. -
The Time Machine is not completing thte backup to my Time Capsule. I am receiving a message which reads "The backup disk image "/Volumes/Data/Mac Jet's iMAC.sparsebundle" is already in use." I cannot locate the source of the problem or what steps need to be taken to get the Time Capsule operating.
Hi, see if it shows here...
In Finder's Menu, select Go menu>Go to Folder, and go to "/volumes". (no quotes)
Volumes is where an alias to your hard drive ("/" at boot) is placed at startup, and where all the "mount points" for auxiliary drives are created for you to access them. This folder is normally hidden from view.
Drives with an extra 1 on the end have a side-effect of mounting a drive with the same name as the system already think exists. Try trashing the duplicates with a 1 or 2 if there are no real files in them, and reboot.
If it does contain data...

time machine has been running smoothly for years- until now. i changed the name of the computer, and now i get the error message. any ideas? d
I have had more than 1 customer with this error recently. I believe the fix is to unplug the TIme Capsule (I was told you should leave it unplugged about 20 minutes, but can't tell you why that amount of time) then plug the Time Capsule back in and your problem should be solved.

I am getting this error when time machine tries to back up to a time capsule. "The backup disk image “/Volumes/JUDY ARCENEAUX's Time Capsu-1/JUDY ARCENEAUX’s MacBook Air.sparsebundle” is already in use." Same time capsule has worked in the past.
First, restart the computer and the Time Capsule. In most of the cases, this should solve the problem.

My Apple Time Capsule stopped backing up a few weeks ago and after upgrading to Mavericks on my IMac I keep getting the message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/karen’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.
I have no idea what to do and am new to having a Mac -
Also a friend had orginally set my wifi up to be called "Karen's wifi" and it has also stopped connecting to the wi fi also so am using ethernet connect.
Can someone please give me an idiot's step by step guide please so my back will work again?
Thank youLocate the Time Capsule
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule
Wait a few minutes, then try another backup
If you are having WiFi connection problems, you should start another separate post for that issue. -
I keep getting a message when trying to back up my main computer = 'The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data-1/CMN iMac.sparsebundle” could not be created (error 60).'
The error message changes sometimes to other numbers but it is not able to back anything up. I have deleted any previous back ups and rechosen the destination disk (Time Capsule). My other computers are doing the same thing periodically but this is the most important back up that I need.
Any ideas anyone?See #C9 in Time Machine expert Pondini's Time Machine---Troubleshooting

Hey, my new Time Machine worked a treat for the first couple of days, but now I get a "sparsebundle is already in use" message. Also, the original 153gb backup seems to have disappeared! Any clues with how I can deal with this?
Just reboot the whole network.. restart modem .. router/TC.. clients with 2min gap.
This is the most common problem reported here with Mountain Lion.. although you didn't fill in the profile. ML??

Apple made a dog's breakfast of it. -
What does that mean and how do I correct it so it will back up?
Restart your MacBook and your Time Capsule (or disconnect your Time Machine external drive). Finally, you will be able to make backups of your files again.
If you have got a Time Capsule, Apple released a firmware update that fixes this issue. Open AirPort Utility (in /Applications/Utilities) and follow the steps. See > http://pondini.org/TM/C12.html -
I am trying to back up but get this message:
The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Dwight’s iMac.sparsebundle” is already in use.The link above is a good resource to use if the simple fix does not help.
Make sure that no other Macs are backing up the Time Capsule at the time
Pull the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule
Count to ten
Plug the power cord back into the back of the Time Capsule -
Hi, I have backed up 2 IMACs and one Mac Book Pro but for some reason, the 3rd IMAC come up with this problem: The backup disk image “/Volumes/Data/Anthony’s iMac.sparsebundle” could not be accessed (error -1). Why? The computer system is up to date and I have had no issue with the other computers, just this one.
Many thanks
